Europe-Based Oromo Call for Protest Against Meles

Written on Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 at 5:26 am by ethioforum

Press Release: The Ethiopian government, led by the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), continues to intimidate opposition parties and the civil society whilst muzzling a mass media that, as a result, is neither free nor fair. Heavy-handed state responses to legitimate protests have left scores dead and many more injured – and their families have no recourse to adequate justice.

To bring these abuses to the attention of the European public and decision makers, the Oromos residing in Europe will hold a demonstration on Friday 22 May 2009 - beginning at the Schuman station at 10AM (10:00), and moving to the European Commission (Berlaymont Building), the European Parliament (Place Jean Rey), the UK Embassy and the final stop at the USA Embassy, where activists will stay until 1pm (13:00).

The demonstration will urge the European Union and advocates of justice around the world to take note of, and act against, the atrocities being committed against the Oromo people and other nationalities of Ethiopia.

Activists will also call on all nations and nationalities in Ethiopia to stand in unity on behalf of the country’s innocent and voiceless peoples, whose lives and livelihoods are being constrained by an unrepresentative and minority government.

Note: There will be media opportunities during the demonstration and activists with first-hand experience of the situation in Ethiopia will be available for comments.

It is a good initiative. But, the demonstration is named and is a call for Oromo’s not Ethiopians. I see a serious craving among the Oromos to stand out alone and separate from Ethiopians. The Oromos are still paying a big price just for being alone and isolated though I didn’t so far see the benefit out of this. It is a good example of how powerful and consuming is hatred and vengeance. Out of this motives, the Oromos have become good instruments of the Woyane regime, though the woyane is very cruel and abusive to their compatriots in Ethiopia. Woyane is very smart at playing such games, they know that the Oromos will not do anything as long as it permit them to cry out ‘neftegna’ now and then. Woyane also know that the Oromos (OLF) are waiting in vain for a time where the Amara’s and Tigray’s are against each other. Therefore, the Oromo diaspora and OLF are just counting time without learning, developing, and maturing. They effectively become a group of grieving, complaining, hatemongers, with a lust for vengeance. But they didn’t realise that neither of these feelings go with civilised and efficient politics. They just keep on counting days and years ……….how sad!

    2. Zega Says:

Right now the only thing we can do is to unite and to shout together for Ethiopian people. I am quite sure we will have time to discuss about our ethinic issues after the funeral of the woyannes.Ethiopians lets agree on this.First thing is first.Lets save Mother Ethiopia first and then we will sit and discuss on specific ethinic cases.Deal????

    3. tena Says:

I agree with abebe. I am wondering which flag will hold while they demonstrate. It must be rather the time to show a unified action unless their intention is to confuse foreign powers with a “country” name which doesn’t existe. They better to fight for Ethiopia and save the suffering of their brothers, sisters, mothers, and fathers. Anything short of that doesn’t take to anywhere.

If they continue like a separatist attitude, they would simply help prolong the woyane regime there by increasing the suffering of the people they say they represent. I am sure, the post-woyane era will be the opportunity to bring peace and prosperity to every individual under the Ethiopian territory.

    4. Asteway Says:

Humanity before Ethnicity!!! I am very much moved by this current motto that the Solidarity Movement for a New Ethiopia embraced as a unifying concept for Ethiopian to work together. When ever I am shouting for freedom, justice, and human rights in Ethiopia, I am representing every citizen residing in Ethiopia without considering their ethnic background. I think we need to create a forums that enable us to work together……I will repeat the SMNE’s motto here for my Oromo brothers and sisters so that they will do a critical reflection on their stand and come up with a workable solution….I love all and am advocating for all people who are suffering under Meles’s administration. ….

      EMF,
Is this supposed to be news that will demoralize dictatorship or embolden the ethnic mafia, woyane? The so called “activities”, who are good for nothing, are doing a big favor for woyane. Activist my foot!!

