Oromo American Council Endorses March to Stop Genocide

Written on Monday, August 31st, 2009 at 3:05 am by ethioforum

Press release - August 30, 2009 - We, the Oromo American Citizen Council, (OACC) fully endorse the upcoming “March to Stop Genocide and Dictatorship in Ethiopia/Africa in Washington D.C., scheduled for September 13, 2009 in front of the United States Capitol.

The OACC is Human Rights Organization based in Minnesota and founded in 2002 whose mission is to educate and motivate Oromo Americans and others to participate in the social and political processes locally and nationally and to work to prevent violations of fundamental civil and political rights in Ethiopia and around the world.

We in the Oromo American Citizen Council are writing this letter to declare that we are joining our sisters and brothers of Ethiopia in the March to be held on September 13, 2009 to Stop Genocide and Dictatorship in Ethiopia/Africa and call upon all Oromo sisters and brothers, who live in Washington DC area to join this Historical march.

The OACC strongly encourage all members and partner organizations to fully participate, as able, in this coalition of like-minded groups who are seeking human rights, democracy, the rule of law, peace, unity and economic prosperity in Ethiopia and in Africa.

The “March to Stop Genocide and Dictatorship in Ethiopia/Africa;” is an event that could exert much pressure to change foreign policies towards Ethiopia and Africa so that free countries stopped supporting dictators and perpetrators of genocide and other crimes against humanity; positively altering the future of our country and of our continent.

This is a significant opportunity in the history of this struggle and the OACC will not be a bystander. Our shared goals with the objectives of this march demand our full participation. We have no excuses for the people back home, who will continue to live under tyranny, misery and hardship, if we who live in freedom, refuse to come together due to differences of ethnicity, regionalism, politics, religion, turf issues or other such differences.

For those who want to know more about the OACC and our work, please contact us or see our website http://www.oromoamerican.org/

This is a very crucial stand in the struggle for freedom and democracy. It is high time to let the world know what is going on in Ethiopia. The developed world seems to be indifferent to the political crisis in Ethiopia. Therefore, a big effort is required to show our determination for freedom and democracy, and to show the gravity of human rights violation in Ethiopia.

    2. embi Says:

very good brothers and sisters of our Oromo Ethiopians. This will shake Woyane as little Woyane wants to keep us divided. Now, it the time to come, to martch and stand together to be the voice of our entire Ethiopian people. I am sure we will have beautiful Ethiopia with an equal opportunity of every thing in the land. Welcome OACC. This will be the nightmare for woyane(the ethnic aparthide and greedy and lemang Tegere).

    3. beenyaa Says:

Thank you OACC! Yes, we must and shall stand together on democracy rule of law and human rights irrespective of our differences. This sends millions of shocks to those who do not want to see peace and respect for all human kind.

Every human soul will bless your deeds, esp those of you, who have decided to take this bold step in order to address a century-old problem of our society in Ethiopia. Hopefully, we shall reach our common goal only if we understand the nature of humanity, rule of law and democratice exercise of our society without any interference from without! Let’s think of the BIG PICTURE - Live together without imposing any difficulty on any of our fellow brothers and sisters in Ethiopia.

      God Bless You All!

    4. Aba Jaffar Aba Gobbu Says:

This is a vital important and a Good Start. Oromos and others must work together with all Ethiopians as a nation. This is only the means of survival of Ethiopians and Ethiopia. Ethnich division helps only the enemy of all Ethiopians. Specially Oromos should not be fooled by foreign enemies. Oromos are Ethiopians nothing more or less. What is needed is democracy and the rule of law.

      Ethiopia prevails.

    5. Daandii Qajeelaa Says:

I am an Oromo and if I were living in DC, I would come and denounce this fasciest regime of Meles Zenawi. However, I won’t carry that bandira; instead I would be wearing my T-shirt (or kofiya) with Oromian (OLF) flag on it. Or I would carry the OLF flag instead. Just as I don’t have any problem with those who carry the Minilik’s-Ethiopian flag (or Meles’s-Ethiopian flag), you Habeshas, should be ok of me (or other Oromo brothers and sisters) holding which ever flag I (we) carry. This is one small piece of what “self-determination” is all about.

