April 28, 2009 — Berhanu Nega’s story is a frightening testament that in some parts of the world, people are still enmeshed in life-and-death struggles for freedom.
The Ethiopian government recently announced that Berhanu and other opposition leaders had been plotting a coup. Thirty-five opposition party members were arrested in Ethiopia, and a government official said if Berhanu ever returns, he will be jailed, too. It is not the first time Berhanu, a Bucknell economics professor, has been targeted by the government in his native country.
Berhanu was elected mayor of Ethiopia’s capital city, Addis Ababa, in 2005 but was arrested afterward along with more than 100 other opposition politicians and stood trial for treason. He and the others were freed in 2007 in a pardon deal. He left Ethiopia after the trial.
Berhanu’s crime? Leading protests in response to alleged election fraud. Demonstrations started peacefully, but led to turmoil that culminated in a slaughter by government soldiers that left 193 people dead and another 765 wounded. The Ethiopian government pinned the blame for the deaths on the opposition leaders, and 38 people, including Berhanu, were arrested and placed on trial, originally facing possible execution.
Berhanu offers heroic evidence that those who experience democracy in action will risk everything to spread freedom.Through its history, Ethiopia was mostly governed by monarchy or dictatorship. The African nation has been struggling to live up to its formal name of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
Berhanu’s efforts to encourage the growth of democracy in Africa deserve the full support of the American government. The United States just completed an historic election that led to a transformational shift in power. The triumph of American democracy provided that the results of the election were accepted without a hint of civil unrest. The United States provides the model for sustainable democracy. This country should also foster the growth of freedom around the globe, including in places such as Ethiopia.

I think Ginbot 7 and UDJ are doing a good job.
Weyanes are trying so hard to tear apart those organizations. The accusation of UDJ is for its association with Arena Tigray. The alliance of UDJ-Arena is a mortal combination for Arat Kilo gangs. Melese supporters and the Eritreans spearheaded this accusation. The Eritreans hate Arena Tigray for their own reason. On the other hand, Ginbot 7 is accused of for collaboration with Eritreans. This campaign is lead by all Weyanes and some Amhara nationalists, who are advocating unity blindly.
In my view, both parties are complementary to each other. If we are able to get a full support of Tigreans through Arena, no need of Eritean supports. Collaboration with Eritrea is also critical for today and tomorrow. I heard some Amhara nationalists saying “Eritrea will come back”. But I don’t see any ground work in evolution from them that help bring Eritrean people back. On the contrary, they are attacking the Eritrean leaders day in/out. They should have passed the judgment about Eritrean leaders to the Eritreans themselves. Eritrea is standing with us in this difficult time of ours. The Eritreans took imitative and bringing these two people start here… Don’t brush aside this initiative as a politics intrigue. It is real and will bring real change in the heart and minds of Eritreans and Ethiopians.

I hope that many Ethiopians would not buy this weyanne hoax of genbot7 plotting to overthrow their ethno-fascistic regime in Ethiopia. Meles Zenawi has cooked up this fictious coup story as a means of another distraction and cover up for cleansing his army of some illoyal elements. There are some signs of mutiny and unrest among the non-tigre members of the weyanne army which are worrying the ethno-fascists. Meles Zenawi has chosen genbot7 as his main escapegoat for the trouble and is conducting his mop up operation to bring the situation under his total control. The arrest of Birtukan and the accusation of genbot7 are all related weyanne tactics worked out by their western advisers to confuse Ethiopians and promote what they call moderates
or loyals in the so called opposition. We know that the ethno-fascists
led by Meles Zenawi have been committing atrocities and are likely to face justice for crimes against humanity. These atrocities are committed under the watchful eyes of the west who have turned blind eyes and deaf ears to them. The courts which operate under fascism can not be free and are used as legal weapons to terrorize citizens. Ruling by terrorizing is the hallmark of ethno-fascism and to this end Meles Zenawi has deployed hundreds of thousands of Tigrayans as spies in Addis Ababa and other major towns. The tremendous fear, repression, suspicion and terror reigning now in Ethiopia signal the highest stage of ethno-fascism. All the signs indicate that the collapse or fall of ethno-fascism is approaching and Ethiopians should be prepared to bring Meles Zenawi to justice. The burning issue of bringing the ethno-fascists to justice should not be the subject for any compromise or reconciliation in the future. Only justice can heal the damage and wounds the ethno-facsists have inflicted on Ethiopia and Ethiopians.

