Geneva events highlight human rights violations in Ethiopia

geneva_demoPress Release, 11 December 2009 — The Ethiopian Association in Switzerland (AES) and Association for Justice and Accountability in Ethiopia (AJAE) have staged a demonstration and held a candle light vigil in Geneva.

The rally was held in connection with the UN Human Rights Commission’s Universal Periodic Review on December 9 of the TPLF regime’s appalling human rights records.

International human rights organizations, Ethiopian human rights activists, including members of the Ethiopian Association in Switzerland, had previously composed well-documented records of human rights abuses in Ethiopia and heavily lobbied member governments and proved to them thousands of extra judicial executions and murders, torture, disappearances, mass detentions, mass starvation, rape, etc committed by the officials of the regime and their cohorts.

The hard work paid off soon and during the review, countries after countries took turns to condemn the horrendous and gross violations of human rights perpetrated by the Meles regime for the last 19 years and asked the regime to respect the right of Ethiopians as per the international standards that it has signed.

AES and AJAE representatives took part in the UPR review on December 9, and met the officials of the UN human rights commission the next day, and discussed in detail:

  • the unlawful and arbitrary detention of Birtukan Mideksa and many more Ethiopians,
  • the deteriorating human right situation,
  • the issue surrounding the forthcoming election ,
  • the looming catastrophic famine that is already unfolding in Ethiopia etc.

The commission said it has confirmed the situation in Ethiopia was alarming and would keep an eye on it. The activists also staged demonstrations whose missions were:

  • To condemn the TPLF regime
  • To call for the unconditional release of Judge Birtukan Mideksa and all other political prisoners
  • To call for the respect of human and democratic rights in Ethiopia
  • To call for an end to tyranny.

AES and AJAE on this occasion would like to thank all those who showed concern over the dismal human rights situation in Ethiopia and those who took part in the demonstrations.

We shall keep the fight until democracy, justice, freedom and human rights prevail in Ethiopia.

    1. Peace Says:

So the overall effect is reducing some Ethiopians from going to the Copenhagen demonstration. Such kind of demonnstration are undertaken many times in the past, it would have been better if the energy was divertedt to the Copenhagen event.

“We shall keep the fight until democracy, justice, freedom and human rights prevail in Ethiopia”. The question to be answered is how? Four years went by before Ethiopians agree to unite over the common goals with strategies to achieve those goals for Unity, Territorial Integrity, Sovereignity of Ethiopia and Ethiopians.

As you all know the politics and the economic and political crises to all these anomalies stated above is three fold. The first basic element is that current regime rules under a policy of separate but equal nine ethnic groups, with little considerations for the rest 71 ethnic goups, divide and rule policy, with ethnic and seccessionist rights of ethnic dictatorship. The second element is human rights violations, ranging from obliterating those Ethiopians, especially the Amhara ethnic group, which stood up against the regime for its policy of disintegration of Ethiopia, and those parties that uphold/sustain the current regime as regards the platform of ethnic agenda/platform, endowed to them by the current regime vis avis the liberatin movements, which is one of the main objectives of these parties, respect of for ethnic rights and seccessionist right by the later. This attributes divides Ethiopians and the politicians into positive forces of integration and negative forces of disintegration, a negative calculs od diminishing return.

The second element, which is the basic denominator for all factions is human rights violations on Ethiopians from all factions and /or ethnic groups only God knows which ethnic group took the biggest blow. It might be revealed in the proceedings at ICC.

The third element is what contributed to the political and economic strangle hold of the country and the silent majority of Ethiopians by TPLF and TPLF affiliatd enterprises. This stems from lack od democratic system of governance of independent branches of the government of an ethnic based one party system of ethnic prolitariat, which has the atribute of ethnic dictatorship with eprdf as the cover for the donor countries consumption, nevertheless benefiting its elites and others from its ethnic group to the exclusion of all other groups except the loyalist cadres from those ethnic groups. This set up of governance, together with its security apparatus, the Agazi special forces, the military and the police forces set up to uphold the system of government that prevailed in Ethiopia for the last 18 years, including the lack of private property ownership has stifled growth, distribution and accumulation of wealth and freedom of Ethiopians to settle anywhere in Ethiopia to own, develop, and prosper.

Any party, that misses out on one or two of the above elements does not fit/meet the goals of the positive forces of integration for Unity, Territorial Integrity, Sovereignty of Ethiopia and Ethiopians, irregardles of the fact they consider themselves as democratic movements, as long as they poised to ethnic and/or to seccessionist rights, rather than individual rights/freedom.
