Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) By Jason McLure– At least 45 people died in clashes between Ethiopia’s army and the separatist Ogaden National Liberation Front in the east of the country, government and rebel spokesmen said.
The ONLF said its ethnic Somali fighters killed 140 Ethiopian soldiers and allied militia members in battles over the past five days near the towns of Fik and Degehebur, according to an e-mailed statement from the group. In addition, 29 ONLF members died in the fighting, it said.
“The area around Degehebur is now completely in the hands of the ONLF, as is the area around the city of Fik,” it said.
Ethnic Somali rebels from the ONLF are seeking autonomy for Ethiopia’s Somali region, an arid tract of land twice the size of England, which is also known as the Ogaden. In June, New York-based Human Rights Watch accused the Ethiopian government of burning villages, executing civilians and raping women in an effort to quell the ONLF’s insurgency. Ethiopia denied the allegations.
Ethiopia’s government disputed the ONLF’s version of the latest fighting.
“This is completely wrong,” Ermias Legesse, Ethiopia’s state minister for communications, said in a phone interview today from Addis Ababa, the capital. “The regional peoples fought with the ONLF and they killed more than 45 ONLF soldiers.”
Legesse said three or four innocent people died in the fighting. He said he couldn’t respond to an ONLF claim that Ethiopian attack helicopters have been active in the region.
Opposition
Ethiopia claimed the Ogaden region in the late 19th century through a series of agreements with Italy and the U.K., which colonized much of modern-day Somalia. Ethnic Somalis from the Ogaden clan have opposed Ethiopian rule, and fighting in the region surged after the ONLF killed 73 Chinese and Ethiopian workers at an oil exploration site in the region in April 2007.
Ethiopia accuses neighboring Eritrea of backing the ONLF and has in turn backed Somali militias from rival clans to fight the rebel group.
Ethiopia has banned journalists from traveling independently in the region and rejected a United Nations call for an independent assessment of human rights atrocities.

The ONLF is on the ground in Ethiopia fighting but Genbot 7 is in the west talking. We do not expect the former servants of the TPLF, ato Andargachew Tsige and Dr. Berhanu Nega to be serious and determined to wage a decisive struggle against Meles Zenawi. They have sabotaged and undermined the struggle that was about to oust Meles Zenawi from power. Similarly, persons like Dr. Yacob Hailemariam and Ato Temesgen Zewdie can not be expected to conduct any kind of anti-TPLF struggle as they are very loyal to the regime of Meles Zenawi and would want to cooperate with it. These are soft pro-weyanne guys who should be excluded from any genuine opposition. There is no difference in reality between ato Lidetu Ayalew and ato Temesgen Zewdie.

Stranded at the Addis Ababa Airport for the second time in less than five months gave me time to think about Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia.
Having been around Addis City for two nights and driven across on sometimes very rough terrain and seen massive constructions going on, I suddenly realised that no matter how his unflattering human rights records may be, the man has done well for Ethiopia.
In the years Zenawi has been in power, he has single-mindedly focused on reconstructing the once pathetic infrastructure. The Addis Airport that was once the size of Kisumu Airport is now a spacious ultramodern international hub for the Horn of Africa. The streets of Addis Ababa that once resembled the dark alleys of New York’s ghettoes are now a glittering spectacle from its skylines.
Now Zenawi’s government has turned its attention to facilities and transport infrastructure. New high class hotels are springing up on a regular basis and at an amazingly faster rate. The days when the choice was between the overpriced and overrated Sheraton and the Hilton hotels are long gone.
More modern, classy and cheaper hotels have filled the void. The latest facility to don the Addis Ababa metropolitan scene has been the recent opening of the Millennium Dome, a huge leisure complex that was constructed to mark Ethiopia’s own Millennium that was celebrated seven years after the international Millennium festival.
The roads reconstruction, undertaken by multiple Chinese construction companies is slowly transforming Addis Ababa into a modern city that will soon only be compared to Johannesburg and Cairo on the continent.
Talking to several Ethiopian taxi drivers in Addis Ababa, one got the impression that Zenawi was becoming more popular with ordinary Ethiopians with each passing day. Their main reason for liking the man is that unlike past leaders such as Haile Selassie and Mengitsu Haile Mariam, Zenawi is short on majesty and rhetoric and long on pragmatism. They say he is a realist who knows what Ethiopians want and goes ahead to give it to them.
Having watched Zenawi chair the African Union’s African Peer Review Heads of State Summits, I got the impression that he is an avid and meticulous reader and stickler for details. The way he ravaged country reports from Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Algeria and Benin, one was left with the impression that the Ethiopian leader was no pushover when it comes to responsibility and accountability.
Many Ethiopians concur that despite the fact that their country has not gone through the rigours of African Peer Review assessment, they are happy to note that the current government has managed their national resources well. There are few corruption cases. Taxes are used for what they are intended. Government budgets are adhered to. Most of all, Zenawi has no patience with perennial whiners and government critics that are only too ready to spot mistakes and problems without offering alternative solutions. He is highly intolerant of corrupt public officials.
More often than not if caught, they would end up in jail. Talking of NEPAD and APRM initiatives, Zenawi seems to have delayed the implementation of the APRM in preference to the implementation of NEPAD programmes especially infrastructure reconstruction. He believes that if he can get infrastructure right first, the economy will take off and with booming business for Ethiopia, wealth will be created for Ethiopians that will culminate in better life and well being for all in Ethiopia. Only after that will he turn his attention to the softer issues of human rights and freedoms of speech.
However as it is, the development of infrastructure that includes the provision of water, electricity and communications services has already spurred service delivery, food security, education for all, healthcare and decent housing for thousands of Ethiopians.
Because Ethiopians are finding jobs in the new initiatives, employment rate is climbing.
Right now, Zenawi is looking up to South Africa, Botswana, Egypt, Libya and possibly Morocco and Tunisia as his role models. He is no longer interested in underperforming states such as Sudan, Tanzania, Kenya and Nigeria.

