2 February 2009 (EMF) – Barack Obama’s envoy, a career diplomat and acting Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Philip Carter, talked to main opposition leaders in Addis Ababa on Friday, source said. Acting Assistant Secretary of State Spoke to Dr. Merera Gudina, Prof. Beyene Petros, Dr. Hailu Araya, Dr. Negaso Gidada, Mr. Temesgen Zewde and Mr. Seye Abraha over ever worsening political repression and economic setback the country is facing.
During the meeting, opposition leaders, in one voce, informed Mr. Philip Carter the end of political space for opposition. They expressed concern on continuous repressions against dissents by the incumbent regime.
Oppositions asked the Obama administration to exert pressure on the government of Meles Zenawi to release political prisoners, open the political space and allow observers for the upcoming elections.
Mr. Philip told the opposition leaders that the new US administration is seriously concern with the human rights situation in Ethiopia. The Acting Assistant Secretary of State, Mr. Philip Carter has also met with Meles Zenawi, but the content of the discussion was not revealed.
The new US administration is desirous to change existing Bush foreign policy towards the horn of Africa.
Obama’s radical actions to change U.S. foreign policy has threatened Ethiopia’s dictator, Meles Zenawi, who exploited the “War on Terror” to win support from the Bush administration, despite it’s gross human rights abuses documented by International Human Rights Groups.

Most of the above news piece is untrue since the new US administration of Barack Obama has expressed its interest to strenghten the long standing bilateral relations. US and western foreign policies on Africa prioritize stability and development and the regime of Meles Zenawi is their best choice since it has brought stability and reform in the country.
Without Meles Zenawi in power and control, the US knows that Ethiopia and the entire horn region will descend inot chaos. The exclusion of the Amharas from any political life in the country is also in the best interest of the US and other western countries. The Amharas are not willing enough to accept the supreamcy of the west or white race and consider themselves as equals. That is why the hardline Amhara dominated AEUP led by the hawk Engineer,Hailu Shawel has not been included in the discussion with the above mentioned US envoy. Dejavu all over again, with President Obama administration. The political model of UDJP that of sustaining TPLF and /or replacing the current regime by the likes of seye and Tigrai Harena, speakes volumes about the visit to the oppositin parties particularly Seye abraha, by the envoy of the current administration to the exclusion of the AEUP.
As usual the hearts and minds of the Ethiopians are with the hardliners, unless your are talking stability and silencing the public could be maintained at the gun point, war over scessionism, divide and rule though ethnic fedralism rather than federated states of the original provinces, causing strife over water and graizing lands among smaller ethnic groups due to demarcation of land by ethninic boundries, and state ownership of lands and yet the state acts as real state agent selling of land to foreign investors and countries. The opposition parties are oppositions parties in name only, the result of which had been dismal in the past 17 years, by adding UDJP of “No change but durable democracy, where the current regime stipulates economic development preeceds democracy in east asian style to existing polical leaders, plus Tigrai Harena, who may have political support in the diaspora, but not in Ethiopia. These political support in the diaspora for UDJP as a moderate, a synonym for loyalist/Lizib opposition party and newly formed
conglomerates of seye abraha and Beyene Petros is only a gathering of like minded politician with no political agenda for a peaceful struggle to bring peace, freedom, territorial integrity and soverneity of Ethiopia. They are I believe by the diaspora by those looking for their self interest ahead of their national interest, by those who TPLF supporters looking for the lesser of two evils, with out loosing the ethnic dominance and exploitation, by those who are implicated with the current regime in the past looking for a way out by mantaining the status quo.
they are now labeling the nationwide inclusive party and diehard party as Amhara dominated and bashing the leaders, using the same strategy of dissiminating hatred on Amharas for the past 40 years as an oppressive regime of the nationalities; while the population as a whole was engaged in a class struggle and land reform, reform of the labour unions and individual freedom, but not for liberation and ethnization of nationalities. The politicians know deep in their hearts that the Amharas in the rurar areas did not benefit from the previous regimes as did the Tigrains in the rurar areas did not benefit that much from the current regime in spite of impartial development effort taking place at the expense of other rgions.
I believe all nationalities put their Ethiopiawint ahead of their ethnic identity, which is a reflection of the mosaic nature of the ethnicity, diffused by intermariage and migration of the society over several centuries. The current politicians are trying to assign boundries to ethinicity. It is like sorting out Texas into Hispanics and non-hispanics, whereas in Ethiopia the ethnicites are too many to manipupate for political gains.. divide and rule. political gains aside, it seems like integral calculs of disintegration, rather than integral calculus of summation.
What is appaling to me is these same scenario is going to repeat in a different form with the so called moderates and existing loyalist opposition parties and dissidents of TPLF to participate in the election without a precondition fullfiled to participate in the election. If they win theybecome as the alternative of the lesser of the two evils. It is dejavu all overagain. If they loose, it is back to where they are now with few more seats than before, because they do not have public support in the first palce. It is another dejavu all over again. The Ethiopians are served by these kind of political model floating around in the diaspora.