    7. Mehari Berhe Says:

The vast majority of Oromos prefer to live in harmony and peace within the democratic and free Ethiopia despite the separatist aspirations of some Oromo elites. The OLF has not succeeded in its separatist agenda because it has not been able to win the hearts and minds of the people the front claims to represent. That is why the TPLF was able to route out and defeat the OLF easily since the latter does not have broad support among the Oromos. The TPLF moved against the OLF after having used it to commit atrocities and damage its image among Ethiopians. The OLF should evaluate its position and join mainstream Ethiopian politics to play a role in creating democratic and free Ethiopia.

    8. onethiopia Says:

I ma a believe on one ethiopia so i am happy to come out and march with you but for freedom of for all ethiopia and ethiopian, as ethiopian man i have nothing but love for everyone, and i am with you, but in this time of moment we have to put everything we have together and get this leader out of our country, and then we will sort out our defferences.

      love

    9. Wakyo Says:

tribalists like you get mad when non-oromos use the past history to prove you WRONG. but why do you continue using the your distorted version of the past to falsely claim oromos are conquered?? the truth is there was never one united oromo entity to be colonized because all communities were ethnically mixed. even if there were wars, it were limue vs gojjam or jimma vs shoe or gondar vs tigray etc etc. there were NEVER wars between oromos and amharas or any whole ethnic groups.

anyway, oromo nationalists can’t keep using their version of past to keep us divided while trying to censor other versions of the past!!!
      it is a double standard!!

    10. Tazabi Says:

OLF must be smart and unit with rest of Ethiopians otherwise you can`t do no things for Ormo peoples. I think Abebes explanation is very fantastic, get advice from it

    11. aha! Says:

This rally for a protest has an ethnic flavor of a peaceful demonstration parralel to armed struggle of OLF. When one is struggling a common enemy to free Ethiopians from economic and political strangle hold andhuman right abuses by an ethnic dictator the call for the rally should not ethnic identity to it. The predominant concept in the minds of the activists should be Ethiopiawinet before Ethnicity.

There is no true multi party system based on national agenda, such as AEUP, EPRP, etc. rather than ethnic agenda to label the current regime as a minority government, unrepresentative alright because it is based on ethnic agenda with conglomerate of defunct teletafi parties labled as eprdf, and yet based on ethnicity rather than national agenda. It is therefore an ethnic dictorship, having a grip on the country with security and agagzi forces, and economic strangle hold of the country by TPLF and TPLF affiliated enterprizes. If that is the case why rally Ethiopians with ethnic initiative, rather than an initiative for saving Ethiopia from disintegration along ethnic lines first and foremost, by abandoning ethnic based federalism, and secessionist war and fight together to free Ethiopians from the scurge of ethnic dictatorship. There is no such thing as Oromo libration front liberating itself from itself in such interwoven society where the Amahara ethinc group may be represented as organic entity of roots and stem and the other ethnic groups as branches and leaves of an organic system.

Why do we need to accentuate on appartheid and colonial style of divide rule policy of the ethnic dictatorship of TPLF? If freedom prevails with for all Ethiopians with genuine peaceful struggle of the hardliners, there is no chance for a party with ethnic based agenda to govern Ethiopians.

    12. Gemta Says:

      Dear all,

Some people say that Berhanu and Andargachew are Shaabia puppets.

But what is wrong with that? As comarades in arms with Shaabia and fighting against the common enemy known as TPLF, Ginbot-7 is ready to do everything including what may surprise and shock you. What if you know now that Ginbot-7 is part of the CIA-agents for as long as we free horn africa free from the zionist Amhara-Tigre clicks and send them home to where they originally belong - to Israel.

Do you think you can stop the political Sunami coming from Ogadenia, Oromia and Gambela with bare hands and war of words? That is futile. time will tell. Go G-7 go finish the Tigre-Amhara clicks once and for all.

    13. TAZABE Says:

      ETHIOMEDIA.COM INFECTED WITH CENSORSHIP CULTURE

EMF NOW OFFICIALLY CENSORING ARTICLES AND BECOMING ANOTHER DICTATOR.

    14. Mad at you Says:

Why call it oromo? If they are not EThiopians to hell with their demonstration. Still playing the stupid ethnic card. They are not any better than Meles. Yak!!!!