Meles and his Tigre thugs are realizing that they are at their last stretch of the occupation of Ethiopia. The international political situation has also began to favor true democracy, justice and respect to human rights. The era of Meles and Woyane deceit, murder to a degree of genocide of Oromos, Sidamas, Agnuaks etc is quickly coming to a close. So far Woyane was very comfortable with the pseudo opposition, the likes of Beyene Petros, Merera Gudina, Bulcha Demekissa, Bertukan and “Arena Tigray”. I would like to support Ginbot 7, the problem is that 96% of Ginbot`s top leadership totally dominated by single minority tribe (Amhara tribe). Dr. Berhanu’s and Ato Andargachew’s leadership is is at the limelight with foreign and major ethiopian media coverage. The motives and/or the cause effect relationships that triggered this charges and counter charges displayed in the media can be traced back to Dr. Berhanu’s interview with VOA in pat I to III, where the last one was a question answer interview of Ethiopians broadcasted into Ethiopia. While he dismissed the idea of peaceful struggle by the hardliners of AEUP, EPRP, etc. as unworkable and opted to go the route of the armed struggle, he neither commented nor endorsed the path UDJP and/or Medrek are takning in the form of sustaining and/replacing TLF with the coalition Medrek, with Gebru Asrat of Tigrai Harena as Chairman of the coalition of loyalist opposition parties and UDJP as would be teletafi parties.
While UDJP and loyalist oppositon parties and Medrek are under their control with limited political space alloted to them, Ginbot 7 is under the control fo EPLF regime. I suspect they do not want these factions under TPLF control have any alliance with the movement with an armed struggle, in which case they have to use the insurrection of the regime by unconstitutional means, in collaboration with the parties and/or the coalition who are maintaining the constitutional order.
Ato Andargachew Tisgue’s motives, who was previous TPLF official to overthrow the current regime through armed struggle is unclear especially when he had been involved in drafting the charter/constitution and signed on to it like Prof. Beyene Petros, Dr. Yacob Haile Mariam, etc., who are in the camp of the coalition. It is baffling to Ethiopians of the silent majority and bothersome for TPLF losing control of the loyalist opposition parties, UDJP and Medrek to EPLF controlled freedom fighters.
When two elephants fight it is the ground that suffers, while both of them do not carry the national agenda/goal for peace, freedom, territorial integrity, sovereignty and unity of Ethiopia (one country, one flag, and one language)

Dear all opposition parties:
Udj, Hibret, Kinijit, ginbot 7 EPPF, etc. those who have no doubt unity is the key with equal rights for every ethnic groups. If you play the ethnic card and divide your party or the people of Ethiopia, you are no different than those of TPLF and OLF, etc. Respect other parties for what they stand for despite some differences. The common goal you have is to protect Ethiopia out of tyranny of TPLF. The clock does not stop there, you have obligation to protect every ethnicities not just your own, unity, equal right, and so on. Your goal should not be for power but for democracy in Ethiopia. In this way you have to support every other opposition party. For example, Hailu Shawel group want peaceful struggle, while G-7 want arm struggle. This is fine. Even though they both don’t support the approch to democracy in Ethiopia, their ends is the same. So, do not be obstacle to one another for greed, power and hatred. Do not play TPLF’s tactics in that case you are no different from tPLF. Settle your disagreement in cordial, respectful manner. No party should have power over the other for the purpose of deceit, greed, ethnicity, etc. Your parties have the obligation to approach extreme parties such as OLF and ONLF to negotiate while you stand in your believe that Ethiopia does not need another ethnic war and hatred, Ethiopia needs development with respecting and recognizing, protecting the human rights and empowering all ethnic groups.
This I wish for Ethiopian opposition parties.

