Joe Michael - 25 Sept. 2008 — No matter how strong EPRDF is getting, it still lacks confidence when it comes to giving opportunity to its opponents. The ruling party, which is consisting of four ethnic based political parties, has been reportedly growing in organizational and financial resources. However, the apparent fact behind EPRDF’s advancement is that while it is growing and continually opening new offices through out the country, it has been closing opposition offices and has been denying them their rights to campaign freely.
In its seventh organizational congress that was held in Awassa, EPRDF declared that it has 4.5 million registered members. The party also stated that it has expanded its financial resourses and acknowledged that its assets have been augmented.
What ridicules such claim; however, is that EPRDF never wanted to see a strong opposition. Its perspective towards democracy remains unsighted that it dooms those with different political views as enemies.
Recently, the newly established UDJ opposition political party was facing serious difficulties to get its legal license. It is continually facing problems to assemble, to campaign, to get media access, etc. There are also many opposition parties who have suffered by EPRDF’s aggressive retribution post 2005 election. Furthermore, it is evidently proven that there are still remaining political prisoners, who were members of the former CUD party. The government media itself attested this fact by stating that the local mediators are working hard to have them released.
Regardless of the advancement EPRDF has declared, it is still afraid of competing with oppositions without intimidating and arresting them. Logically, it is paradoxical to propagate EPRDF’s growth while oppositions are forbidden to compete freely. It is awfully foolish for EPRDF members to be proud and claim that their political party is getting popular since opponents are getting beaten, intimidated, and kept in prison.
Opposition parties must be given equal opportunities to implement their political agendas. They should be able to campaign freely and must be allowed to have financial resources. What ever EPRDF is entitled for, the oppositions must be entitled too.

EPRDF is becomming like communist party in China. I think they have got a lesson from it. By denying the political and civil reights of our people they are dreaming to bring economic growth. It is like derg’s regime except some libraliztion in the economy and norrow space for opposition parties.
The up comming time is really gloomy and challenging for the opposition camp in Ethiopia. EPRDF is agressively blocking all the roads of peacefully opposition. This is the right time for those peacefull fighers in Ethiopia to investigate their position and the means of struggle. Hope they will design appropriate means of stuggle that is compatible with the circumstance.

The Haile Selassie cabinet was the only Government in Ethiopia who gave away power peacefully and they all drained into the Guillotine. Do you think EPRDF will follow suit. Absolutely not.
Look at the time indicator that advises us to advocate for G7. As for me, I guess that is the way out.
The world economy as well as the Ethiopian is staggering and gone misery. So the situation is ripe to organize and wipe out the sucking flees of Ethiopia. Do not give time to the EPRDF by waging a peaceful struggle. If you do they will buy time and will keep on fattening their already fattened stomachs and dig our graves

I am surprised they claim only 4.5million to be their member not all 80 million, the people of Ethiopia have no choice but to be a member of a party they are forced to be in to survive. The TPLF uses the name EPRDF to hide behind the facade and cheat the public. The TPLF is an ethnic party or liberation front with narrow support base and can not be competitive or strong. They have lost the election and are holding power by force. Ethiopia under the ethnic rule of Meles Zenawi is becoming the land of famine and abject poverty.

That was a good assessment of the situation on the ground, however, you need to stop calling, the 4 kilo thugs, EPRDF. Their true identity is imbeded in TIGRAI and they have been fighting for the prosperity of TIGRAI at the cost of other parts of the country. So how come you call such a narrow based, ethnically poisened criminal group EPRDF. The truth is their true name remains TPLF.
As to ur request for TPLF to let the oppositions to work freely, that is simply a good dream. TPLF will never ever do so, cos they have learned, very well, what, even a narrowly opened political space in ethiopia, can bring about for their confortable thron from the May 2005 election.

