July 8 (Reuters) - Ethiopia’s long-serving Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said on Wednesday he was looking forward to relaxing after a retirement from power that he hopes will be agreed soon with his ruling party. [ID:nL821621]

So who might replace him? Following are the three names most widely touted, and a summary of main opposition figures:

SEYOUM MESFIN

Physicist Seyoum has been Ethiopia’s foreign minister since Meles came to power in 1991. Fiercely loyal to the prime minister, he used his weight as a well-regarded former rebel fighter to help Meles purge their Tigryan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) of dissidents in 2001.

Respected for his skill as an international negotiator, he is considered a contender by the Addis Ababa diplomatic community.

GIRMA BIRRU

Trade Minister Girma may prove the perfect compromise candidate. Despite making up only 6 percent of the population, the Tigryan ethnic group, of which Meles is a member, dominate Ethiopia’s political establishment.

The Amhara ethnic group have traditionally ruled the country and are likely to lobby for one of their ruling party members to take over should Meles resign.

Girma is an Oromo — an ethnic group which, though Ethiopia’s largest in number, have never held power.

TEWODROS ADHANOM

Educated in Britain, Tewodros has been health minister since 2005 and has a string of achievements under his belt — including a significant reduction in Ethiopia’s child mortality rate — that have won him international respect.

The opposition is unlikely to win elections due for 2010. Its leaders were jailed after Meles blamed them for street violence after a disputed 2005 poll and they have made little impact since their release in a 2007 pardon deal.

They say that is because of government harassment but Meles denies that. Some of their key figures are:

BIRTUKAN MIDEKSA

The charismatic former judge leads the Unity for Democracy and Justice party. She was imprisoned in December after the government said she violated the terms of the 2007 pardon. Meles says there is no chance she will be freed before the 2010 poll.

SEYE ABRAHA

Once nicknamed the “TPLF’s Strongman”, Seye was defence minister from 1991 to 1995. He fell out with Meles in 2000 and was jailed for corruption. He insists his imprisonment was politically motivated. Recently released, he is involved in a coalition of opposition groups going up against the government in 2010.

BERHANU NEGA

Berhanu is an economist who was elected mayor of Addis Ababa in the 2005 election then jailed shortly after. He fled to the United States after his release where he formed “May 15th”, an organisation named after the date of that poll. The government says Berhanu planned a recent plot to overthrow it and has charged 32 men it says were receiving money from him to buy weapons and bombs. He says the accusations are fabricated. 1. Fatima Aliye Says:

Adverently or inadverently, reuters is becoming the mouthpiece and propaganda vehicle of the ethnofascistic regime in Ethiopia. Fair and
free elections can never be held in Ethiopia under ethnofascism and the outcomes of the farce elections to be held in 2010 are already known. The ethnofascists will as usual claim landslide victory and allocate some seats to the so called loyal opposition as favours or rewards for taking part in the sham elections. The ethnofascists use the fake or loyal opposition as the cover for legitimacy and ensuring western aid and support. The ethnofascist Meles Zenawi offers some petty benefits and crumbs to the loyal opposition to ensure their continued company and presence in his periodical charades. The Derge or military regime can not be characcterised as an Amhara ethnic rule to justify the current apartheid, discriminating, marginalizing and racist rule of ethnofascism. We have now a purely ethnofascistic and ethnic based dictatorship favouring its own region in all ways, staffing the top and key civilian, military and security positions with members of its own ethnic group.
Any propaganda the ethnofascists cook up and forein news agencies like Reuters spread around can not blur or change this hard fact on the ground in the country.

    2. Berhane Girmay Says:

Meles Zenawi is a clever ethnofascist capable of controlling and manipulating the whole power apparatus of ethnofascism in Ethiopia. Direcltly or indirectly, he will continue to control and direct this apparatus
and his repeated talks of resigning are meant to gaugage the feeling and mood of mainly his western financiers and backers. But still he seems to have succeeded in drawing the genuine Ethiopians into this futile discussion of his possible resign. Many Ethiopians are discussing and wasting their energies and times on issues he produces to deflect and divert attention from the serious crisis in the country. The ethnofascist has only one exit plan and that is to run away to any safe haven where he has stashed money upon loss of political power. Until then he will continue to misrule Ethiopia directly or indirectly. His big business empire involved in corrupt and unfair business practices in Ethiopia can not thrive without him around wielding political power in the country. To the dismay of many naive Ethiopians and their politicians, the ethnofascist
Meles Zenawi is determined to remian at the zenith of power as long as he can.

