By Michael Chebsi - ADDIS ABABA, Jan 12 (IPS) - Bertukan Mideksa has a reputation in Ethiopia as a competent politician, but voters will not be able to cast ballots for her in the next national election. The revocation of her 2007 pardon has sent a chill through Ethiopia’s opposition parties.
After the 2005 elections, opposition protests against irregularities in the polls were followed by violent clashes in the streets. More than 100 opposition leaders were arrested. Mideksa was charged with treason, outrage against the constitution, inciting armed rebellion and more.
She spent two years in jail before being convicted and sentenced to life in prison in July 2007 along with 34 others. They were immediately pardoned by President Girma W. Giorgis; the government announced that they had requested a pardon and expressed remorse for their wrongdoings.
But while on tour in Europe in November 2008, Mideksa denied making a request for state pardon for the post-election violence. And on her return to Ethiopia, she told Unity for Democracy and Justice party adherents that her release from jail was the result of political negotiations, not government sympathy.
The Ethiopian government responded furiously with an ultimatum demanding that she categorically retract her claims within three days or face revocation of the pardon.
“I have yet to compose my thoughts, and make a decision,” Mideksa told IPS in a telephone interview in Addis Ababa on Dec 28, just a day before she was sent to a federal prison.
Worrying sign for opposition
Her re-arrest has caused great indignation among opposition politicians who have condemned the act as part of a familiar pre-election strategy by the ruling party to intimidate its opponents ahead of elections scheduled for May 2010.
Mideksa is not the only opposition politician to be thrown in jail of late. On Oct. 30, the federal police commission arrested Bekele Jirata, the secretary general of another opposition party, the Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement. He is accused of having a clandestine links to the rebel group Oromo Libration Front (OLF).
Opposition politicians are worried that the signal sent by these arrests will reinforce those who think peaceful political change in Ethiopia is not viable.
After their release in 2007, Mideksa and Dr. Berhanu Nega, at the time mayor-elect of Addis Ababa, debated this question. Nega came out of prison believing that armed struggle is the only way to attain political power in Ethiopia. Mideksa resisted the idea vehemently. Nega is now in the United States heading Ginbot 7, a new political party.
In an opinion piece published in the largest Amharic weekly Addis Neger, in reaction to the government’s ultimatum, it was argued that the government’s actions would make Nega feel vindicated.
“The government is totally reducing us to nothing,” says Professor Beyene Petros, opposition MP and chairman of the United Ethiopian Democratic Forces. “The ruling party that first assumed power with a coup is indirectly telling the opposition to follow suit; that gaining power through the ballot box is impossible.”
The veteran politician sees a country sliding backwards in terms of creating a competitive political landscape. “The door that was half opened in the 2005 election is now fully closed,” he said.
Petros is not the only opposition leader who has gloomy picture of what has to come. Engineer Gizachew Shiferaw, deputy chairman of Mideksa’s UDJ, shares his concern. “The arrest of Mideksa is a clear sign of intimidation,” he told IPS. “We will only participate in the upcoming election if it is free and fair.”
The incarceration of the mother of one has exacerbated the existing political impasse between the opposition and the government with officials bashing critics. The opposition insists her arrest is part of a plan by the ruling party to create a single party supremacy in the country, shunning a multi-party system.
The government rejects opposition claims that the ruling party is sabotaging multi-party government.
“Her arrest is legal and not political,” says the Justice Ministry.
But the decision of several prominent leaders of Ethiopia’s opposition to remain outside the country indicates fading belief that peaceful opposition will bear fruit. Many of those who remain in the country expect very little from national elections next year.
The fear is that a growing number may instead consider following the route of armed struggle as taken up by the OLF years ago.

It is an apparent fact that peacefull strugle is impossible in Ethiopia. Let’s look at what kind of pressure OLF/ONLF are creating to TPLF. Meles Zenawi always calls for negotiation with them only because they are not using the peaceful strugle. However, CUD/UDJ has chosen peaceful strugle, but ended up being victim of oppression and tyrany. Meles Zenawi will never propose negotiation or discussion with peacefull opoositions.

Ginbot 7 should gather ideas from the Ethiopian public on how to wage its war against Woyanne. I am sure there are plenty of useful ideas out there that beg to be heard. My own suggestion to the military wing of Ginbot 7 is to introduce itself with a bang! I am talking about a big impact operation that will convince the Ethiopian people about Ginbot 7’s readiness to confront and defeat Woyanne at its own game. No mickey mouse bombings of taxi’s and gas stations please! and do not repeat EPRP’S failed strategy of armed resistance during the Derg era. But individuals and businesses associated with Woyanne regime should be fair game regardless of their background. Don’t allow Woyanne to play the ethnic card and cry foul. You have to have fighters that are willing to give up their lives on a daring mission. These specially trained fighters(martyrs) will not blink an eye to cause maximum damage since their mission is a one way ticket to glory. One last suggestion, if you happen to kill a big name Woyanne, say Bereket Simon, please carve Birtukan’s name on his back with a long sharp edged knife of course!

One of the effective methods to fight the woyannes is to boycott their businesses and socially isolate their members and supporters. The cruelty of the woyanne regime and injustice the injustice it is committing must unite us to use all the means to fight the woyannes. The Ethiopian Diaspora should stop using the woyanne and affliated financial channels to send money home. We should also avoid flying the woyanne controlled and owned carrier, the Ethiopian airlines. There are known members and supporters of the brutal woyanne regime in the Diaspora. These woyannes must be excluded from all our cultural and social gatherings including churches, sports and events where Ethiopians come together.
We must also avoid visiting restuarants and other businesses owned and run by the members and supporters of the woyanne regime. There are indications that the the woyanne officials are investing their ill gotten money in the western world where many Ethiopians are living. These investments include restaurants where they sell injera and liquors or beer from Ethiopia. The Diaspora should not use these products as the businesses dealing in them are the woyanne ones.

