EMF (01 March 2009) Reliable sources in Addis Ababa have informed EMF this week that all pro-democracy websites and blogs suddenly made access to internet users.
The websites had been unblocked shortly after the US state department released its 2008 Human Rights Reports, condemning the regime’s blocking Web sites, including the sites of the OLF, ONLF, Ginbot 7, and several news blogs and sites run by opposition Diaspora groups, such as the Ethiopian Review, CyberEthiopia.com, Quatero Amharic Magazine and the Ethiopian Media Forum.
Media watchdog, Reporters without Borders complained several times that the government was censoring sites deemed critical of the government. The New York based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) stated that its servers were inaccessible to users, and that emails were not coming through to CPJ.
The Meles Zenawi regime was denying being involved in blocking the sites.
Reliable source from the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC), the state-run monopoly telecom and Internet provider, told EMF that the Zenawi’s administration is using the Chinese expertises to block the sites and jam opposition shortwave Radios.
“By doing so the regime is spending the country’s hard earned, multi-million, foreign currency which is supposed to be used for the development purposes.” The source said.
Ethiopia, China and Zimbabwe are the three most named countries in the world which experience blocking internet access to sites.

It is good news. However, don’t expect good from Woyanne. Paradoxically, the government has been expanding broadband network all over the country. At the same time they were blocking access and it is interrupted whenever Woyanne wants it. They have a system to spy on who is making use of some interesting sites and blogs, who is communicating with whom, etc. The current action of unblocking will also have a hidden purpose of tracking people, their interests, and their connections. Probably the Ginbot 7 movement is instilling fear and paranioa among woyane leaders.

Meles Zenawi, as most dictators at this stage would be, is paranoid. He is worried about blocing them, and he worries about unblocking them. In a few days or weeks he will block them again. He is almost insane at this stage. This is also evidenced by how he throws every opposition to jail. The raping and the genocide of Ogaden is another sign that this man is out of his mind. The sad thing is that those around him do not have the guts to tell him. This happened with Mengistu. Now history is repeating itself.

The chinese thechnician (who are engaged on blocking and distracting cyber media) must have done the greatest mistake. We have clear evidence that the Ethiopian government is assisted by chinese IT experts to do this dirty work. My assumption is before even finishing this message they will shut it dawn again!!! Meles might have been spooked by whats going on in Sudan. Do you remember the guy who was dancing with Meles at the Ethiopian millennium hall? Do you remember the fellow that Meles Zenawi sold part of Ethiopia to, so he can seek refuge when trouble is knocking at his door? They call him Omar Hussan al-Bashir_the butcher of Darfur. His days of free wheeling murder and mayhem of innocent Sudanese citizens are over. An arrest warrant has been issued for crimes against humanity in Darfur.
There is a lesson to be learned from this wonderful outcome. Anyone who kills, tortures, imprison..etc innocent citizens as an excuse for the bogus rule of law will be punished sooner or later. Who is to say Meles Zenawi will not face the music next? I will bet that Meles is not getting a good nights sleep at this moment. In fact, i picture him waking up a hundred times during the night,sweating profusely with the image of the boogy man running after him.
The New York times said “there are whispers in the dusty Sudanese Capital,Khartoum, that other senior Sudanese leaders are thinking about pushing Mr. Bashir out of office if the arrest warrant is issued.” Same thing awaits Meles. When the long arm of the International Criminal Court stretches and grabs Meles by the hand, everything around him will fall apart like a house of cards. His associates will testify against him to save their own necks. Every dirty laundry will be erred in public exposing the skeleton in the closet of Woyanes killing machine. I am sending a sincere R.I.P in advance to Meles Zenawi. I know a dead man walking when i see one.

Meles Zenawi is not only using the Chinese know how and technology, but also American and British supplied one to spy and block all opposition web sites. His intelligence and security apparatus are dependent mostly on these two western countries. At the moment he feels secure because many of the so called opposition groups are preparing to take part in his fraudulent elections to legitimize his continued ethnic dictatorship in the country. The UDJP is going to be part of this sham process and now Ethiopians have come to differentiate the true opposition from the fake ones. It is sickening to know that the UDJP leaders like Dr. Yacob and ato Gizachew have in person applied to Meles Zenawi for pardon. Unlocking of websites for real that he calls dangerous to his version of “democracy” would be another fun of these week. As someone commented above, the purpose of unblocking is for:
1) to mislead some foreign critics that everything under this regime is going well, including free press bla bla
2) to track and harvest some useful information about people’s political orientation and to closely look at those people who may have much links to groups that are labeled by the regime as dangerous to himself
3) to divert some core issues such as the imprisonment of Birtukan, the right of opposition parties to effectively organize and assemble to lead a credible political alternative.
Those attempts (1 to 3) would be short lived, means the locking process would restart and things would be business as usual.
Till that, there are some of us who tend to make fun of ourselves.