Personally, I don’t live in DC, so I won’t show up any way. But I fully support the March if it is only about “STOPPING GENOCIDE”, and no other agenda or slogan which I/we oppose is mixed with it, such as “opposing self-determination” or “needing unconditional unity”.

    6. BABILE Says:

    7. jj Says:

      Daandii Qajeelaa
Just come and show up Brother. We have a lot in common and less differences that will be even undermined if we come together and start to talk, hear out each others pain and find common ground. Come as a human, as a person holding what ever you believe in. I personally will stretch out my arms and accept you with a big hug.

    8. Ogina Says:

I do also endorse this march of Amharas, Oromos and others together. But we should think about the strategic marching together for centuries to come, not only for one day! Which can be our common denominator for that? Self-determination or unconditional unity? Enjoy it here:

Reviving AFD (Alliance for Freedom and Democracy)!

To get rid of the TPLF regime, there is no other way as an alternate to the reorganization of AFD! Now it seems there is a hint to do it. As I heared from an interview given by Ob Daud Ibsa in VOA Afaan Oromo programme, certain liberation fronts are working together as an alliance: OLF, ONLF, SLF, BPLM and GPLM. It is a good restart. Such an alliance is the only way forward. MEDREK aka Forum for Democratic Dialog, FDD, at home and TIBIBIR aka AFD in diaspora including the cooperation as well coordination of these two alliances is the best method to get rid of the dictatorial regime!!

    9. Tenkir Says:

Reading some of the comments here, it is easy to see woyanes PDOs are busy at work this political season :) They wish all of us nuke each other with self-determination vs. unity contentions so you know they can keep running their multi-billion business.

    10. Observer Says:

I will see this as an opportunity or as a good begining for our nation to be united under the umberalla of freedom, justice and democracy regardless of who we are and what we are. It will carry a message for the Woyanes and its “buchiloch” that we won’t be separated forever, It will come a day that we speak all languages of ethiopia together and preach the sprit of brotherhood in that soil. It will come a day that we stop to say “They sing a song of freedom, justic and democracy in Ethiopia” instead We should sing it together breath it together and finally we shout we acheived it together.

The woyane regime will not see Ethiopia divided as they wished it to be. We will continue fighting hand to hand till its last breath….

    11. GETACHEW REDA Says:

      From GETACHEW REDA-;
It is all good. But, while condemning the TPLF crime, you also need to condemn the crime of the secessionist OLF that committed atrocities against innocent Amhara Ethiopian peasants. The horrendous massacres, burning and looting, deportation, public floggings, atrocities and genocide perpetrated by separatists who claim they are not Ethiopians, extremist Islamic sectors, OPDO, OLF TPLF is well documented. The OLF leaders who did such horrendous Human Crime are living with you where you claimed based. You all need to ask for their deportation out of America and Europe and send to prison instead of flirting with such bloody criminals. That what serious business mean when you engage working for their deportation I will trust you after that. Therefore, we have to be clear when we condemn Human Rights abuse perpetrated by TPLF, you also need to condemned and held OLF accountable for its despicable barbaric acts in this 21sT century. We only come to believe you when you condemned OLF as well for the atrocities still waiting to be taken to the justice when the world becomes well learned and civilized what Human Right meant. Liberation Front (secessionists) leaders need to be out of the politics for a while than to seek a hide for their crime. They can buy time, but they can’t hide for ever in the name of Liberation Fronts. I am sure those who care about Human Rights should not oppose the demand OLF to be charged and condemned for its crime. You can’t free one while condemned and hold accountable only TPLF. Good Luck! Daandii Qajeelaa:
Please be positive - Assume there are million of Oromo’s who are sick & tired of such divisive opinion. I too am an Oromo born in Amara-Soma (now Tajo) near Tulu-Wolell. Brother, don’t be negatively opinionated. Oromo’s knew what good more than you & I. For example, I visited my birth place a couple months ago after 29 years and found out that from Ambo - to- Nekemte-Gimbi-to-Dambi-to-fincho to my destination Amara Soma, and saw the same feeling in everyone. They are starving, mutilated and humiliated by woyane cadres. That is also true in my trip to Adama- Asebe-Dere-Harar- Awasa, Asela, Bahar Dar and so on. Everyone faces the same issue; everyone wanted to be librated from Woyanne. BTW, looking at this people, and talking to local, they have common issue and common problem than who hold and what flag. lets work together and elevate the concerns that Oromo’s other in Ethiopia faces.