    3. tesfa new Says:

Is Reuters on payroll of TPLF? They have become the propaganda tool of the racist regime in Aart Kilo. Fair and free election can never be held in Ethiopia while they (the TPLF mafia gangs) are in power. For them, the idea of relinquishing power is unthinkable, as they have been amassing wealth and resources at the expensive of impoverishing Ethiopians. For the whole of the existence of their ethnic based political organization, all they have been doing is mercilessly killing, creating havoc and mayhem and torturing their perceived enemies, thus creating numerous enemies all the way along . So for them the idea of giving up power even to their own ones is a frighting prospect. So Reuter, forget about the 2010 election, the result of which is forgone conclusion and known to all Ethiopia. Everyone in Ethiopia can fairly accurately predict how the process and the result of the forth coming election will be. Why do you waste your time on this nonsense and stop insulting our intelligence.

    4. gurmu Says:

      EMF,
how can you call a college dropout like seyoum mesfim a Physicist?? I am almost to boycott this website!
why you fantacisze about such things? Dont you know there is no free and fair elections in ethiopia?
Afterall, If there were free election, I have no doubt that Hailu Shawel (AEUP) will come out as a winner.

    5. Ermias Tumebo Says:

It is easy to have many of the western media publish any of the stinking propaganda stuff of the ethnofascists through paying them handsomely.
It is more or less like businesses or companies paying them to adevertise their products and promote their markets. There is no wonder if the ethnofascists who spend millions of dollars on very expensive western lobbyists, buy the services of the Economist and Reuters to paint rosy pictures and sell ethnofascim in the west. Many of the western diplomats are doing the same thing as well. The business tycoon and partner of the ethnofascists Sheik Alamoudi pays for the luxurious holidays of the western diplomats. The whole purpose of this corruption is to prevent the western diplomats from speaking about the heinous crimes and gross human rights violations the ethnofascist regime is committing in Ethiopia.
These bribed and morally decadent diplomats also send the wrong and da
maging feedbacks to their respective governments to enable the ethnofascistic regime to continue to receive aid. For example the country representative of the World Bank in Ethiopia is known to be part of this mafia network of promoting the image of the ethnofascistic regime.
That is why the World Bank and the International Moentary Fund (IMF) publish the fallacious and ficticious growth figures cooked up by the ethnofascist regime. However, the grinding poverty and expanding and increasing famine in the country are exposing the dishonesty and lies of the World Bank and IMF. Generally the west, their media and financial institutions are becoming the partners of the ethnofascist Meles Zenawi and echoing his lies and stinking propaganda.

    9. Buba Says:

This is as bad as it gets! EMF, do you really know what to report and what not to. We are on a hard battle with TPLF and you line up their mouthpieces on your page and give us a headache that won’t go for weeks. What a shame? Who cares who takes power as long as TPLF is in charge? You absloutely know that Dr. Berhnau and Midekessa are out and the battle is internal battle. Why glorify a battle that does not serve our interest. Why do you pick every garbage that reuter throws at us? When do you mature and be a journalist that helps the struggle? Who told you that Mesfin is a Physicist? A Physicist ???? Isn’t he a person who doesn’t know how to solve differencial equation? Do you knwo that Ethiopia doesn’t have 5 Physicists inside Ethiopia? You don’t become a Physicist just because you have a BS in Physics! Your job must should have been to take the story of reuter and make a good story out of it that puts some energy in the oppsotion. but you did the oppsotiem, you took a garbage and made it a worse garbage! SHAME ON YOU!

    10. Fikre Says:

Why do you publish this non sense? It helps only the meles regime by giving the impression that there is some how a democratic system in Ethiopia.

Reuters was one of the independent news outlets. As the writer of the above article noted, Reuters is slowly taking the path of the BBC, which has by now is irrelevant for Ethiopians.

Ethiopians used to talk about BBC news years back when BBC was seen as an independent news agency. Unfortunatly BBC almost stopped any kind of negative report about the dectator Meles Zenaw and now is seen as dead by many Ethiopians. No one talks about BBC anymore.

If Reuters want to follow the path of BBC and create a totally false epression of Ethiopia as if there is some how democracy in the country, then let them do that. But they will just be seen as another mouthpiece of the hated dictatorial regime and be dumped by Ethiopians as BBC to join the irrelevant news outlets.

What BBC and Reuters should understand is that the Ethiopian people have had enough of the daily lies and propaganda which come form the state monopoly media. So, they don’t need another government controlled media by the west. BBC and Reuters must understand that the no one in Ethiopia listens to the government propaganda and lies other then the western news agencies.