    15. tulu Says:

It always amazes me how a majority separates for the minority. The Oromos are the majority in the making of Ethiopia and the OLF has to come up with a better solution for the whole country, Ethiopia, including the issues of oppression of the Oromo people and how it is going to solve if they come to power in a democratic way in coordination with other groups/movements. Forget separation. Let others separate, if that is the case may be. There is no Ethiopia without the majority. OLF has brought awareness on the Oromo issues and we are thankful for that and it has also let our non-oromo bothers and sisters be aware of how the Oromos have been kept under serfdom for too long. That is history now. We have to move forward with this day and age and let our kids grow in peaceful Ethiopia. To do that Weyane has to be removed in unison. The Oromos have to carry the same burden as the other people of Ethiopia. At the demonstrations we need to carry both flags. We have to be ready to learn from history. We should be doomed to repeat it. Non-oromos have to recognize that there is oromos concern we need to deal with in a civilized manor without name calling.

    16. Ethio Says:

What did OLF did for Oromos or Ethiopia? NOTHING, ZILCH! They collaborated with Weyane, when Weyane double crossed them, they left Ethiopia and in their name Oromos are being persecuted. They are not bringing any thing for the Oromos instead many Oromos are languishing in prison. Instead, OLF poisoned the minds of Oromos of ethnic hatred. There is nothing wrong with struggle for your rights, equality struggle, that is not it, they are spreading ethnic hatred, saying “Neftegna, Abyssinia, etc” this doesn’t help Oromos. Not once did the OLF participated in activites that included Ethiopia, thinking one day they will rule Oromo, what if Oromos want to live in peace with their brothers and sisters, are they going to force them? During the G20 summit, there was a confusion of flag ONLF and OLF and while Ethiopians were shouting stop the persecution of Oromos, Ogadens and the rest of Ethiopians, the OLF and ONLF were shouting fro their own ethnic-only slogan. Some Ethiopians are accepting this and look at the webiste of ONLF and OLF it is very ethnocentric.

    17. Truth~ Says:

Why are you so obsessed with OLF? There are other many Oromo organizations which are willing to work for unity. There is millions of Oromos still pro Unity. If that is the case why do you prefer putting all your eggs in one basket?

Weyane is an ethnically homogenous regime and can be easily defeated if there is an ethnic dimension for the opposition to fight for. We all are oppressed by TPLF and and that gives us a common purpose .

Don’t forget; OPDO plays an ethnic card to dismantle any Oromo organization, which works with “Amhara” and for “Unity.” TPLF is a big monster in the room, on which we all have to put an eye.

Blaming OLF is not a solution. If we let ourselves disorganized and wait till miracle helps us, OLF will be the next TPLF.

    20. Mehadi Sultan Says:

The OLF is a collection of some Oromol elites from a certain region and does not represent the diiverse Oromo communities in Ethiopia. Despite the language, the Ormos can not be considered as a homogeneous group as the OLF and others would like to project. There is a great deal of lesson to be drawn from the targic experience in Somalia. Somalia is a typical case of homogeneity interms of language and relgion. But it has failed to function as a viable political entity due mainly to clan rivalries in the Somali communities. The other source of useful lesson is Eritrea which is known to comprise 9 ethnic groups but not applyimg the divisive ethnic politics. All the indications are that Eritrea is not better off as a country and thousands of its youth are fleeing the country. All these negative developments show that integration or unty is by far better than disintegration or secession. The best and wise political decision for all Ethiopian opposition groups should be to drop the agenda of secession and work for a democratic and unified country.

    21. aha! Says:

Mahadi Sultan that is the line of thinking that should prevail among all Ethiopians, Ethiopiawinet before ethnicity endowed with individual freedom, which empowers them to elect a democratic party with national agenda, rather than ethnic based agenda to restore harmoney among ethnic groups of fedreated states. Then develop the country along ecological zones, cutting accross states. That is the kind of Ethiopia we need to envision by working together to reverse the current crises prevailing in Ethiopia, including the path UDJP and/or Medrek and Ginbot 7 are taking.

    22. Ageren Asbat Says:

      Hi all

What is the difference between these narrow minded group and TPLF.In my view They are the same. Those who love their country-Ethiopia should disassociate themselves from these selfish power hungry vultures. All they need is power power power.