My obseravation is that Birahanu sounded , when he gave the interview, that his Ginbot 7 is involved in this coup d’etat and they were trying to surprise us with one day revolution toppling down EPRDF. the fact remains that Birhanu could not outsmart Meles…Cause Meles knows the nitty gritties of intellegence and security…Due to his engagement in gurella fight since at the age of 19. Birhanu seems to undermine the intellegence of the ethiopian security. I am convinced Ginbot 7 was plotting this. Partly , because Birhanu was not adamamnt as usaul in rejecting the allegation by the governement * I could easily observe that * and partly because he gave repeated interviews that he would support any struggle and means to throw the government including Arms struggle. Then, if his dream comes true, he will come to Ethiopia like an exiled king and lead us. There is no room , as far as i am concerned, to pay in blood in the current ethiopian context. You so called oppositions, we know how brave you are to sign such a harrasing petition to esacpe life imprisonement while you were emotionaly leading the public into fire. So, we are not fool making the same mistake of becoming a wood in the fire to serve your ego. Dr. Birhanu, if you are truely a freedome fighter and belive in arms struggle, move out from the beautiful citis of the USA and join the bush. I happen to study the tactics of Woyane. They fabricate and use the state machinery of the secret police, media, concentration camps and the judiciary to criminalize and legalize their acts. Who will come up with the truth if the false and deceit are labelled as a factual truth and legalized by a court of law. This is assissnation- Doctrine of Stalinism and Albanian Communism.
They repeat this until they end up into their death bed. So no wonder.
Running dogs like Ethiopiafirst and Aiga have requested the extradiction of Dr. Berhanu, the Obama of Ethiopia, who happen to moving en mass to thus strangulate the throat of Melese. Berhanu has been a night mare to Ethiopian enemies.
I wonder if the situation is ripe for such kind of movement. I guess so. I have been to Addis for the Easter and I am a live witness to testify the agony of the people. I have been there for 3 months, visited and talked to some who are languishing.

When the invaders came into Ethiopia they were broke and barefoot but had a lot of guns and bullets to loot and murder Ethiopians.Soon after the invaders moved into the city,they roamed around the city and murdered national heroes and looted national treasures;then,they moved into the neighboruhood and broke into homes and vandalized the lives of the family and focrced children into the streets and made them homeless and at gun point held on their lives.
In recent weeks,girls have missing form their homes and schools at a very alarming rate leaving parents and the country depriving of national trasures meant to be the future generation. The level of missing girls is so high,parents are frightened to death so that they formed neighbourhood and schools watch-eye so that they would safely guard their children.
The unity of communities and societies in general had been taken by the illegal regime as a threat to their existence so that the regime had to manufacture varietes of faslse accusations of the soiety plotting coup against the cruel regime.
Terror is the primary tool of the current invading forces to drag the national movement of millions of Ethiopians who have been suppresed and oppressed by the tplfwoyane invaders;now, the invading forces,out of a fear of losing power to Ethiopians have begun to acuse of millions of Ethiopians and their democratic leaders plotting a coup. This is absurd and weird.

My previous ananlysis was focusing on the armed struggle and its probable link to UDJP and/or Medrek, which are are under TPLF controll with limited political space. Whether one supports toppling of TPLF regime by coup de etat or armed struggle, the regime is going to label it as an insurrection of the constiutional order, which will also implicate UDJP and /or Medrek, which nevertheless carry ethnic agenada, rather than national agenda. Therefore, to call for support for a coup de etat by US gov’t and/or the armed struggle by implication does not serve the national interest of the silent majority of Ethiopians. It will only lead into a fight between two elephants: Ertitrean backed freedom fighters and the mighty armed of TPLF armed to its teeth by USA. The best alternative is to rally around the hard liners of AEUP, EPRP and UEDF which is half way in between AEUP and UDJP with regard to prconditions before election to moblize the the silent majority free of ethnic agenda to reverse the plan and activities by TPLF, UDJP and/or Medrek or Ginbot-7, to free Ethiopians by Ethiopians, through boycott of goods and services run by TPLF and TPLF enterprizes, and other strategies for peaceful resistence.
Let the regime label it as it does to implicate and arrest individuals, they can not justify how they came to usurp into power other than an insurrection of the constitutional order of the central government of Ethiopia and replace it with an ethnic dictatorship.

Addendum: Ethiomedia is a media outlet to a TPLF propaganda about meles zenawi to allow for fair and free election and does not seek relection. This propaganda diessemination is not backed by declalation in lieu of the 7-point preconditions for election. This propaganda comes after the formation of UDJP and the formation of Medrek comosed of UDJP, and loyalist opposotion parties with ethnic agenda. It has nothing to do with free and fair election for the silent majority. It only means TPLF will run unrestricted, and UDJP and/or Medrek with run will limited political space as a show case as usual only to maintain the stus quo, win or loose.
