There Should Be No Election In Ethiopia

Written on Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 at 2:25 am by ethioforum

Joe Michael – The planned 2010 Ethiopian general election has been primed to be won by the TPLF and its faithful servants that are crowned in the name of EPRDF. Apparently, it is not going to be through an election that will be based on the rule of law, but through repression and deception.

The main opposition leader has been unlawfully incarcerated and her political party’s offices throughout the country have been closed. Her supporters are getting abused and facing uncountable intimidation. Other opposition candidates are also banned from campaigning and assembling. The only political parties that are allowed to assemble and campaign are TPLF/EPRDF and a confused loyal opposition led by the opportunist Ledetu Ayalew. The rest of the Ethiopian people have been deprived of their constitutional rights. They have been told not to assemble or protest against the TPLF/EPRDF offensive actions by no means, even through legal demonstrations.

It is pretty much clear that TPLF/EPRDF will race the election by itself and will blatantly claim a victory. The bottom line is, since the prediction is a fact that TPLF/EPRDF made it self the only contestant and winner of the upcoming election, then why does Ethiopia need to hold an election? Why does it has to throw away money or waste time for a phony election?

As far as the international community, there is no need to try to impress them through a one party election. They are all aware of the truth. You can’t run an election by yourself and claim that you have won. Even if you want to impress outsiders with a bogus democracy you still have to have an opponent on the ballot box. You can’t keep your oppositions in jail and call it an election.

As far as the fake oppositions like Ledetu Ayalew, he was just one unemployed Ethiopian who wanted to take advantage of the political opportunity. He has no effect on the democracy process than taking care of himself. If he gets a job opportunity overseas like the Aiga Forum boys, I bet he will never return back to the country.

Let the real opposition leader be freed now, or let there be no phony election.

The ethnic supremacists and fascists led by Meles Zenawi do not allow fair and free elections and accept the verdict of the people. The Tigrayan racists are organizing elections for the political consumpton of their donors and to legitimize their ethnofascistic rule in the country. This being the fact, there are persons like ato Bulcha Demekssa, professors Beyene Petros and Merera Gudian, who are serving as actors and promoters the image of the ethnofascist and Tigrayan supremacist, Meles Zenawi. By doing so, they have only brought shame and disgrace to themselves. Meles Zenawi is treating them like his house servants and
ridiculing them in his rubber stamp ethnic parliament. These guys should stop taking part in the farce elections of the ethnic supremacists and join the struggle. We should move on with Ginbot7 and free ourselves from the bondages of ethnofascism.

No election needed that is true…why do anybody need it if there are no contestants and if there is no will to have contestants. The article is telling us a truth…we have been conquered and broken completely and no body need expensive lies. We are beaten and now they want to spare us from the silly joke called election. We do not need election now, what we need is
fierce struggle. Find what you as a person from where you are can do to help stop the death of your nation.

Who is this foreigner talking about Ethiopia and Ethiopians ?

    14. aha! Says:

What is this writer talking about? “There should be no election in Ethiopia”. Which one of the prvailing oppostion parties are the main opposition parties vis avis many of them are considered moderates/loyalist oppostion in terms of their stand/resistance to TPLF/eprdf regime. The main opposition he is talking about, UDJP is a dissident of Kinjit out of which Ginbot 7 was created. UDJP members at least in the Diaspora were last discussing intensely whether to participate in the 2010 election or not. AEUP is holding on to the point of preconditions before election as way, I think to restore these conditions/democratic institutions for far fair and free election to take palce. UEDF in their last conference, I believe are held up between UDJP and AEUP as regards to the 7-point preconditions, in that as I understood, they want to use participating in the election as form of struggle, while I suspect urging for fair and free election, I presume.

Is the authors demand for”There should be no election in Ethiopia”, an advice, an order to to the opposition parties. If I take the liberty to modify his topic sentence/tiltle to read, There should not be any participation in 2010 election, unless the 7-point conditions are met or Ms. Birtukan is released from prison. The loyalist opposition parties, now have been participating in every 5-year term election since 1993, and Tigrai harena are in its new format, Medrek will not back down from participating in the elction. A dissident of Kinjit EDP is on free ride to participate in the election in the same wame as the loyalist opposition parties and Tigrai Harena with in the confines of TPLF/eprdf political frame work, not the preconditions demanded by AEUP. What is this obsession of yours about a personality, rather a party’s platform, and obssession with UDJP.

The EPLF also opposed the TPLF manifesto for independence on the grounds that Tigrai was an inegral part of Ethiopia and there was no justification for secession from Ethiopia. At this time, the EPLF was reluctant to support separatist movements in Ethiopia, not just as a matter of princople but for various other