Is blocking diaspora websites so bad? I think they should remain blocked until the Diaspora really know and digests scientific methods of socia studies. For the most part, they are wrong, biased and prejudiced. They couldn’t accurately study the government either to defeat it or persuade it. Science is is lacking! Take for example, the maliciouis false and the devil’s advocate articles of prof.Almariam. Take for example, the articles of Obang Metho, a man who advocates for the ethnic cleansing of the Nuer and for their deportation to the Ethio-Sudan Border. The genuine opposition should declare and wage an all out struggle or war against the regime of Meles Zenawi. The economic boycott of the business empires of the TPLF and its affliates is one of the most important tools to use in the struggle. Besides, Ethiopians in the country and abroad should apply rigorous isolation of the known members and supporters of the TPLF in the communities they live.The genuine opposition forces which are advocating and have chosen all the means of the struggle, including the use of force should be in the forefront to call, coordinateand lead the boycots. The seriousness of any opposition group can only be measured by what it practically does ( like calling and leading boycots) to harm and undermine the economic and political power of the TPLF.

Why Woyane’s sudden change of blocking the Websites? There is nothing the criminal vagabonds will do because of favoring democracy or because of good intention. The only reasons they unblocked the sites might be because of one of the following three things.
1.Their masters have told them enough is enough and they are greatly ashamed of them. Hence if they do not follow what they are told there is no more money coming and it is gone to be doomsday for Woyane.
2. This is a tactical give away which they think will benefit them politically at the end by distracting the true children of Ethiopians from the struggle, even if it means for a short time of period.
3. Technical glitch or problem that unexpectedly opened the door. I bet the responsible party for this mistake will not be allowed to see a day when they are found.
It is only time that will tell which one of the above is that forced the criminals to have a change of heart in unbolcking the websites.
We real Ethiopians shoud remain vigilant and should not be distracted by what woyane is doing suddendly. We need to continue to put our pressure on it by any means possible, until it is chased out from power and the criminals, Meles and his crews are brought to justice. That will be the day when we will be able to talk about democracy and a united Ethiopia. Until then we should not expect any good from the trash woyane that need to be place as a grbabage in to the trash bin of history forever.

Ginbot 7 is the name simplistic mind of Dr.Berhanu coined for a democracy movement. A name of a political movement should be thematic indicating the goal of the struggle, the process of social mobilization is going to achieve. For example showing the balanced scale of justice as a goal of the struggle is right. But that achievement of justice is in a attaining a democracy and freedom of expression. Therefore, these three achievements of democracy, freedom of the press and justice are the goals of the struggle wrongly labelled Ginbot 7, which is only a day of a tragic incident where lives were lost by police excess use of force. It is a day worth remembering by all Ethiopians as innocent lives were lost. Ginbot 7 should change its name to the social themes it’s trying to achive, to Movement for Democracy and Justice. Otherwise, the name Ginbot 7 is vindictive, hateful, petty-minded and narrows down the broad theme of fighting for democracy, justice and freedom of the press to one incident, out of hundreds.

I never understood why Ethiomedia, AbugidaInfo, ETN and Addis Dimts are blocked in the first place since they were advancing the cause of the moderates with out an agenda for peaceful struggle in the form of boycott for example. Do you think for one moment those website in support of peaceful struggle will be allowed in Ethiopia. The regime does not care if these websites shout on top of their their lungs about the release of W/t Birtukan Mideksa. They will release her when they at the time of their choosing, but for now they want to keep you busy with these issue of her arrest, the visibility of UDJP and newly formed coalition take a foothold in the diaspora.
As lemlem said the diaspora should align itself with the genuine peace struggle and go full steam ahead with the boycott of on product and services of TPLF and TPLF affiliated enterprizes rather to twist the arms of EU to sanction the $250 million dollars of Aid to Ethiopia, which beyond your control.