BBC and Reuters should learn from VOA and Deutsche Welle to reach millions of Ethiopians not only in urban areas but also in rural Ethiopia and in the diaspora. VOA and Deutsche Welle are loved by millions in Ethiopia because the people believer that they are unbiased and independent.

We have heard 18 years of lies and false propaganda about democracy bla bla from the Meles regime. We don’t want to hear this non sense from Reuters also.

    15. Aden1 Says:

      TEASING BOX: Meles and Reuters

Why is Reuters narrowing it to EPRDF and currently “lame duck” opposition politicians Bertuka and Berhanu? That makes Seye the key player. The report is also more inclined on the effectiveness of the mentioned three in the INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS (true! A great asset and should be so), but does not include other parties and names that represent Ethiopians at large.

The fact that MEDREK had been formed is good news (at least for now), but that is not a political party, and Seye as independent may not be able to win.

    16. aha! Says:

This report by reuters the old paradgime articulated by by foreign powers of the succession to the throne by different ethnic groups particularly Oromo. This secenario had the appearance when TPLF along with OLF took power and formed an ethnic and secessionist ferederalist constitution, which changed the political landscape of ruling ethiopia as one country , one flag, and one language.

The problem that is infesting and living the country in turmoil and conflicts among ethnic groups and the the disintegration of Ethiopia is the ethnic and seccesionist ploicy and the the agenda maintained by loyalist opposition party leaders as opposed to the hardliners. The leaders listed by the author may be boxed into the TPLF/eprdf (Seye, Seyum Mesfin), Dr. Berhanu Nega Ginbot 7 assisted with EPLF/Eritrea, seemingly for freedom of Ethiopians and unity of Ethiopia, Dr. Teodros Adhanom? unknown quantity, although his last name sounds right, Girma Biru has no political party to advance and Birtukan Mideksa, a split of Kinijit has boxed herself along with loyalist opposition parties and Tgrai Harena of Gebru Asrat into Medrek with ethnic-based agenda, as an alter ego to TPLF.

The quagmire of of the Ethiopian politics is between those with ethnic agenda to those with national agenda of freedom of all Ethiopians as opposed to ethnic right and representing an ethnic group, than Ethiopia.

After the 2005 election, Ethiopians are inclined to choose a party with national agenda than ethnic agenda, given freedom of all sorts to the individuals. None of the above candidates meet the criteria for the old form of transition of power from one locality to the other or the restoration of the unity of Ethiopia and freedom of all Ethiopians except perhaps to serve as alter ego with TPLF intact.

This another diversionary politics to divert the focus from the current secenario of disintegration of and lack of freedom of Ethiopians to competition for power among the major ethnic groups. It lacks a grasp of the intricay of Ethiopian politics or reviving the scramble for political dominance by ethnic groups, which does not serve the 70 other ethnic groups. The current struggle by the current political models is ethnic fedralism and seccessionism, which is a process of disintegration and freedom of all Ethiopians.

Nor is there a tangible evidence of attaining freedom of Ethiopians by armed struggle by Dr. Berhanu from the base in Eritrea, instead of from within Ethiopia to supplement the peaceful struggle and serve as a standing army to maintain peace during a transitional period.

    17. biniam Says:

      ’05 brought justice to defend,
      Close and near both joined.

Overlap of freedom and new world opened,
It was time to break the bread.
Invited to the banquet in ‘07and ’08,
      Together again meant to meet.
      Common experience formed stings attached,
      Lessons made the vision connected.

So soon gone to take the place,
      That misery of the dungeon,
One is locked and the other freed,
Other Ethiopia’s stars revolve far and near.

May the iron gate open and truth be freed,
Close again, but with no victims inside.
A round of freedom in a revolving door,
Again, destiny might have the answer,
For thefuture of Ethio-earth and fire.

There is one strong soldier of Meles that the Reuters and the crowd are overlooking in the commentary. How about Desalegn Hailemariam, the thug who instituted his own form of minority hegemony in debub. He is from wolayta and he masterminded the his own form minority ethinofacsism in south wherein wolaytas controlled everything and massacred the majority Sidamas. Doesn’t this resemble what Meles did at the federal level? Meles will prefer no one but a person well equipped with the techniques of ethinofacsism ideology and practice. He will surprise you once again. None in the list of reuters fits well satisfy meles’ interest — only Desalegn is closer.

Addendum: The move of Ginbot 7 with EX-EPLF/Eritrea is akin to the move of EPRP and TPLF with EPLF and in that mis a move of OLF with EPLF. At the end of the day, TPLF and OLF and others took control of the central government as provisional govenmnet, which concoted a constitution of ethnic and secessionist ferderal structure with the support of some of the current loyalist opposition leaders.

