Our future whom I always want call Our OBAMA, Dr. Beresh well done. what Ethiopians need is more information about the struggle we all stands for. Well written and presented book like this is simply an equivalent to the 10 years of gorella fight of thuggish woyannes in Bush.

I think Ethiopians in general, as a culture, are not resolute people. They are a people who are suggestible and swayable by counter values to those they hold dear, if infact there is any value they hold dear. Most values they hold seem to be copnsequent upopn group domination and influence. If a group can dominate the air and prints, that group makes the values of the Ethiopian political culture.
For example, EPRDF dominated arguments for peaceful change of government while it killed, maimed, imprisoned and confiscated private properties of opposition leaders and their supporters. Academics, journalists and leaders of the opposition camp are still sold onto EPRDF’s peaceful change and shattered initiative for a coup de etat from within the Ethiopian army.
Examples can be taken from recent history, too. Haile Sellasie ruled with iron fist and spoiled himsself as King of Kings, the Elect of God, the Descendant of Solomon, and the Lion of Juda for 43 years. The world wondered how an unimpressive dwarf was able to honor himself with such contemptous titles without the will of the people. Obviously, he was in a land where people are cowed by values of respect for the king thrown into them as improver of Ethiopia. In 43 years of his rule as an absolute king, there were only two coups de etats. One by General mengistu Neway and the last one by Mengistu Hailemariam. If Ethiopia was a country that has freedom and honor of the people as a non-negotiable constant value of culture, there would have been a 1000 coups in 43 years.

Above, my reference to culture was the culture that after the formation of present Ethiopia Menelik II. The Amara culture to be exact. Or, you can call it the culture of authority and submission. The Amara lived through centuries obeying submissively to the authority of the church which again served ruthless kings or messafints who assumed political power after years of shiftannet or banditry. Imposed undebated laws and regulations, inluding taxation. If you want to still go back in history to trace the submissive culture of Amara and Tigray, you can recal the foreign domionation of these pristine African societies of the north. Sabeans, perhaps beginning from the 4th century BC, crossed the Red Sea and settled in northern Ethiopia. They had a writing system, higher technologies of economy such as agriculture, stone carving, mud wall houses, water usage techniques by dams, reservoirs and channels, carpentry, and technologies of war such as spears, knifes and daggers, by iron smelting making. To say northern Ethiopians were dominated by sabeans is being kind, on my part to the plight of the unsuspecting innocent Africans who were linguistically and culturally annihilated forever after their lands were occupied by a powerful alien nation. Submissiveness and obedience to authrity of the Amara and Tigray may have roots in the way their cultures have been formed by successive, unending ruthless powers that ruled them mercilessly, beginning from the Sabeans.
But, south Ethiopians such as Gurage, Oromo, Hadiyya, however, lived a far richer life of freedom. Kings were largely ceremonial and and laws were made a gathering of a tribe after fierce debates. They did not collect taxes. Respect for the kings were shown by voluntary donations, especially when the king was asked to adjudicate difficult cases.

As I have just bought the book and started reading, It won’t be fair have a an over all comment. However, I want to say that what Ginbot 7 has done is so great. It is great because making one’s Philosophy, mission, strategy and methods of implementation is part of an important process in the struggle against tyranny.I found the excerpt from the book very challenging and powerful if we are truly honest to ourselves. Yes, we need to be able and willing to stop pretending that we are doing so is great .
How many of us, and how many times should we die not as the result of lack of resources or lack of the courage to work hard but because of severe lack of good governance? For how long and to what extent should we tolerate those tyrannical regimes who are determined to rule by terrorizing the people? For how long the people should go hungry and be humiliated ? These and other countless questions came to my mind when I read the excerpt from the book. And that is why I said the expression is so powerful. Some of my fellow Ethiopians might try to argue that” if you are serious enough what you are talking about, Why not you go to battle field and …. ” There is nothing wrong with this argument. What would be wrong is when we are not courageous enough to pay the minimum sacrifice before we talk about huge or ultimate sacrifices. These sacrifice starts with minimum sacrifices such as coming together around common issues, minimizing the unnecessary/disintegrating/ destabilizing attitudes and supporting individuals or groups who are trying their best to save the country and the generation before they fall apart. Do we participate in events and activities organized to show our sincere solidarity with the struggle going on in our country? Do we pay minimum financial sacrifices in supporting those political opposition parties, human rights activists, media and etc… who are making their own efforts to end the untold suffering of the Ethiopian people? Are we active enough to follow up what is happening in our country? The questions goes on and on. What I wanted to stress is that if we are not able and willing to pay the minimum sacrifice, I do not think we have any moral high ground to talk about the ultimate sacrifices( languishing in prisons, being tortured and to the extent of being killed). I think the central message of the excerpt is nothing but the quest for determination to fight for our own freedom. I believe the book will contribute to the making of powerful public awareness.
Great job !!

