ADDIS ABABA (AFP) — Opposition protesters staged a rare demonstration in the Ethiopian capital Thursday, demanding the release of an official jailed for life in January. Some 300 people massed outside the presidential palace and then marched towards Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s office in Addis Ababa in the first such protests since 2005, when disputed poll results sparked violence.
The group called for the release of Birtukan Midekssa, an opposition leader sentenced to life in prison after she reportedly denied ever expressing remorse to obtain a pardon in 2007 for treason and outrage against the constitution among other offences.
Birtukan, the head of the Unity for Democracy Justice (UDJ) party, had been detained with dozens of opposition figures and supporters following the 2005 elections. “Our aim is to publicise the illegality of her detention, and to demand her immediate release. We demand the restoration of her pardon,” Yacob Hailemariam, UDJ’s deputy chief, told AFP. Birtukan was only granted visiting rights by an Ethiopian court on Wednesday, but her release now depends on a government pardon board, which in turn will submit its decision to President Girme Wolde Giorgis.
“It was one big step in the whole process to have her family and lawyer allowed to visit the prison. We will resume our struggle to reach the next stage, which is to have her released,” party spokesman Hailu Araya told AFP.
The UDJ made its most spectacular electoral gains ever in the 2005 polls but cried foul over reported fraud, claiming it was robbed of victory by Meles’ ruling party. The United States, a staunch Ethiopian ally and the country’s top aid contributor, has expressed concern over the 36-year-old’s re-arrest and called for more political freedom in the Horn of Africa nation.
Ethiopia’s next general elections are to be held in June 2010. Meles, whose security forces were blamed for using excessive force four years ago, has vowed to prepare law enforcement agencies to avoid bloodshed in time for next year.

UDJ held a very successful demonstration
(Aigaforum 04/17/09):- Leaders, members and supporters of opposition party, Democracy and Justice Party (UDJ) held a successful demonstration on behalf of their convicted leader Birtukan Mideksa.
According to our reports around 2:50 am (local time) there were between 250 to 280 demonstrators chanting “free our leader, “tagay yemotal enji tegel ayferesm” (an activist will die but the struggle lives on), and free Birtukan and stop gender discrimination!
Dr Negasso former president of Ethiopia, Bulcha Demkessa and producers of Addis Neger private paper were some of the notables at the demonstration. While Dr Negasso attended the demonstration from beginning to end, Ato Bulcha was there only at the end of the demonstration for some 10-15 minutes.
The demonstrators were able to march from the president’s office to PM office without any disturbance. Demonstrators were carrying the Ethiopian flag as well as the usual old guard flag which the constitution does not recognize as a legal flag. People were wearing UDJ blue T-shirt chanting Ethiopia is an island of Christians!
Sources informed us Engineer Gizachew and Dr Hailu as well as Asrat Tase was able to present their complaints to PM Meles office. Dr Yacob was seen leaving half way into the demonstration!
.Although the family of Birtukan Mideksa is hoping the demonstration will yield some positive result some of the demonstrators were not that hopeful.
Sources told us many of the participants were happy that the Government allowed them to demonstrate which helped them to highlight their cause to the international audience; they were not that hopeful things will change for Birtukan. They think the demonstration has helped them to relieve the burden off their shoulder.

It’s very disappointing….if demonstration is started to be limited like this (only representatives of the people)…where are we going? I think this is a bad step for the future too…

It is not a demonstration, it was a petition for the release of their leader. This time not including all the political prisoners, not including the tens of thousands languishing in concentarion camps. Should they rather use high caliber international lawyer instead, to reverse the revoking of her pardon and her unlawful imprisonment, rather than a staged demonstration which took so long to get approval and looks nothing more than organized petition for the release of W/T Birtukan only.
She will be released soon at the time and choosing of TPLF after the arrest has served its purpose of diversion and raising the image of UDJP and the formation of Medrek has taken a foothold at least in the diaspora.

The ethnofascist group led genocideer Meles Zenawi is insulting the intellegence of the international community. Any opposition party demonstrates to reach the community at large. It is unconstutional to deny the citizens of Ethiopia their right to show solidarity to Birtukan Midekesa and the UJD. Ethiopians should demonstrate without permission from the self-appointed government officials. Ethiopins should demonstrate to depose Zenawi from office. Zenawi and co. can not continue mocking upon the internationa community , specially upon the AU. The elections next year can not take place unless the people of Ethiopia controle the security and military. Besides Zenawi and co. should stop harrassing the opposition. The opposition should get ample opportunity to disseminate it’s programme. Otherwise we have to walk to the office to oust Zenawi. This we can do and we are good at it!

In the the article above I read an exaggerated and propaganda statement by Addis Abeba (AFP) which part and parcel which part and parcel of deceptive, subversive and diverionary of UDJP politics. To my understanding, the major constituents of UDJP is Kestadamena, who claim to be heir apparent of Kinijit, when Kestadamena a small party with very few membership, and neverthelss a split from Kinijit, the larger constituents are with AEUP in the order of a million. After UDJP was formed and opened about 35 offices, it declared itself at least by its supporters as creadible and formidable alternative in the diaspora website. Alternative to what, I do not know. was that a propaganda/ deception or what? Now a staged, well orchastrated petition like demonstation with 250 people with a bagde/ticket = a signature = ID. Is that the result of their requisition by the loyalist opposition leaders for a political space? For all what is evident, political space is qualitative event. You either have it or you do not in order to march in peaceful demonstration.