EPLF declared cessation from Ethiopia following the fall of dergue regime, whose main agenda was oppression of the the ethnicities/nationalities, and EPRP whose main objectives was a calss struggle for the farmers and the workers in factories and industries fell on the way side with having served as debilitating effectively the Dergue regime from within and exposing the Dergue regime to the vultures and being hit itself from TPLF and the Degue regime. It was not strong enough to fight the Dergue regime with its dissident group moving with the Dergue, nor was it strong enough militarily to fend off the the TPLF and EPRP that moved in with TPLF. Yet the remaing vestige of EPRP posed a strong resistence to TPLF/eprdf, forming one of the hardliners.

It also failed to take advantage of the turning point in the reform approach of the Emperor Haile Sellassie’s agreement to a constitutional Monarchy. This turning point may have set up a path to democratic revolution without rocking the boat. These are the conjectures, which I dervied in retrospect, reading into several opinions in the past 4 years.

Instead of complaining about this article, once again the diaspora has failed in showing the true colors of TPLF and Meles to the West. Instead, TPLF and Weyane have more power on the West and can manipulate pretending there is open election and true democracy. Still we fail to show TPLF and Weyane as ethnocentric party that is ruling Ethiopia to the West.

    41. Gemechu Says:

Seye Abraha is the best option. He has experience and he is an Ethiopian patriot. We know he had made mistakes like that of accepting the question of Eritrea as being a colonial question or for denying the problem of Eritrea to be absolutely an internal problem of Ethiopia. Seye Abraha might change his position for a better Ethiopia and might able to do what it takes to get our ports back.

Seye Abra, Birtukan Midkessa should be elected by the people of Ethiopia. Meles Zenawi should be forced to resign. Berhanu Nega is the Trojan horse for Shaebya. No body should allow Berhanu Nega and co to join ethiopian politics. Berhanu Nega is worse than Meles Zenawi. Meles Made his mistakes because he was inexperienced. But Berhanu Nega after seeing all that how Eritrea seceded from Ethiopia and after all the cimes Shaebya committed on Ethiopia, he dedclared himself to collaborate with eritrea. Berhanu Nega is the wors enemy Ethiopia has seen or is still to see. Berhanu Nega has contributed to weaken the democratic movement. He should be avoided.

The other candidates like Seyoum Mesfin, Girma Birru etc are criminals and have to locked in.

    42. lemma Says:

      You wrote…”GIRMA BIRRU

Trade Minister Girma may prove the perfect compromise candidate. Despite making up only 6 percent of the population, the Tigryan ethnic group, of which Meles is a member, dominate Ethiopia’s political establishment.

The Amhara ethnic group have traditionally ruled the country and are likely to lobby for one of their ruling party members to take over should Meles resign.

Girma is an Oromo — an ethnic group which, though Ethiopia’s largest in number, have never held power.”….The facts are here in order: The Ethiopian lingua franca remains to this day Amharic. This would mean that before the TPLF and even during the Derg those linguistic/cultural groups that don’t speak Amharic and felt discriminated by the state sought representation. The latter entailed the creation of EPLF, TPLF and OLF and others. The Haile Seliassie autocracy failed to see the danger and the Derg reverted in centralism hoping to smash nationalist sentiments. Despite these sentiments the ruling elite the formed past governments of Ethiopia came from all the regions Shewa as from from the beginning of the 19th century having major representation. Shew, where 1/5th of the Ethiopian population resides is a melting pot of linguistic groups. In fact Haile Silassie’s genology was much of Ormomo than Amhara and Mengistu’s father is from Reppi (an ormos).
To write that the Amharas traditionally ruled Ethiopia is a subtle expression of Amhra hatred in the struggle to take over power. Sadly this wrong depiction of facts lessens also the contribution of the other linguistic groups to the Ethiopian state. The past Ethiopian governments might be criticised for their shortcoming. However, there are also achievements they scored. The younger generation must read and should not make up any stand by such cheap sensation piece that has essentially a political goal.

    43. dasha Says:

I think Lidetu should be included as a contender. He is one of the few principled opposition members. Remove berhanu from the list, since he has not done anythhing notable. He is also not principled in any way. All he has been doing is hide himself behind other people and sniff for opennings to jump to power.

    44. Biri Says:

Why waste time promoting the tyrant’s publicity as Meles will never resign and it won’t make any difference any way?
Nothing short of an all-inclusive national reconciliation and a total reversal of Mles Zenawi promoted TPLF’s policy could/would save the tyrant and his repressive regime. This radical shift would not happen by a peaceful means.