Both Mengistu and Meles are butchers and they love to stay in power all at the expence of Ethiopia. But, at least, Mengistu never hide his desire and, as far as I can recall, he never tells lies as a convenient tool to mislead the Ethiopian people. He may have been saying that the war in the North is being won when it actually was getting lost. But, that is a military tactic many leaders use and it is known as propaganda. Even the mighty US use that line of lie. But, I believe Mengistu was sincere in that he wanted all the best for Ethiopia unlike the little Chiwawa of Adwa and his gangs who could careless of Ethiopia. LACK OF SELF ASSESSMENT & EVALUATION
I believe the subject matter of this article should read “Oppositions Groups Lack Unity and Confidence” That would be a more appropriate subject matter to discuss and provide a solution for the core problem that has weakened the opposition groups at home and abroad.
The fact is almost the entire citizens at home and abroad with the exception of a few greedy self serving TPFL parasites no one supports the TPLF dynasty. However, they have manged to stay into power JUST BECAUSE the opposition parties and its leadership are egotistical and wreaked individuals who are unable to come together for a common cause to save our motherland from misery. As a single individual, I am less focused on EPRDF/TPLF strength or weakness yet, more concerned on how to bring the dysfunctional opposition groups into a united front to fight the common enemy at home.
My fellow countrymen, there is nothing new or old about TPLF and its objectives. They are a sworn enemy of Ethiopia before the came to power and they have proven their mission while in power. Hence, we shall be focused more following issues
a) Our loyalty and pledge shall be to our People and our Country not to any political party or opposition leaders self glory.
b) Our Ethnical, Political & Social diversity shall be the fiber of our unity as One People, Under One Flag.
c) Every Ethiopian shall actively participate under his/ her political umbrella to bring end to the TPLF tyranny.
d) Lets stop criticizing the other side to show political superiority amongst the opposition groups and divert our energy how to unite the opposition group.
e) Though European countries including the US may play a crucial role in economical and social embargo at the current regime, we should realize that Ethiopian can be free only by Ethiopian.

In reality EPRDF don’t have 4.5 million members like they claim.Only they want to confuse the people and the outside world.I know one thing for sure, the election which was performed on the last April tottaly fake.For example,Eprdf posted 100’s of its candidates in the kebele I live;and from these candidates I know five of them two of them are my families and three of them are my closest friends ,none of them eprdf members but,they told them one day prior to the election day they are on the list ,that does’nt mean they are eprdf members.EPRDF’s message from last election to the people is fear each other not to trust each other.In my conclusion I don’t think they have more than 450,000 members.

It’s sad that you want us to choose between two dictators. We should aspire for a great leader for our country. When I look back at the history of Ethiopia, our generation went through hell. I am sure most of the bloggers live ousitde, in the West, and we know what democracy is. I wish the best for my country, a leader who loves his country more than his own interests, who understands what democracy is, who respects the Constitution…etc
Anyway Ethiopia is becoming like China for the moment. We have even to be a member of the party to work for the governement (my cousin’ s daughter was asked if she has her party membership card when she wanted to apply for a government job).

Did you notice the anger and the stupidity of EPRDF supporters? I mean did you see the lack of intelect and richness of volgarity in their words? I am not joking here, just look and read all the EPRDF supporters’ messages. I ma not talking about spelling errors or gramatical mistakes. What I am talking about is the real message behind each of their comments.
It is real sad to witness such barbarity and ignorance. It’s very discouraging to the Ethiopian spirit. You can see the type of people we have to deal-with.
Above, the Sep. 25th comment of Teketef Lomi @ 9:57 am is a good example of such darkness and vulgarity. I hope he get help and manage his manner as well as his writings. This is, I think, a mental case that should be kept out of the narmal discourse. It is dark, it is un-enlightened, it’s discouraging, it’s bais, It’s banal.

My dear Abbebech, it seems to me that we are always new to the same situation. Those writing in support of the EPRDF are the true reflection of their masters. Look what their masters are doing to expand their hegemony. There is a saying that says ‘tell me your friends and I will tell you who you are without uttering a word” This people are not only lacking manners, but also lacks humble upbringing. Each one of us is a product of our background. These people are the crudest, rude and bad mannered individuals. Knowing not languages may not be their fault, but responsible for their mal adjusted behaviour. Unfortunately, you and I chose to be disabled. Who can stop them?

Recently I was in rural Ethiopia. All of my relatives are Woyane members and I asked them how can that be possible? They told me either you are woyane member or supporter or you have no right to exist. They also said we want to raise our Kids and servive. አዎ መለስ የ ህዝቡን አስገድዶ እየደፈረ ነው but for how long????

People are fooled by the name EPRDF. EPRDF is a smoke screen coined by the Zenawi and his shabia masters to fool the public. Take a look at some of these organisations that make up the so called EPRDF. ANDM is one of them. this puppet organisation set up meles is led by Bereket Simeon and is supposed to be an Amhara only ethnic group. OPDM is another ethnic based group made up of individuals hand picked by Meles and set up to represent the Oromo. TPLF was formed by Shabia and those currently within TPLF are HARD LINE shabias agents Both these groups and many others like them set up in the name Somalis, Sidamas, Guraghies, Gambellans, Afar etc are nothing but instruments used to carry out crimes of zenawi on the people. Zenawi the main man of Shabia is the one who cracks the whip.

we, ethiopian are doing great here at home. We heard that people live in western countries are busy. you guys are living out of your country. you need to work hard either gaining education or collecting money. you did not left our country to make us free. we are free people. What happen when you get there? you do not supposed to be live by welfare? My suggestion is make free your self from welfare and wasting a lot of time talking for nothing in washington streets.