We are bickering on issues that are irrelevant as far as Woyane is concerned. This rogue group called Woyane has been a non-Ethiopian entity since its inception and it say so in a clear language. These so called ‘pro-democracy movements’ in Ethiopia, a phrase taken from Western papers that described chinese opposition are in no way demcrats. They do not deserve to be called democrats. We can learn from the reasons that fractured KINJIT, and also from how they treat criticisms against their organizations and member individuals. A blink of an eye is a good cause for a month long essays of character assasinations on radios and web pages. If they were in power, opposition freedom of expression and peaceful demonstrations would be tied to destroying the unity of Ethiopia and ethnicization of Ethiopia. It wouldn’t matter that the accused would protest the allegations do not describe his activities.
Other than changes in land policy and klilization, human and democratic rights will continue to be violated when the opposition comes to power. They will be sponsored by the West; and these powers require their satellite governments to be effective, which means oppress, oppress and oppress the people to the end; especially in Ethiopia, where they have established a tradition of oppressive rules via Haile Sellasie and PM Meles. The recent letter written by Ginbot 7 to congratulate President Obama on his election victory begs to work for American interest in Ethiopia.

I am glad finally the “prodemocracy website blog opened”, however we still be ineffectual deliverying and communicating logically the messages since our self declared opposition political parties infested with enternal tribal division, and totally dominated by single tribe (Amhara tribe).
The opposition should be based on inclusivity of all Ethiopians, not only Amharas. Remember, Amhara does not mean Ethiopia, amhara is just another minority among many other minorities in ethiopia. Thus if we are going to bring lasting peace and Democracy then we should have logical rational opposition politics that will appeal and sway the entire country as one nation and one heart and common interest.

The peaceful struggle for peace, freedom, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ethiopia by the hard liners is at a cross road in 2009, with recently added gimmick of pro-democracy websites unblocked. It is an attempt to hijack and mask the the genuine peaceful struggle by the likes of TPLF itself and ew coalition Medrek, where UDJP itself as the originator will be serving as loyalist opposition to Tigrai Harena, the otherside of the same coin with TPLF. These coalition has no strategies to achieve the above goals, they are just a conglomerate of like minded politicians to maintain the status quo and their mere supporters are in the diaspora, not in Ethiopia. Nevertheless they attain seats by any means to stay in the parliament as lame duck parliamentarians.
The diaspora need to come together leaving aside all political frictions during dergue era, ethnic-based politics-looking for Ethiopiawinet before ethnicity, because you are indebted to Ethiopian tax payers, and adopt the strategies followed by the hardliners to achieve the above mentioned goals, having scrutinized the stands of the politicians in the coalition. The political model UDJP is that of sustaining TPLF and/or replacing TPLF with the likes of Seye Abraha and Gebru Asrat of Tgrai Harena as stipulated in the past. That coalition has been formed as Medrek in the past few weeks. They have met with US envoy for the horn of Africa and have conveyed their message in one voice by asking the US government to put pressure on the current regime to give them more political space as if political space is aquantitave event, instead of qualitative event. Just compare their demand to US Envoy to that of AEUP’s demand of 7-point conditions to be met before election to the US official.

dont even try it. Even if you have a PC with dial up access, it takes atleast 30 minutes to open the yahoo website or any mail portal. This did not count howmany times you are disconnected. If you are in internet cafe with 10 people working at the same, just multiply that time. So in otherwords, it is impossible for ethiopians to read the sophisticated websites in diaspora. So it doesnt matter whether they block it or not. It is better you send e-mails with news to your friends in ethiopia. Only people who work in embassies or int. org. have easier access since all of them have broad band.

From the time since tplfwoyane robbers arrived in Ethiopia,they had been holding guns on millions of Ethiopians and had been continuing to vandalise the resources of the country and had been building wealth both inside Ethiopia and outside Ethiopia leading them to becoming the richest mafia crimefamily in the history of robbery both in mother Ethiopia and the Earth.

It does not matter whether the prodemocracy websites blocked or unblocked, since we do not have no rational fuctional opposition political party functionally and rationally to convey the message.
All these self declared illogical opposition political parties residing in washington dc, they have no appealing inclusive political platform message since they are definable by mono tribal drama and their leadership totally dominated by Single tribe (Amhara tribe only). Let us not forget that Amharas are minority, thus for the minority to totally dominate the entire spectrum of the opposition front and leadership shows the irrationality and weakness within.