The sufferings of Birtukan demonstrate that the TPLF regime has neither the vision nor the wisdom to do what is right.
Hence, it plays drama by announcing artificially created news like the one here.
It is sad we have become the medium for the repressive regime’s attention seeking and diversionary propaganda.
The reality is that this regime is the source of deprivation as President Barack Obama has beautifully summarised it in the broader African context:

      - The likes of Ato Lidetu(Wedo geba) serves as window dressing in the parliament
      - Election board and its partisanship role
      - TPLF’s direct control/interferance in Judical ….
      - TPLF’s strong hold on the milititary and key posts( lack of impartiality)
      - Web of operassion structure laid down from cosmopolitan cities to “Arso ader mender” and the role of Cadres
-lack of access to media and its partisanship

I can go on forever by talking trancparency, accuntablity and the likes, I prefere to refrain myself as it is a well known and documented fact.

To conclude what I’ve started, the change of a single person, such as Melese, wouldn’t change a THING!!!!

For me to choose Birtukan or arrogant Birhanu or the lame Hailu as a leader of a poverty stricken nation in which there are a clear threat of wars in Ogaden region , and in which there is a possible outbreak of war in the northern border of ethiopia, where the only military leaders and cadres are from the ruling party WOYANE, it is a suicide mission for any person who is participating in KINIGIT party leadership .
My fellow citizens don’t be fooled by naming KINIGIT members as a possible candidate brings stability and political calmness to ethiopia, it is already decided that the Fox Meles is the president ,and the handy picked man by Meles is Ethiopian new prime minister.

    54. Shingela Says:

It is funny to talk about this .The Ethiopian people are fighting for democracy and good governance not hand picked Prime Minister. Any way for fun we can discuss some of the TPLf gangue members:

Seyoum Mesfin : He is the first Person on the planet to cling on to power as Foreign Minister for 19 years. He has been planted in that position by his party for reason. He is well known for dipping his hands in corruption and nepotism. Since he ascend to power he by all means tried to hire and assign TPLF members or people from his tribe as diplomats just to enable them to amass foreign currency .One can prove this by comparing the number of TPLF members hired and assigned to foreign posts to that of the other ethnic groups particularly to that of Oromos.

Above all he is incompetent as he is responsible for the death of tens of thousands of poor Ethiopians in the senseless Ethio-Eritrea war. Before weighing the pros and cons of going to war he and his colleagues from TPLF urged the government to go to war. Against the advise and uproar of Ethiopian opposition groups he and his vice minister raced to accept the so called Algiers Agreement. In the negotiation with the Ethio- Eritrea Boundry Commission he and his cabinet made blunder and gambled as they raced again to accept the decisions of the Boundary Commission that gave Badime to Eritrea. What a waste!!!!! The minister then lied about the content of the decision and tried to fool the people!!!

I don’t think the Ethiopian people want to gamble by allowing such people to be at the helm of power!!!!

      Birtukan:

She is the most charismatic leader for her party. I admire her for the courage she showed in the fight for democracy and rule of law. She sacrificed her golden years for the people and is still suffering for our cause. But I don’t believe she has the experience and capability to be leader at this complex situation. In the future by acquiring the necessary experience and knowledge I have no doubt she will be a great leader. I would like to take this opportunity to tell her that our hearts are bleeding for her!!!!!

      Girma Biru:

Why he bowed to TPLF while he says that he represents the largest ethnic group –the Oromo!!! I urge him to be a man of courage– the people will vote for him .Before that no vote of the people Stop Korejo Zerefa!!

      Birhanu Nega:
      I will vote for him.

      Tewodros Adhano :

Nobody knows him except his party leaders. Ha ha ha our western Diplomats are giving us more people from TPLF!!

Western Diplomats !!!! Just wine and dine with Seyoum and Al Amoudi but don’t be king makers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    55. Tagel Says:

All of these are unfit for command ! If anyone expect any of these guys to be the next leader-confuser please you need to review some profiles of the group called woyane and shaebeia. We need our country in which every citizen is being treated by dignity and have absolutely equal right without taking his ethnic background into consideration.

    56. Abel Says:

The EPLF also opposed the TPLF manifesto for independence on the grounds that Tigrai was an inegral part of Ethiopia and there was no justification for secession from Ethiopia. At this time, the EPLF was reluctant to support separatist movements in Ethiopia, not just as a matter of princople but for various other motives as well… [more excerpts will be posted later
