EMF - Addis Ababa (29 December 2008) Civilian clothed security picked up UDJ chairwoman Birtukan Midekasa around 2:00 PM today after roughing up 80 year old veteran human rights activist Professor Mesfin Weldemariam. Read also from Awramba Times…Amharic.
Birtukan, who is entangled in a bitter controversy with the EPRDF led government over the content of her release after the infamous treason trial of 2005, refused to recant statements she made during a working visit to Sweden last month. In an open letter released on Friday she maintained that her release from prison could not be reduced to a plain pardon as is being disingenuously alleged by the EPRDF led government ,but is rather a complex outcome of a protracted negotiation between her party and the government mediated by elders.
The pardon board convened an emergency meeting on Saturday to rubber stamp EPRDF’s pronouncement, and civilian clothed security agents picked her up from Prison Fellowship’s office today; where she and Professor Mesfin had gone at the behest of elders who are once again mediating between the EPRDF and the opposition.

I have no an inkling of surprise at this news! That is the inherent feature of Woyane–intimidation, killing, mass arrest, torture, evicting people from their jobs for perceived or real association with opposition forces, throwing people into jail based on trumped up charges etc…
But, what is even more shocking is that even under such dire situation there are some useless Ethiopians who spread hate, division and conspiracy among innocent Ethiopians at home and abroad (take the nominally opposition camps of Kidetu’s UEDP-MEDHIN and the old school EPRP but essentially fighting for TPLF and sustaining its misery on Ethiopians).
Kidetu’s “third way” approach to appease and work with bloodsucking Woyane is happening with complete disregard for the economic hardships and political repressions of Meles and Co against the Ethiopian people. On the other hand the senile and lazy EPRP remnants here in the Diaspora are busy attacking the progressive Dr. Berhanu as being former ally of Woyane and now pursuing to quench his power thirst, which is an absurd and blind accusation by the historical enemies and conspirators self-identified as EHAPA (sorry I donot mean to belittle contributions of those precious youngsters who unselfishly died for the freedom and rights of oppressed Ethiopians but the riziratz aroge EHAPAS are surely enemies.)
Any one who is really concerned about the survival of Ethiopia as a nation must without any hesitation join the progressive Movement of Ginbot7 and ensure that our Motherland Ethiopia is saved from the Hyena’s Mouth. Otherwise mouching around here on cyberspace and spreading cheap talks is no use for Ethiopia and our oppressed compatriots at home. One thing we should not forget is that it is not only Woyane who are the enemies of Ethiopia; but the likes of Kidetu and EPRP remnants are the real culprits along side with Meles, Bereket and Sebehat. It is long overdue that we identify the dangerous enemies and promising sons of Ethiopia.
As to whether a peaceful struggle would be a viable option to regain our rights and freedoms is obviously evident from what is going on right now. You had better attack the woyannes who are responsible for all the crimes and killings against Ethiopians, If you are really concerned about Birtukan and any other Ethiopian suffering at the hands of Meles Zenawi, your attacks should be directed at him. You should not accuse or blame parties who have never had any kind of connection or links with the woyanes. Instead you must know that some of the leaders of Genbot 7, you adore and worship had been serving woyannes and benefitting from the woyanne system. They can not deceive all Ethiopians since many of us remember their pas. They can confuse and deceive those who have not been following the Ethiopian politics and short memories. The Andinet Party made a tactical mistake. Birtukan should not have raised such issues. The party should focused on other issues like that of organising the ethiopian peeople in the various regions. The ruling party can use it’s powers to control the situation in it’s favour but also in the general interest of the public. EPRDF-TPLF is contributing to rebuildng Ethiopia, albeit with many errors and political suicides. Beware of the destructive propoganda coming from “eritrean” groups, who frequently visit ethiopian websites such as this with the aim sowing strife and discord among ethiopians. If “Eritrea” wants the well-being of Ethiopia and Ethiopia, why did “Eritrea” secede from Ethiopia and why is “Eritrea” bent to destroy Ethiopia. After all “Eritrea” has been part of Ethiopia since time immemorial except for the few years of Italian occupation from 1890-1952.

It was obvious that there was no a political space for the so called a ‘peaceful struggle’ under Meles Zenawi’s vicious ruling clique.
However, it was wise of the UDJP to give it a try and to prove that case for all to see especially the western powers.
Now with the president-elect Obama and a shifting priority for the world community, it is an abc of politics for the repressive TPLF/EPRDF regime to face the music of negative publicity and of disasters staring in its ugly face with no saviours in sight!

Source from Ato Getachew office, head of the Ethiopia intelligency buraua leaked that the reason for arrest of Birtukan is not what she said in Sweden.Her testmony regarding Ogaden case to Donald Pyne in congrass made Meles Zenawi so disappointed.Meles was waiting for the return of Birhanu Nega so that both would be charged with treason.Unfortunately,Birhanu Nega decided to stay outside rather than coming to Ethiopia.For this reason,Meles was so angry and it was so difficult to put Birtukan alone behind the Bar.So,they are looking for another way to attack Birtukan which they did.The time has come to take action and let’s contribute our part to Ginbot 7.We should call our self ‘Alicha’

We should still stand for peaceful struggle, can’t you see how the peaceful struggle is a nightmare to EPRDF? We should never go into chaos and create situations which puts thousands in to jail and others killed. EPRDF knows that it doesn’t have the slimmest chance of winning the support of the Ethiopian people. All the sentiments and the experiences of the 2005 election are still fresh in the people’s minds. The people know how to vote, EPRDF can’t do anything to change that unless they keep every voter at gunpoint. Can’t you see how hopeless they are?