It is so incomprehensible that the UDJ would let the regime patronize their own party and their followers by compromising for something lesser than the cause that thousands have sacrificed their lives for i.e the right to demonstrate and freedom of expression. This is a brazen window dressing and political expediency in its entirity, in which the regime in power would only politically cash in, with no political kickback to UDJ. The political gains from such pandering for the UDJ would actually be zero, nothing, zilch. Neither the UDJ nor the downtrodden people of Ethiopia would profit from such shenanigans and horse-tradings. This so called demonstration held with such ignominious concessions on the part of UDJ, on the basic, immutable tenets of freedom of expression, through limiting the number of participants, is so spurious in that it only legitimizes the absolute and undisputed power that the regime has on UDJ and other political parties in the country.
If there would really be anything that such fawning and tail-wiggling by the UDJ would show, it is that the basic underpinnings of the party are so flimsy, the leaders are diffident and the party is malleable in that the regime could mould it in any shape of its whim.
It really doesn’t rquire to be an expert in political science to surmise that the regime in power will not be forced to release Birtukan by a two hundred fifty people demonstration. If the regime is going to release Birtukan, it would only be through the persistent arm- twisting by the international community, not by a two hundred fifty selected loyal demonstrators from the UDJ. What the UDJ did is only that it confided and admitted to its own adversary that it is spineless and lacks resolute. ጎበዝ በውያኔ እስር ቤት ታጉሮ ያለው ወገናችን እኮ ከ350,000 በላይ ይሆናል የሚል ግምት አለ :: ታዲያ እናንተ ብርቱኳን እና ቴዲ ይፈቱ እያላችሁ ሰላማዊ ሰልፍ ስትወጡ አታፍሩንም ? ወያኔ ገና መዲናዋን ሲቆጣጠር ጀምሮ የተዘጋባቸው ወገኖችስ ማን አላቸው ? በተለይ የዲያስፖራው ፖለቲካ በችግር የተሞላ ከመሆኑም በላይ ሚዛናዊነት ይጎድለዋል :: በእንደዚህ አይነት ትግል ለውጥ የሚናመጣ ይመስላችኋል ? ተማሪዎች ያለምንም ምክንያት ከትምህርት ገበታቸው እየተለቀሙ የደረሱበት ሲጠፋ ዝም ያልነው ከቴድ አፍሮ በምን ተለይቶ ነው ? ተቃዋሚ ተብዬዎቹ ፓርቲዎች ይህንን እንኳ ሊያስታውሱን አለመፈለጋቸው ሩጫው ለስልጣን ብቻ መሆኑን በግልጽ ያሳየናል :: የተሸፋፈነ አጀንዳ አንግበህ እንደገና ለቀጣዮቹ አስርተ አመታት ግራ ልታጋብን ከሆነ አላማህ ያንተ ነጻ አውጪነት ቢቀርብን ይሻላል :: የወያኔን ጉድለት ብቻ ሊያሳየን ለሚፈልግ አካል መልሳችን ” የተፈጠረውን ችግር የሚያብራራልን ሳይሆን የምንፈልገው የመፍትሄ ሃሳብ ያለውን ወገን ነው ” የሚል ስለሆነ ፓርቲዎቹ ወደመድረኩ ከመውጣታቸው በፊት ቢያስቡበት መልካም ነው :: የወያኔ እጅ ጠንክሮበት እንጂ ህዝባችን ዛሬ ከምንጊዜውም በላይ ስለፍትህና ዲሞክራሲ አስፈላጊነት ከመሪዎቹ የበለጠ ጠንቅቆ ተረድቶታል ::

Which party would fill the power vaccum again? Are we ready? The opposition should prepare to form a government in exile. Zenawi and co. take power. Zenawi and co. are traitors. The Weyanes landlocked Ethiopia and have given large tract of ethiopian land to Sudan. Meles and co. should be simply ousted.
Teddy Afro is impriosned, Birtukan is incacerated and there are many others in prison. We are being distracted by Zenawi and co from focusin on the main issues concerning the future of our country. Our people should get the opportunity to elect their own leaders.
We are not opposing Zenawi and co becuase they happen to be eritreans or tigreans. We are opposing them because they are weakening Ethiopia by giving away her sovereign territories and have landlocking it. We do not see any sign of remorse from the Zenawi camp. We do not feel any preparation that they are going to correct their positions. They have created or are in the process of creating nine small nikker states(”negen kleine negerlein as the Germans jock over negros so is Ethiopia now the joke of Sudan and Egypt!).
Ethiopians should destroy the traitor Zenawi and co. The Opposition should be more vigilant and be ready to pay the necessary price for the sovereignity and unity of Ethiopia. The amara people should lead. The Oromos, the Gurage, the sidama would follow. The situation is very serious. We have to be more active!

Mesfin! UDJP has no agenda for a genuine peaceful struggle since inception. All it has accomplished to facilitate the formation of Medrek, a coalition of loyalist opposition parties of ethnic-based lame duck parliamentarians, with Gebru Asrat of Tigrai Harena as Chairman of the coalitiion, where eventually UDJP and the loyalist oppostion parties to serve as teletafi parties for Tigrai Harena. This the political model they have themselves boxed in. They are only vested by TPLF with limited, orchastrated political space. Suprizingly enough they are being surrounded by elites in the diaspora whose self interest is ahead of the national interest, and have lost sight of the plight of the silent majority of Ethiopians at home and disintegration of what we know as Ethiopia.