Solution: 1- we ethiopians have only have to assume that weyane is the no ONE enemy of the ethiopians.
2- We have either support the best political parties like Ginbot 7 finacially, idealy, and morally, or find our own ways to fight weyane or just to get rid of weyane.
3- we ethiopians do not have to spend more time on argumentative ideas, rather lets spend more time on practical moves against weyane.

Like many other polticians you are in the business of Queen maker.
For all the potential and the good look - Birtukan is not yet ready to be a leader of a very complicated poltical struggle in Ethiopia. Although she has the potential she is not yet ready.
I can say this is a tradional mistake in Ethiopia. If we look back - in 1966 a young and talkative officer called Mengistu h/m was the choice of many including the youth. People just look in the surface or take a side on intrigue or power struggle and they never look back. That is a tragedy. We repeated that mistake in 2005 with Lidetu.
Birtukan :
- she is sensitive and fragile to just be a leader.
- she is not sherwd but open.
- she can be easliy maniplated by expierenced intriguers.
- It may seems silly but she is a single mother who shares the same father name with her daughter. In a deeply relgious country - she is not a role model.
Having said the above, we just have to pray for her release.
And for you Diasporans - please work for the poltical process of the 8 points of CUD than concentrating on queen or king making.
For Mesfin w/m - pls. stop using this young lady to beat your poltical rivals.
For Dr. Nega - pls. stay away from her.
For Eng. HS - pls. leave her alone to develop in her own.
Give her 10 year and we may see a diffent person. But she has to start from the bottom not from up.

Woyannes are staying in power because Ethiopians both in the country and abroad, are not united in their action and stand against them. The Diaspora can practically support the struggle against the blood thirsty regime of Meles Zenawi, through the following effective ways.
1. Boycotting the woyanne regime in its entirety and its business empires.
2. Cornering and isolating all the members and supporters of the
woyannes in all our social events and gatherings including
churches and weddings.
For example the Oromo communities living abroad are applying these methods and if all Ethiopians follow in their foot steps, we will be able to weaken and even destroy the economic power of the woyannes. If we manage to weaken their economies, then many of the so called HODAM woyanne cadres and supporters will abandon them. So if the Diaspora is really serious about the struggle against the woyanne rule, then they should apply the boycott and support the struggle. Appeasing and pleading with the woyannes have not produced any thing other than emboldening them and humiliation at their hands. A good example is the recent arrest and beating of the oromo woman Birtukan Mideksa and her supposedly close advisor, professor Mesfin W/mariam. Both were known to be woyanne appeasers and apologists. We all remember the embarassing official appology Birtukan has made to the members and supporters of Meles Zenawi during her tour in the US in 2007. The woyannes have not accepted her flirtation with their members and supporters and were mocking her. Now they have put her back in their jail and polishing her for their next agenda, that is their coming elections and ensuring her loyalty to them.

You have put it in the right perspective and the business empire of the woyannes must be one of the primary targets of Ethiopians. The skinny woyannes who came bare footed when they invaded and occupied our land, are now billionaires or multi-millionaires. They are pillaging our country and accumulating wealth at the expense of millions of Ethiopians who are on the edge of death and starvation. Despite this, it is really heart breaking to witness the fact that there are many Ethiopians in the Diaspora who are doing businness with the woyanne facsists who are brutlaizing and terrorising the whole country except, their rocky republic.
These greedy or Hodam souls are contributing to the woyanne system and must be held accountable for their complicity with the murderers.
Our struggle should also be directed at these useless souls who have failed to see the reality outside of their stomach. It must be the duty of every Ethiopian to expose and shame them where ever they live or hide.

Meles said his regime was ready to discus a peace proposal with Eritrea, if Asmara feels ready to discuss peace, but would not rush into such discussions unless the Eritrean government expresses its wish to discuss peace.
“We are ready to wait for them until such a time when they feel the need for peace, at that time, we will be ready with our peace proposal,” Meles told journalists.
The Ethiopian Prime Minister dictator said he was aware of the Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki’s latest seven-hour long press interview, which bashed the Woyanne regime. He said it was less worrying to him “so long as they do not bloody my nose.”

The Ethiopian Review Intelligence Unit has learned that Ato Yaregal had sought political asylum in an east African country, and when his safety was threatened, he was taken to a third country.
Although Ato Yaregal was the President of Benishangul-Gumuz, a region that is abundantly fertile and rich in natural resources, he had little say in how the region was administered. As in all the other regions of Ethiopia, all important decisions are being made by officials of the Tigrean People Liberation Front (Woyanne) from Mekelle and Addis Ababa.
Ato Yaregal was particularly disconcerted by Woyanne’s recent instigation of ethnic conflicts between Oromos and Benishangul, which finally led him to join the opposition Ginbot 7 Movement, according to ER sources.
After joining Ginbot 7, Ato Yaregal was successful in passing highly valuable information about the regime’s criminal activities. When the Woyanne intelligence was getting close to him, he managed to escape with the help of Ginbot 7 local operatives.
Woyanne agents are currently threatening him with confiscating all his properties in the country and hurting members of his family, while reporting that he is abroad getting medical attention, in order to lure him into returning.
Ginbot 7 officials declined to comment on Ato Yaregal’s case.