    23. Daandii Says:

      Hey all,
We Oromos need to live in peace and harmony with all “Ethiopians”, as long as our freedom is restored. Please understand, this doesn’t mean we will abondon our liberation struggle. We have achieved a lot already through our relentless struggle to liberate our nation Oromia which was forcefully occupied by Minilik (Amharas), and now re-occupied by TPLF (Tigres). We would like to live in peace and dignity with others, but not by any means at the cost of surrendering our idenity, dignity and our right. Don’t expect us to bow to your “arenguade-qay-bicaa” flag please, it will NEVER happen. We (all Oromos I can say) don’t want it, period. Don’t fool your self please, this is not the feeling of OLFites any more. It is the feeling of all Oromos. It might take sometime, but for sure we will restore our country back, or who knows, we will get an opportunity to live in one country with others. That will happen only if we all can sit side by side, as equals, and discuss what we want and what you guys want and create a middle ground. We will never allow anyone impose his/her ambitions on us. For instance, as long as that flag of yours is restored on us, when we clearly hate it (simply because it is a symbol of oppresion for us), and the name Ethiopia imposed on us by force without a proper referendum (of Oromos and others, ALL should accept), and Addis Ababa remains Addis Ababa, Amharic imposed on us by force or mischief, we feel that we are still subjugated. And we will continue to struggle. Will keep moving. We have gone a long way already. Map of Oromia, which was unthinkable few years back is now a realty. So is qubee Afan Oromo (Oromo Alphabet). Many, many more.

Forget about us (Oromos); if you can, fight with Meles. If not, you are in fact pushing us to ally (at least temporarily) with this killing machine; the TPLF.

      Peace.

    24. Ethio Says:

      Mehadi,

      Very true!

    25. Ewnet Says:

Hey , leave them alone. Support or keep quite. They have the right to fight for Oromo and Ethiopîans on the way they believe would bring solution. You were also among those who protested when OLF formed AFD and called all arganiozations from all direction and interest. You guys are really selfish. OLF may come with better idea in the future too. But for now let they do it. Down with woyane regime ; Viva OLF.

    26. abebe Says:

      Dandii,

Shameless creature, thank Woyane for the map, for the qube, almost for everything you mentioned as a victory. OLF hasn’t moved an inch since its establishment. OLFites just sit back and disseminate their hate propaganda. So Dandii don’t make such half-baked claims and make yourself a laughing stock! as you always are!!!!!!!!

    29. Daandii Says:

      Abebe,

I am not an alien “creature” my buddy. I am a human being just like you. Why are you mad at me? Why do you run to insult me, by saying a “shameless creature”? You said, “OLF hasn’t moved an inch since its establishment”. I disagree. Qubee was invented by OLF. OLF was using qubee in the jungle and abroad for more than a decade before it was intoduced to Oromia in 1992. So was map of Oromia. Both were legalized when OLF became part of the then transitional government. When OLF started struggle, nothing was known about Oromo. Including the name “Oromo” itself. It all depends how you define success or “moving an inch”. I don’t want to equate the Oromo people with the failure and success of OLF. But I can tell you one thing for sure. The struggle of the Oromo people for justice is moving an inch forward every passing day. That is not a gift of TPLF, it is the result of relentless struggle of Oromo nationalist from all fronts. In the world we live in, nothing is for free. To achieve something, you have to fight for it. That is exactly what we Oromos are doing. So, I say leave us alone, and mind your own bussiness.

By the way, OLF and its supporters do not disseminate hate propaganda against any ethnic group, including Amharas and Tigres. In fact, it is to the contrary. OLF media (website, radio, etc) are continuously covering the struggle that all Ethiopians are making to overthrow the current brutal regime in Ethiopia, and many Oromos are working round the clock towards achieving a viable democratic and accountable government in Ethiopia. Just listen to VOL (Radio Voice of Oromo Liberation) Amharic program. Why do you oppose this? Should we abondon our own liberation program, which is to fight for our freedom from any form of oppression, just to make you guys happy? For what? Remember, we live our own lives, you live yours. Although we have a lot of things in common, we also have grave differences. The way forward for all of us is to tolerate each other and try to resolve the issues we may have in common in a civilized manner. Not by insulting, cursing, and trashing each other. That path of cursing and a blind “akaki zeraf”, I am afraid, will eventually alienate Oromos and others and potentially can lead to a disasteruous and painful consequences.