Meles due to meet opposition in Washington this week

The American government has invited Ethiopian opponents to Washington for talks with opposition leaders recently freed from prison. The latter group, led by Ms Birtukan Mideksa (ION 1222), came to the USA on its own steam two weeks ago. All were received at the State Department on 21 September by American officials working on the Africa and Ethiopia desks.
This meeting gathered Beyene Petros, Merera Gudina, the former President Negaso Gidada, Ayele Chemiso (an MP from the legal arm of the CUDP), Lidetu Ayalew, Berhanu Nega, Birtukan Mideksa and Hailu Araya.
Their discussions with the American officials concerned how the Ethiopian opposition could adopt a joint political platform so that it could take part in the next elections in Ethiopia with the approval of the Addis Ababa government.
They also discussed a strategy to sideline the hard wing of the opposition, consisting of Hailu Shawel and the EPRP, which wants nothing to do with the current EPRDF regime in Ethiopia. The talks are expected to continue with further meetings with the presence of Bulcha Demeksa, currently passing through Washington.
The American Deputy Secretary of State for African Affairs, Jendayi Frazer is expected to meet these Ethiopian opponents this week. This American mediation is consistent with the strategy devised by the US Ambassador to Addis Ababa Donald Yamamoto, intending to isolate Amhara radicals such as Hailu Shawel and the anti-EPRDF forces like the EPRP.

Why do you hate Amaras so much ? Remember, not all amaras profitted from amhara governments only central showa amaras is the one who profitted, the northern amharas (Gonder& Gojjam) were treated as trusted house niggers, they got nothing. Please do not generalize all Amaras.

Taking your comment as serious, but erroneous, misleading and deceptive politics prevailing in Ethiopia in the past 17 years, upto the present with UDJP, you need to support your statements 1-5 and 8 with facts from US foreign policy documents about the reasons the current US envoy, MR Philip Carter did not talk to AEUP officials.
If your statements are correct, why does the US envoy talked to the loyalist opposion leaders as a group instead of individually, when they have not formed a coalition yet, and knowing that they are only loyal opposition leaders that are not engaged in any kind of peaceful struggle for freedom and democracy. As such they are not a genuine opposition but sitting ducks with respect to their performances in the parliament. UDJP which falls in the same catagory after 2010 election will fall in the same catagory with its political model of sustaining TPLF regime and/or rplacing the current regime with likes of Seye Abraha and Gebru Asrat of Tigrai Harena, which are two sides of the same coin with TPLF, which are not engaged in peaceful struggle for peace, freedom, territorial integrity and sovergneity of Ethiopia.
You are also insinuating and undermining the strrugle of AEUP leadership as a struggle over supermacy between the white race and black race with US and European govenments rather than a struggle against regime over peace, freedom, teritorial integrity and sovergneity of Ethiopia. Yourare also labeling AEUP and perhaps the armed struggle as cooperating with anti-western regime in Asmara. While I do not support the armed struggle from the perspectives of Ginbot 7, your assertions to label these factions as anti-western instead of anti-woyane could not be validated, unless it is an additional prelude to label these factions as terrorist organizations against western interests, over on top of the false charges assigned to Kinijit leaders in the past.
Are you forgetting the US congress is advancing the the peaceful struggle through HR 2003, inspite of the fact, I do not fathom the direction the current US envoy is heading to in the context of President Obama adminstration, with policy changes for the horn of Arfica.

Tedi look at your equation interms of a sissaw, if Eyassu=mellese as being fierce opponents to each other, and Hailu = Eyassu because the they are equally strong resistance to mellese, then Hailu Shawel = mellesse, because both Eyassu and Hailu shawel pose equal resistence to mellese. This leaves UDJP and Ginbot 7 out of the equation, because they are not following the path of a resistence to TPLF.
Look at what the resistence leaders are requesting Mr. Philip: Opposition leaders, in one voice, informed Mr. Philip Carter the end of political space for opposition”, and went on to request forfor US to exert pressure to release political prisoners, open political space and allow observers for the ucoming elections. What does this tell you interms of being a formidable resistance to the current regime?
Political space is qualitative not quantitative, you either have it or you do not have it, otherwise it will be more of the same if they consider that need more polical space than before, which gave them the opportunity to have the number of seats they have now, which put them in a lame duck position.