The fact is that the ethnic based regime of Meles Zenawi has transformed the country into an earthly hell where millions are starving to death and suffering from preventable diseases and malnutrion. It is true that the lives of Meles Zenawi and his ethnic followers have improved tremendously and they are enjoying the highest standard of living. When presenting the false achievements and success stories of their pay master,the belly filling cadres of Meles Zenawi do not want to mention the 30-40 billion dollars the west have invested in his regime. This is a very big sum and could help avoid famine and could develop the country to the level of providing for the basic necessities of the ordinary Ethiopians if it is in the hands of an Ethiopian government. Desite the billions of western aid and grants, the number of people needing emergency food aid is growing from year to year. Unemployment and poverty are also increasing at an alarming rate in the country. An Ethiopian government could have made a big difference with all these western billions of dollars but the west would not open their money bags to any regime intent on achieving a genuine development in its country. Let alone appreciating Meles Zenawi, many Ethiopians categorize him as the enemy of their country and would like him to leave their country. The cadres of Meles Zenawi talk about infrastructure and the likes which are just part of the schemes of corruptions and embezzlements enriching the vampristic officials and cadres of the regime as indicated by Professor Seid.

What Getachihu is talking about that misguided Ethiopian visitors from the diaspora and forign dignitaries are talking about with respect to buildings errected along the road to Bole Airport with massive foreign aid fund allocated for develpment project. These structures built by TPLF affiliated enterprises, except the belt way and perhaps airport are part of the infrastructure develpoment program and that is not limited to Addis Abeba and Mekele only. To say the least that kind of fund and budget support had never been available to Haile Sellasie regime and Dergue regime. Even if allocated wisely, it is only a trickle amount compared to what would be needed for the infrastructure of Addis Abeba alone let alone for the whole country, not to mention the lack of transparency and corruption. How do you explain the black out in some parts of the city interruption of water supply, telephone services and lack of interconnected sewer lines under the present lay out of the city.
Even Dergue would have focused on developing cottage industries in the rural towns, if it was not forced to waste time, money and human lives fighting EPLF and TPLF, to maintain the integrity and unity of Ethiopia. This is not to condone its adminitration and non-democratic rule, which the majority of Ethiopians never had even to these day.

Jonathan Evans, the head of MI5, voiced his concerns over increasing numbers of young men travelling to the East African country in an interview with the Daily Telegraph last month.
He talked of “networks that help individuals go and take part or provide support to extremist gangs in Somalia” and may return to attack Britain.
Michael Hayden, the outgoing head of the CIA, has said that the Ethiopian invasion of Somalia has “catalysed” expatriates around the world.