      Peace.

    30. aha! Says:

Ethio! Yadekone Seytan sayekes aylekim. You do not blame the OLF elites who saw the carrots but not the stick when they decided for armed struggle for the promise not fulfiled under article 39, which I believe includes the right to scession upto self determination, along side of ethnic federalism of divide and rule, policy in an apartheid /colonial style of governance.

While Eritrea got its independence from its previous coloniser, Ethiopia, Oromos and Ogaden did not from what they identified Ethiopia as previous colonizer. While TPLF pleaded the UN for self determination of Eritrea, it did not do the same for Oromo and Ogaden, eventhough both concepts are wrong and ill conceived, to say the least about ethnic fedralism and secessionism. TPLF is in a delima whether to govern a country divided by ethnic groups or to call for self determination of the two major ethnic groups without out loosing the major components of ethnic federalism, let alone making a split of split within each ethnic group or loosing the ethnic group by referendum by the popuplation in each ethnic group as they did with Eritrea, and if it gets acceptance from the United Nations. None of the two scenarios are workable and negotiable. If it works it leaves the Amhara and the remaining ethnic groups, except TPLF, intact as Ethiopians. But border disputes among major feudalistic states, TPLF, OLF, and ONLF will persist as it does with Eritrea, in terms of boder and ports and they will never become a democratic states as is tha case with Eritrea and TPLF rule in Tigrai now and later.

In first place, why the elites accept ethnic federalism with scessionism built into it, unless the elites in these groups are shortsighted succumbing to divisision of land by language instead of demading individual freedom to empower them to elect a party in office with a national agenda, than for ethnic and seccessionist agenda, for the past 18 years.

    31. abebe Says:

      Dandii,

Don’t twist my message and make far-fetched interpretations of my idea, though you have the right to misunderstand me. I am not against any form of liberation movement, or any fight against oppression and tyrany. That is for sure. That is what brought us to this forum.

However, I have serious concerns about the divisive and hateful tactics of OLF all along. You are denying this knowingly or otherwise. But I know how OLFites attitude is, how much hatred and grudge they bear against the so called ‘Neftegnas’, they have never bothered even to clarify what this word connotes, what its relevance is, how the ordinary citizen should understand it. But this word has been used as a code both by OLFitse and Woyane alike to identify some groups who are condemned to any form of inhuman treatment including murder. If you don’t know about this, then you have never been to Ethiopia for the past 20 years. The very sad thing is that these so called ‘Neftegnas’ have paid all forms of sacrifice struggling with the motto of ‘land to the tiller’ and fought to overthrow the monarchial government in 1970’s. They didn’t care to protect and stand for their so called ‘Neftegna king’ when he was alone and overthrown from the throne. They have never doubted for a second that the end of the monarchial regime will eventually bring this demented hatemongers-ethnicist groups.

Let’s also be frank that the demarcation of the map, the right to use your own language and use latin alphabet were offered to you by Woyane for its own evil interest. But, I am not against this. The word ‘Oromo’ is introduced during the Derg probably before that too. You have to be at least decent to adimt this.

Finally, I should remind you that borders are not drawn by liberaton fighters or tyrants in their office, borders are recognised and demarcated by people themselves. They will become permanent when they are made with the consent of every affected party. When you start putting dividing line between people, you must also give strong evidence on which belongs to whom ,sometimes you must refer history as far back as 1000 years to reach consensus. So when you talk about the map of Oromia, you are talking about the confinment of ten’s of ethnic groups adjoning the Oromo people who have a stake in this. Don’t make such childish allusions. I know I am a bit harsh, it is only to let you know that you are touching a very sensitive issue, that creates havoc on the lifes of millions of people and many generations to come. Watchout!!!