I say this:
1- The issue raised to arrest Birtukan was a by gone issue. Why Birtukan raised it in Sweden. It was a dead issue. and
2- What is going to happen to the old man. They bit a 78 years old man.
What kind of rationality one expects from these thugs.
I pray both victims are ok.
3- are we going to continue to lamentcry every time Woyanne hits one of us. This kind of act is childish. We used to do it in child hood days. If one strong boy hits on a small boy, the victims yells and cries and would say if he is hit again he will hit back. But when the big guy hits him again the only option he has is to cry cry and weep again.
Meles knows our strength now and he knows he has a strong card to play with. Armed Struggle is the only solution. Otherwise keep on crying like the small child.

Knowing the very nature of Woayane and being well aware of the political culture of our country, the opprtunities seems being over shadowed bythe serious challenges we face. Yes, we are facing an extremely frastrated and ruthless regime which claimes that intimidating and killing innocent people is to protect its ‘constituiton.’
Dear concerned Ethiopians, it is the time to stand in a more united manner and take more organized and detrmined action. There is no doubt that this senseless and mad action by the tplf will have very grave consequences unless we are able not only to tell about the plight of our people but most importantly able to show that we can do what is necessary to stop the bloody regime of Meles.

Our ears are muffled with unbearable pain. Our eyes are shattered by misery. Our mouths are being denied their rights to speak, through our leaders. Dear God, speak, please speak, and save our historical nation, from entering into a civil war that we cannot afford. We have patiently waited for change. We continue to silently bare the pangs of hunger. Our mothers cannot nurse their babies. Our fathers, permanently unemployed, squander their days at Bars, wishing that the pain will go away by the power of Tej and Tela. Our young bodies bored and hopeless take it on reckless sex, to only discover that our bodies are now ravished by AIDS, and let it be we say, let the body part company from the soul, so that when we are gone, we shall meet God to purify us from pain, hunger and hopelessness.
I leave the legality of Ms. Birtukan’s right to recant or not recant, to our able lawyers, as important as the question might be. That is not what concerns me here.
My concern goes deeper, to the marrow of the bones. If our leaders, who are peacefully organizing the people to demand change cannot exercise that right, what rights are then allowed them by the constitution? Should not the rights of the people who are coming in record numbers to listen to their leaders, count for something, or is the democracy that the regime never fails to mention, a democracy that listen only to those who sing its praises?
I say to the people, this time we must resist the intimidation of our leaders by marching on every street, every road, and every corner within Ethiopia and its Diaspora. \
Resisting regimes which do not respect our leaders are simultaneously violating our existential and legal rights.
We will be remiss if we do not resist Ms. Birtukan’s right by the right constitutional measure of protest at the right time, for the right reason, at the right place, and for the absolutely right reason.
I must add, we must do this in millions, and Solidarity Movement for a New Ethiopia must take the lead, and put the Ethiopian people toward rendezvous with victory.

It seems paradoxical but it is still plausible to revisit and reassess where the country’s institutions are standing and who they are. At this stage I would like to initiate all public and private institutions, Churches, Mosques, Medias and personalities to make their final call to the country’s defense force. I think the usual rhetoric on the defense force doesn’t help much. We all know that we can’t claim that the defense force is constitutionally mandated to protect and defend the people of Ethiopia against terrorist Melse and his Cannibals, any arbitrary harm and aggression that cause to Ethiopia structural and human crisis. But our history and our spirit give the mandate to Ethiopian Defense Forces to defend and protect us, our property and the sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ethiopia.Thus, by saying so I am asking all stakeholders to make their final call to Ethiopia’s Defense Forces to take power, clean up Meles and his mess ; work on the transitional process to promise and commit establish a democratic government within two years time.

What even if Birtukan have changed her words before and after pardon which by all accounts all ethiopians know she did not.
The Ethiopian constitution is a plain joke for EPDRF regime. They just use it as a coin to flip/flop on the matter just to get their objective. Now, some of you have included Prof. Asrat and Teddy Afro are now included in ths camp by some commentators, while you would have included another AEUP editor jailed and the seizure of Andenette Gazzette, which may have helped the genuine peacefull struggle for freedom of speech, freedom of the press, etc. would make sense than to haller for personalities and demean other genuine factions for peaceful struggle. TPLF supporters who come to the rally of UDJP have nothing to say about the genuine oppsition except use the hatred campaing of using neftegna as deragatory word, when its a concept of building a country called Ethiopia as much as United stes builed a country called United States, and TPLF has been doing has been doing just the opposite in the last 18 years, while you can not unify on a national interest.