The student abandoned a course in business studies at Oxford Brookes University to join up with al-Shabaab [the Youth], an Islamic militia fighting the Somali government, according to Channel 4 news.
He crossed the border from Kenya and blew himself up at a checkpoint in the southern town of Baidoa in October 2007.
Ali Mohamed Ghedi, the Somali Prime Minister was staying at a hotel nearby and escaped unharmed but jihadi websites claimed that 20 Ethiopian soldiers were killed.

“I’m hearing it from parents,” he said. “They say [their children] are joining the jihad. I am hearing there are a lot of people.
“This is a big problem facing our community.”
Peter Neumann, a terrorism expert at King’s College London, said: “The numbers I hear [going from Britain to Somalia] are 50, 60, or 70 but in reality we don’t know.
“You don’t need big numbers for terrorism. Somalia will never become another Pakistan but that does not mean it is not a threat.”
One young man outside a west London mosque was adamant it was his right to go to Somalia to fight.
He said: “If American troops can go from Arizona to Iraq then someone can leave this area and go to Somalia.”
While travel to and from Pakistan remains the major concern for the security services, Britain is also home to the largest Somali community in Europe, estimated at over 100,000.
Two of the failed July 21 bombers, Yassin Omar and Ramzi Mohammed, arrived in Britain from Somalia as refugees although they were radicalised after their arrival.

The Prime Minister ordered government dignitaries to hand some of their assets back to the State in order to fight against accusations that they are enriching themselves.
The President of the Oromia Regional State, Abadula Gemeda(real name: Menase Wolde Giorgis), has accepted to hand a villa back to the State in response to an appeal by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. The former minister Junedin Sado yielded a plot of land he owned but did not use. Other officials in the EPRDF (governing coalition) and the TPLF (the regime’s hard core), however, have declined to follow the example, stating that they had paid with blood for all they own today. Executives in the ANDM such as Addisu Legese (the owner of the Papyrus Hotel in Bahar Dar), Bereket Simon (road haulage) and Tefera Walwa (refuse collection) preferred to remain silent on the matter. Meanwhile, Abadula Gemeda has attributed land to President Girma Woldegiorgis at Alem Gena, near Addis Ababa, where the expropriated peasants are complaining that they have not been paid any compensation.

Birr. “The issue was brought to Meles Zenawi” The book reads, “We can’t touch Aba Dula as we don’t have any loyal person [from OPDO] to replace him. ” Zenawi responded.
The puppet president of the Oromia Region, Aba Dula Gemeda, who faced another challenge, had donated his villa to OPDO last week, according to the weekly reporter, Amharic news paper. The news paper also commented on Mr. Junedin Saddo, a senior OPDO member and minister of science and technology who donated his embezzled plot of land in Adama to his party. “Junedin didn’t say anything about his 3 million Birr worth villa at Letafo.”
The paper said.OPDO is accumulating wealth embezzled from the poor by its leaders.
Several sources are unfolding that the looting and suffering of citizens has continues in the last two decades of Meles Zenawi rule.

The recent phenomena signify embezzlements has become beyond Zenawi’s control. In his discussion with coffee exporters earlier this month, Meles Zenawi said “10,0 00 tons of coffee bound for export has disappeared recently”. This bound of coffee worth about 20 to 23 million dollars.
Professor Seid Hassan’s analysis gainsays Zenawi’s anti-corruption effort. Professor Seid Hassan links the systemic and structural nature of corruption with ethno-centric minority rule. One can not reasonably expect to root out corruption by a one-party, one-man dictatorship setting up a fake anti-corruption commission. It is simply meant to paying lip-service to the cause of good governance to decieve donor countries.

While are talkng about skirmishes over scessionism, corruption and embzzelment and agrandaziment of the current regime, another article on Ethiomedia was posted by Reuters on the formation of Alliance of Ethiopian loyalist opposions. These alliance of UDJP completes the description of the political model for UDJP with Gebru Asrat of Tigrai Harena elected as Chairman of the alliance. These political modelof UDJP sustains and /or replaces the current regime with the likes of Seye Abrha of Medrek and Gebru Asrat of Tigrai Harena, the two sides of the same coin with TPLF and proponent of Ethnofedralism of Beyene Petros, one of lame duck parliamentarians and the above two leaders.
Connect this development with their recent appeal of the loyalist opposition to Mr. Carter, an Envoy to the Horn of Africa, who in one voice asked the US Government to put pressure on the current regime to provide them with political space, as if political space is a quantitave event instead of a qulitative event. You either have it or you do not have it. To achieve that political space, they have to be engaged in a peaceful struggle as the hardliners and US government could only facilitate that struggle for freedom , democracy and humanright conditions through its legislative process that is in congress as HR2003/S3457.
To the diaspora supporters of UDJ that fall into the three of four catagories stipulated earlier, thses might be good news, but it is bad news for the majority of Ethiopians at home, which leaves the heavy lifting of the struggle to the hardliners for peace, freedom (political, economic), territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ethiopia.

