JAN 31 2009 (Dagmawi Blog)– About Five Million Ethiopians Need Food Aid. WHY? After 18 years of a supposedly pro-farmer government, why are we still here? Look at the figure below from the World Bank Report (2008): Ethiopia Agriculture and Rural Development Public Expenditure Review 1997/98 - 2005/06. The TPLF/EPRDF could not even restore per capita agricultural GDP to levels beyond that of the war-torn Mengistu era. This is despite a huge increase in spending (driven largely by foreign aid)
The problem with the Derg and the TPLF/EPRDF is the same. The world has known for many years now that socialized agriculture produces poor results. But the TPLF/EPRDF is intensifying its control of the countryside. Its cadre system controls fertilizer distribution. Its rural cadres control land distribution. Its party-affiliated companies control marketing. Its cadres control microfinance institutions. Private enterprises are squeezed out. Surplus from this agricultural “rent-seeking” goes to fund TPLF/EPRDF party work. Its a vicious cycle of control.
Even if the TPLFs monopoly control of agricultural inputs and outputs was a good idea, the centralized, top-down, Leninist organization of the TPLF limits the efficiency of the system.
- “Autocratic hierarchies have to contend with limitations on their performance because of weak accountability and insufficient flows of information. Their top-down, closed structure chokes off information from outside sources and distorts it, due to imperatives of political control.”"Closed political systems are prone to policy mistakes arising from bad information. The historical record of tyrannies, despotisms, and dictatorships bears this out.”— D. Deudney and G.J. Ikenberry, The Myth of Autocratic Revival - Why Liberal Democracy Will Prevail. Foreign Policy, January/February 2009
But some people have lots of food. Ethiopia, the most starvation-prone country in the world, has probably the most obese president in the world. Obese leaders in a famine country - a fitting symbol of “revolutionary democracy”.

What would you expect from a goverment whose secretary of agriculture is a man with physical education background?

The quickest way to increase per capital income (GDP/pop) woyane style has been to slash population figures from those ethnics they call “neftegna”- amhara and gurage. Yet look what the numbers are telling!

The Amhara dominated governments ruled Ethiopia for the last 100+ years, in the result they destroyed the country incorrigble beyond imagination. The only legacy the Amhara dominated governments attributed to Ethiopia is Mass starvation,War,Illitract,Tribalism,Technological backwardness,Mass genocidal crime against Oromo-Tigrean and Eritreans, culture of tribalism/narrow mindedness.
It will take seven generations to correct and fix the socioeconomic mess the Amhara dominated governments caused.

getachew mequanent, get life you pennyless scumbag: there is more to life than demonizing amhara. You know the truth in your hurt, but you are trying to deny that, or worse you are putting articial facts into your head as you read it from aigaforum.
In both cases you need to see a doctor ASAP. you need help. looooooool

I am surprise, only five millions required food aid, considering where the country been for the last several decades, this is the country spent millions of dollars per a fighter jet to bomb its own citizens, while millions of Ethiopians dieing of starvation.
Will the present government of Ethiopia make Ethiopia like another America in the next 20 or 40 years ? Not a chance.

Thank you! Mr. Langano,
It is the truth, you nailed it.
For the past 100 years all education opportunity and educational access was given in discrimination to Amhara tribes only by Amhara dominated governments in order to creat and preserve amhara aristocracy class through arteficial means of educational discrimination.
Oromos,Tigreans and all other non Amhara Ethiopians were denied same opportunity and kept illitrate, this is why all higher learning institutions High schools, colleges, universities discriminatelly erected in amhara dominated regions only for the last 100 years.

China, Cuba, Vietnam etc have nationalised land and yet have surplus in agricultural production. Dagmawi is an idiot, who does not see things relatively. There are policy mistakes under the totalitarian regime of Meles Zenawi. But the state ownership of land is not the main cause of agricultural underproduction.

I think Gambella is a person from open university or civil college where monkeys with no idea go to school, he may also be a parrot repeating what his dull master meles kizenawi says. You know why ethiopia is still struggling for survival? it has people like gambella, kizenawi, bekit, sibaket nega, aba ‘dula’,tefera welaway, addisu H,Dawit H,seyoum H,LIdetu X,Beyene X,Himawi h,Gunedin big X the professor whom we saw on the debet, azeb S and so many others with stone head……

The Amhara tribalist fake lazy king(Menelike) did not only invaded oromos and stolen oromos land to reward stoeln oromos land to his own tribe (Amhara tribe). The Amhara unthinking lazy king (Menelike) sold Etritrea/part of Tigraye in order to weaken and devide Tigreans domestic political influence.

..POSSIBLE TO END 100 YEARS OF EDUCATIONAL DISCRIMINATION
I am glad the present government of ethiopia giving equal educational opportunity and equal access to all ethiopians without tribal discrimination, i am sure such unbiast just action will creat balance and justice to all ethiopians. In the past 100 years all education was given to Amharas only by Amhara dominated governments, that is why even though the Amhara`s represent less than 12% of ethiopias population but hold 79% of Ethiopias professional position and professional job.

Please someone who is more enlighten than I am, read and summarize this internal World Bank report to Ethiopians (Ethiopia: Country Assistance Evaluation, 1998 – 2006 - http://lnweb90.worldbank.org/oed/oeddoclib.nsf/DocUNIDViewForJavaSearch/B7254927D0BBE8E7852574810052EEB2/$file/EthiopiaCAE.pdf). It will shed light on how international organizations like World Bank despite internal knowledge of what is going on the ground are willing to lend their hand to despots like ours without any precondition, thus perpatuing the misery and oppression of 70 million people and in the long run contributing to worsening of the situation than resolving it . I am terribly disappointing with these organizations. They should know better that without check and balance or presence of good governess in one form or shape, it will be extremely difficult to see how the aid which they are giving blindly can become effective. In fact it has become the main source of corruption and embezzlements, and the source of strength for regime which sole occupation has become staying in power and with huge army of rent seekers.

Members of the crimefamily are wealthy and cruel. Babies have left in the streets because their young mothers were sent to the middleEast to customers who could never be satisfied with over-supply the regim’s agents sent them on a daily basis.
yes, millions of citizens are punished hard because they don’t have food to feed themselves and their loved ones becsause the regime did never care and would never care about the citizens in their own country. The invaders are strangers doing strange things to the citzens.
