EU grants 250 million euros to Ethiopia
ADDIS ABABA (AFP) — The European Union has given Ethiopia 251 million euros (322 million dollars) in aid to boost development projects across the Horn of Africa nation, the government said Friday.
The agreement was signed Thursday by the bloc’s Director of Aid to sub-saharan Africa, Carribean and Pacific regions Gary Quince and Ethiopia’s Finance and Economic Development Minister Sufian Ahmed.
“The grant will be used for development assistance through road sector policy support… forest management and to implement some other development activities,” the finance ministry said in a statement.
The EU is one of the top development contributors to Ethiopia, an impoverished country of 77 million and among the world’s top aid recipients.

DJIBOUTI, Jan 29 (Reuters) - Djibouti will not be pushed into war with its Horn of Africa neighbour Eritrea and will exhaust all legal means to settle a long-running border row, the Djibouti president said in an interview.
The two nations, on a crucial shipping lane linking Europe to Asia, clashed in June after Djibouti accused Eritrea of moving troops across the border. Eritrea denies the accusations. A dozen Djiboutian soldiers were killed in the fighting.
The United Nations’ Security Council passed a resolution on Jan. 14 giving Eritrea five weeks to withdraw its forces from the Red Sea coastal area of Ras Doumeira and Doumeira Island — a demand quickly rejected by Asmara.
“They want to lure us into war. But we will not do it. We will exhaust all the legal solutions,” Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh, 61, told Reuters in an interview at the colonial-era presidential palace on Wednesday.
Djibouti hosts France’s largest military base in Africa and also a major U.S. base. The country’s modern port is used by foreign navies patrolling the busy shipping lanes off the coast of Somalia to fight piracy.
The former French colony of some 800,000 people, which also borders Somalia, is the main route to the sea for Ethiopia — Eritrea’s arch enemy and Washington’s chief regional ally.
Guelleh said Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki would most likely try and block a U.N. team from visiting the disputed area to compile a report for Secretary General Ban Ki-moon once the five-week deadline was up.
“Because what interests him is Ethiopia. It’s not working. He has problems with Ethiopia, but not us. Why is he making us the hostages?” said Guelleh.
He said Eritrea was now trying to court Iran by sending ministerial delegations to the Islamic Republic, perhaps with a view to sending Washington a warning message.
“But they are not listening. He’s going to lose there as well. You don’t win by threatening people,” said Guelleh.
Critics say Eritrea has isolated itself, is a danger to security in the Horn of Africa and is acting as a destabilising force in both Ethiopia and Somalia.
But Asmara says it has long been the victim of pro-Ethiopian prejudice and unfair meddling by the international community, particularly in its border dispute with Addis Ababa.
Djibouti has been Ethiopia’s main gateway for imports and exports since it lost the ports of Assab and Masawa when Eritrea won its independence in the early 1990s after a 30-year war.
The U.N. Security Council demanded in its resolution earlier this month that Eritrea acknowledge its border dispute with Djibouti and participate in diplomatic efforts to resolve it.
Asmara accuses Security Council members of ignoring what it called breaches of international law by Ethiopia, with which it fought a 1998-2000 border war that killed 70,000 people.

Better late than never. MEP’S, Except the Honerable Ana gomez are asking the President of European commission, to take action according to Cotonou agreement, concerning human right situation in Ethiopia,the arrest of Birtukan Mideksa, the charity law and crimes against humanity by Zenawi regime.The only thing new are the arrest of Birtukan Mideksa and the Charity law, they have not acted upon the previous two incidences either through legislature similar to that in the US, or though the president of the Europpean Commission acting upon the Cotonou agreement, what ever the cotonou agreement entails. They did not even mention the political prisonors langushing at various concentration camps,except the arrest of Birtukan Midekssa, but gracefully mentioned crimes against humanity, which may be a consoling factor as it may include all attrocities committed by the current regime.
Yet Ethiopians in the diaspora are not united to be beneficiary of these gestures from the MEP’S, bickering with each other, not being able to think outside of the box they are trapped in. They are trapped in deceptive and subversive politics of UDJP and Ginbot 7, which nevertheless serves their own personal interest rather than the national interest.

The Unity for Democracy and Justice Party UDJP an opposition party in Ethiopia was rearrested following a trip she made to Europe in Nov.2008. who was imprisoned for life last month and sent to prison on Dec 29,2008.
The leader of Ethiopia’s unity for Democracy Justice Party, Birtukan Mideksa in Addis Ababa Kaliti Prison. Ethiopian Federal Police re-arrested opposition leader Mideksa a year after she was released on a pardon following her arrest during the country’s disputed 2005 elections. she and dozens of other opposition leaders were the 2005 elections. security forces killed 193 protesters in Addis Ababa in the aftermath of the 2005 elections. Mideksa was jailed along with 126 other opposition leaders. she was widely seen as the party’s most charismatic figure and a prime Minister hopeful her strong effort to reconstitute and lead a strong party which is poised to strongly contest the monopoly of the ruling party in the coming election. and her potential for wide support among members of Ethiopia’s two largest ethnic groups oromos, Amaharas.

Mean while, Freedom and Justice rally by all Ethiopians must bring success.
The Human brain needs to be learned and trained to achieve its objective. Justice needs independent minded. be administered without fear or favor. The judges must be impartial and honest.
TPLF appoints the judges not depending on their integrity, impartially, wisdom and educational background but depending on their political loyalty and therefore the judges are dependent. They are not free to interpret the law according to their position. They don’t have right to be granted tenure.
The banners we carry on this coming protest calls for Justice in Ethiopia, particularly in Ogaden and the release of all Political Prisoners. Ogaden has been the main victim of Somalia adventure. Somalia is now where it was before the invasion after thousands of innocent lives lost. its shameful to hear.
when we see what TPLF is doing its absolutely the denial of Justice. Decision making process in Ethiopia is dead.
The TPLF was challenged by the intellectuals and visionary citizens of the country among many other educated Ethiopians.
There are thousands of prisoners who were not given decision but forgotten in different custodians, jails and police stations.
The lawyers and judges were dropped and fired from their positions and replaced the political loyalists and those who were recruited by the ruling TPLF. Both categories mostly Zero knowledge interpretation of law. However be administrated without fear or favor.
Freedom and justice around the world we ask you to help and do everything in your power to pressure the government of Meles Zenawi to immediately release MS: Birtukan and others.

Birtukan Mideksa’s imprisonment comes at a high cost to her personal life. However, it rekindles the desire for freedom for Ethiopians. Of course, she repeatedly said she is committed to freeing that nation of this tyranny. As such, let’s all go out there and fight for the freedom of Birtukan, by extension that of Ethiopia.
One of the ways to fight this horror is by making ordinary people(in the west) be aware of the situation in our country. Tell your co-workers how children are being raped by this thuggish ruler’s trained militia. Tell people how lynching is a formal way of punishment for political dissent. Reminding them of the fact that the same dictator has been in power for 19 years is also important. Mention the kind of lavish life style these thugs lead while the people are starving. Ask them to call their congress people. People in the west care about these issues. The leaders also care about how their constituents feel about these issue. Chances are woyanes won’t give up power willingly. However, such headstart will go a long way in the prosecution of these criminals in the future. Just like new generation of jewish citizens are out there searching for ever and each nazi criminals as we speak, we will be going after these criminals for generations to come.