One thing we have common with any government in Ethiopia is the fact we all stand for the territorial integerity of Ethiopia. We should condemn the secessionist forces whether in Ogaden or Oromo or in any other part of our country. The ONLF is being supported by the archenemies of Ethiopia like Egypt, Sudan, Iran and some european countries. USA supports secessionist forces like ONLF and OLF.
As patriots we have to stand with Meles Zenawi and our heroic army. We have to condemn and hunt the rebels under the name ONLF. Our political differences with Zenawi should be only on how to develop united Ethiopia. We support the Ogadeni people and will provide woth everything necessary, because they are us- Ethiopians. The government should save the people from atrocities of the secssionist forces.
If we examine our recent history, we note an international consipracy to destroy our country as the oldest civilization in the world. We have to prepare ourselves to foil such conspiracy. THE PEOPLE OF VIETNAM ARE OUR EXAMPLE!!!

I sympathize for the consequence I can imagine. I think most Tigrians have sensed the out come. Zenawi should encourage indepedent minds in Tigray, this being the only thing he can contribute to the unity of the people of Tigray (Tigray Ethiopia and Tigray “Eritrea”). The leaders of the people of Tigray will pay the necessary sacrifices to pave the way for unity. We do not need people like Issayas and co amidst us. They have to go to hell. Amharic shall be the national language and every child in Ethiopia will have to learn it. We can not have development and peace if we are unable to communicate in a common language. Ethinc federalism shall be demolished. We need only small provinces so that we can manage the development issue in a rapid way. We have only ONE nation Ethiopia.
Oromo are not the majority. The majority are the mixed tribes which make more than 80% of the population. Ethiopia is the oldest nation in the world and the melting pot of all tribes in what is called now Ethiopia. The somali people are part of ancient Ethiopia. Names like Degabehur are Ethiopian.
Wedi Adwa! We have to regain our territories. There is no peace in Ethiopia. To have peace, you have to eliminate the potential causes for war. One cause of continous war is Issayas and Meles. They have to be eliminated and replaced by a new leader who can unite all territories of Ethiopia under one leadership. Eritrea and Djoubiti should be given back to Ethiopia by all means necessary. We have to declare war on these areas and get them back. How are you afraid? Ethiopia has the means to do it. The international community is conpiring against Ethiopia and we have to stop it. Those people talking about Tigreans and descendance from Axum, stop this foolish speculations. In the first place, the Axumites are not Tigrayans, they have never spoken Tigrigna, the fact that remnants of the axum kingdom are found in Axum doesn’t necessarily make todays’ inhabitants of the area descendants. There is not any established historical fact for this link.
Shabia can not disintegrate Ethiopians as easily as his childhood toys. Don’t you have respect for yourself? how could a tiny country with not more than 50 years of separate existence can disintegrate the old and respected ancient country like Ethiopia?

(22 Feb. 09) Dozens of students are injured and arrested after inter-ethnic conflict sparked at Bahir Dar University, 578 kilometres from Addis Ababa, primarily between the Amhara and Tigrean ethnic students, since Wednesday-18- Feb, EMF source said.
Many Amhara ethnic students have been thrown to jail and tension is growing high until Sunday between Zenawi’s federal police and university students, according to our sources.
The TPLF cadres in the university are the source of the inter-ethnic conflict by provoking the Amhara ethnic students. The students were reportedly annoyed by Tigrigna speaking cadres who are installed in the university to spy them that cause aggressive reactions. Schools are unlikely to begin on Monday as Bahir Dar’s Peda collage and Poly University are still surrounded by Zenawi’s soldiers.

I wonder your stand of Ethiopia. Opposing the current regime is something else, and instigating the propaganda of the ONLF. But the one who fight for independence or surogative aim should also oppose.