anga007:
Your theory lays flat when we ready “the actualy history of Ethiopia” in which Tigrayans used to sell their own kind into slavery via Massawa and many of the Southern people were enslaved by muslim traders who sold them as slaves via Moqadisho and Massawa. One of the most notorious enslavers and slave trader was the King of Kaffa. Generations of Oromos were obliterated by this one authority for centuries.

If you really have a concern for Ethiopia, go inside Ethiopia and do the fighting than writing your thesis every now and then. You live a comfortable life abroad and still want a poor farmer’s child to die for you to come to power the easy way. My appreciation is to the likes of Birtukan who have decided to give their, body, blood and soul for the benefit of others. Even the EPRP resistors sacrificed in a broad daylight in many places in Ethiopia fighting the Dergue, however, the smart ones have always taken the lables of opposition and eluded the sacrifice!!

Where is Ginbot 7? Can anyone tell me? I am not trying to be funny here. I am aware of Ginbot7’s website address. The leadership is going around the world giving speeches. Woyane demonizes them every chance it gets. And now Ginbot7 even wrote a book in the shortest span of their existence!
The question is what have they done lately in the fight against Woyane? We keep hearing Andinet this, Medrek that but never Ginbot7. Reporting news, events and writing analyses is not good enough. At the early days of the group’s formation, Ginbot7 set the bar so high–we thought(figured) Woyane’s days were numbered. It wasn’t meant to be. Rumor has it,Ginbot7 underestimated Woyane’s spy network and exposed some of its people. Be that as it may, what Ethiopia needs now is an organization with a vision like Ginbot7.
We are not asking much from Ginbot7 other than to keep the fire burning. It is time to hit the ball out of the park,if you know what i mean. Make life uncomfortable to Woyane. Strive to achieve more. The status quo is not acceptable. No organization knows the inner workings of Woyane better than Ginbot7. Why not shake and rattle Woyane at their own game? Bottom line–we need action on the ground ASAP.
If Ginbot7 is a sleeping giant–as some people contend–waiting to unleash its anger with a couple of MAY surprises–it would a surprise worth waiting.(i can see Woyane losing sleep with this information). A friend of mine told me what we are witnessing now is the calm before the storm. I hope Ginbot7is cooking some kind of storm!!

you mean ethiopia will only be considered a democratic country when things are suitable for berhanu and co. to rob the poor through their ‘ayer bayer’ business.

Setit Humera,
Firstly, try to understand what you read. Then, avoid making statements you can’t prove such as south was raided by Arab enslavers. But, I can prove that Menelik II sold individuals from SW Ethiopia for arms and I can prove the Mahdists of Sudan captured thousands of Amaras when they defeated Yohannes and entered northwest Ethiopia.
I am surprised to find you a good example of an Ethiopian who is easily suggestible and obedient to authority. For example, you knowledge of south Ethiopia doesn’t include Oromo though it’s part of south Ethiopia. Your knowledge of south Ethiopia is Southwest Ethiopia though i’s not strictly in south Ethiopia. You’re the Ethiopian I was refering to in my above thesis: an Ethiopian whose values are fluid, temporary and submissively obedient. No knowledge is truth, no virtue is constant. Black can be understood to be red, white can be understood to be yellow. It’s all a matter of what a dominant group wishes the people to believe in.
In my theory above, I was trying to explain why we fail to take prompt and resolute action when our natural freedoms to speak, to organize, to elect whom we choose are sdenied. Especially, when we are killed, maimed, imprisoned and expropriated. Why are we not sensitive to freedom? Why can’t we dare the oppressor? Why can’t we take decisive action? Why can’t we plot to topple oppressive governments as quickly as they come or many times during its rule?
If you have explanation why tyrants, despots, dictatators and oppressors rule Ethiopia for too long, I would welcome your theory.