    13. Afandi A. Says:

we are side by side wether we indorse UNITY or SELF-DETERMINATION.
It is time for all of us to focus on WOYANES. 2 decades of continous crimes must end now. LETS PUT OUR DIFFERENCES A SIDE AND WORK FOR THE SAKE OF OUR PEOPLE.

    14. Robele Ababya Says:

    18. Daandii Qajeelaa Says:

      Dagafa,

What is wrong with you buddy? All I said was “I should not be vilified by anyone on the demonestration because I cary an OLF flag or wear an OLF T-shirt or hat”, just as I don’t vilify those who cary the Ethiopian flag. Is this not fair? Is this “being negative” to you? Please be reasonable and understanding. Do you want me to drop all my beliefs overnight? What the Oromo people feel and think remains to be seen, you are just reflecting your own perception.

      Aite Getachew Reda,
I am sure you are now in a night mare! Amharas and Oromos are uniting against your Weyane. Just kill your self!

      Aite Robele,
I know what you want, but your accepting of the march of Amharas and Oromos together at the moment is commendable. Register in your nifxaam mind, that no lasting solution can happen till nations have their self-determination. OLF is so smart, it now just gives the alliance the chance to be materalized, but be sure it never compromises on the right of Oromos to self-determination. Now enjoy your music!!!

    25. Daandii Qajeelaa Says:

      Ageren,

I understand why “Oromo Americans” looks funny to you. But, believe me OACC exists and fully operational with hundreds of members, for many years now, whether you like it or not. What matters is whether Oromos want it or not, not yours. Hold your emotion, it is real.

20 years ago, the name “Oromia” (given by OLF by the way) was funny or “Qijet” to use your own words. It is not funny any more! It is real! That is a result of struggle. Whether there will be a country called “Oromia” or whether it is “qijet” of some crazy “dreamers” is to be seen in the future. Hold your laugh, be patient, wait and see. By the way, why didn’t you say anything about Wayyaanees? Or, are you…….?
      Just wondering.

I don’t have any problem of you claiming to be an Oromo, who is “prouding as an Ethiopian”, but what the heck is “Oromo People Nation” my dear? kkkkkkk.

The OACC may want to consider this in their plans to move forward. Also, I am a DC resident and I just heard about this march… where is the PR and the advanced notice? I would have attended, but now I am committed to working at the health care rally.

    38. Macaa Says:

Members of Oromo American Citizen Council (OACC),

As a member of Oromo nation I appreciate your mature and far-sited noble decision to join peaceful struggle of Ethiopian people for justice, peace, democracy, human rights, and development. This type of cooperation has the potential to bring to an end the suffering of all Ethiopian people. But for those selfish organizations and individuals who committed in formulation of false propagandas to kill the cooperation between peoples my message is short and clear: Do not waste your energy on negative interference to unfairly reject the natural identification (language, culture, and history) of Oromo or misinterpreting the legitimate and sovereign cause of Oromo people for which they have been paid expensive prices since the end of 19th century.

Be wise to cooperate with Oromo organizations.
Good job, Keep it up OACC!
      Macaa
