EMF - [Click to enlarge image] A new book telling the stories of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (1975-1991) has been launched by Tsehai Publishers & Distributors.
Its author, Aregawi Berhe, PhD is one of the founders of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the revolutionary movement that overthrew and replaced the military dictatorship in Ethiopia. Aregawi had served the peasant-based guerilla movement as a Commander until he was forced into exile.
The book gives a comprehensive insight of Revolt, Ideology, and Mobilization in Ethiopia. It is a critical study that seamlessly integrates the theoretical issues of ethnic self-determination with real life events, processes and firsthand account of the complex history of the TPLF.
The book discusses, among other things, the question of ethnicity and the conflicting interpretations of ethnic self-determination, the issues raised by the competing and overlapping claims of the various liberation movements; the tension between a radical elite ideology and the beliefs and expectations of the peasantry; the political mobilization of the peasantry and the creation of a peasant army; the relevance of the Marxist notion of the universality of class-struggle in the context of ethnically-oriented politics; the TPLF’s transformation from a regional ethnic movement to a political party that spearheads a pan-Ethiopian coalition of ethnic liberation movements (The Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front); and its transition from a guerilla movement to a political party that governs Ethiopia—the second most populous country in Africa.
Aregawi Berhe has recently received his doctorate in Social Studies from the Vrije University in Amsterdam.

The TPLF is an ethno-fascistic organization created and led by the anti-Ethiopia elements and forces in order to weaken and undermine the proud and oldest black country in the world. The emergence of fascism in Ethiopia is an alarming development because it has the potential of spreading to other African countries with the consequences of destabilizing the continent. Ethnofascism has taken Ethiopia aback by centuries and wrecking havoc in the country. The ethnofascistic regime of Meles Zenawi is repressing the peopels of the country and causing ethnic conflicts and cleansings. The apartheid like ethnofascistic rule is preventing the citizens from investing, living and working outside their desginated ethnic regions. The Tigres are the only favoured people in the country who are allowed to live and work in the places of their choice, enjoying unlimited access to power and the resources of the country. Inspite of the billions of western dollars pumped into it, the ethnofascist regime is transforming Ethiopia into a failed state. Grinding poverty and famine are the order of the day in the country though the ethnofascists are trying to hide these tragic developments behind their shoddy high rise building.
These are just few of the legacies of the ethnofascist organization, the TPLF as far as Ethiopia is concerned. However, the ethnofascists are transferring almost all of the country`s resources to build and develop their ethnic region at the expense of the country.

The formation of the TPLF has marked the growth of Tigrayan nationalism into ethnofascism. Ethnofascism is the culmination of Tigrayan nationalism the latter emanating from backwardness and sheer poverty which prevailed in the region. Tigrayan nationalism is based on the myth of the once great and sovereign Tigray which was destroyed by the Amhara kings. All the misery and poverty in Tigray including the degradation and depletion of its soil are blamed on the Amhara rulers.
The poverty of Tigray in natural resources has nothing to do with the Amhara rulers or their oppression. However, the ethnofascists have used this problem to mobilize the the peasantry and achieve their goals of subjugating Ethiopians to their severe discrimination, exploitation and racism. The ethnofascists have also instilled their ideology of Tigrayan supremacy in the Tigrayan population especially the youth so as to make them loyal and use them against Ethiopians and the country`s national interests. That is why Ethiopians are increasingly coming to the conclusion that most Tigrayans will not accept to live in equality and harmony with other Ethiopians. The ethnofascist and racist Tigrayan elite are to bear all the blames for all the grave situation in the country.

I cannot comment about the book. i haven’t read it yet but i know Aregawi Berhe. He is an anti Ethiopian ethinic oriented guy- not better than Meles may be even worth. as a commander of TPLF army he used ethiopian soldjers to be aimed at for the training of tigrean army ( we are taking about prisoners of war (POW;s). he says to them after confiscating their weapons, you are free to go home and then he gave orders to his soldjers to shoot at them from the back. There are eye witness in Holland who can confirm that story. Now we see him hier and their with different political parties as if he is concerned about Ethiopia. Aregawi you are cheeting your self. We know you!!!

The fascistic nature and objectives of the TPLF have been very clear to many Ethiopians as they are experiencing them in their harsh daily lives. The TPLF leaders themselves have not been hiding their ethno-fasctic and racist motioves and are practising them openly. For example in one Tigrayan youth meeting a couple of years ago in Makelle, the TPLF leaders were indoctrinating their youth with their ideology of Tigrayan uniqueness, superiortiy in all aspects and the inferiority of other Ethiopians. The TPLF leaders and cadres also tell the Tigrayans that all other nations, nationalities and peoples with the exception of the Amharas have accepted the Tigrayan superiority or supremacy. They told the Tigrayan youth that that is why all the other opposition parties except the Amhara one Kinijit, accepted the votes they got in the 2005 elections and joined the parliament. As expected the Amhara party kinijit tried to cause trouble and failed. It means the leaders of the TPLF are considering the Beyenes, Bulchas and Mereras as the leaders of parties who have accepted the Tigrayan supremacy and hegemony and are working as surrogates of ethnofascism. The TPLF leaders and followers consider Kinijit as the party of Amharas which challeneged the Tigrayan supremacy by refusing to join the TPLF parliament without any preconditions. In fact, Kinijit stood for the democratic aspirations of all Ethiopians and took the right decision in challenging the Ethnofascists who have rigged the elections and stolen votes. According to the ethnofascists Meles Zenawi and Sebhat Nega, the Amharas are naturally anti and envious of the great and superior people of Tigray. We find the spirit of Kinijit`s rise and struggle alive in Ginbot7.
Ethiopians should Join Ginbot7 and increase the momentum of the struggle against ethnofascism in Ethiopia.

We are living all the evils of TPLF. I think we don’t need anybody to tell us whatsoever story on birth, development, and ideology of this ethno-centric machinery. Mr. Aregawi, it is nice it helped you for your academic status (if it is your doctoral study). I am afraid, however, that it is not a right choice for the public. Maybe yyou have to wait a generation to come.

I do appreciate the effort made by Dr. Aregawi Berhie to write about the political history of the TPLF!!!!. I wish him in the future , Dr. Aregawi Berhie will take take his valuable time to write other books on issues concerning Ethiopiawinet & dedicate his talent & energy defending Ethiopia like his grandfathers (Emperor Yohhanes & Ras Alula, Basha Awualom etc etc of great Ethiopians of Tigray orgin). Tesfaye Gebre ab and now Aregawi Berhe are now to entice and entertain the oblivious and confused Diaspora with their narrative and anecdotes about TPLF, to preoccupy the public with nonsensical true confessions. “Jib kehede wisha chohe” type of story telling. The damage has been done. Now there is time only for reparation and restitution after the dismantling of the current regime and its newly formed political parities with ethnic agenda.

PS! Ethiopians should know about the history of the First Woyane and TPLF, not to support TPLF but to kill and uproot it once and for all. It is true the FIRST WOYANE was an inspiration to many ethiopian revolutionaries and nationalist. The FIRST WOYANE was a power struggle between Emperor Haile Selassie and the descendants of Emperor Yohannes. Haile Selassie failed to industrialize and modernize Ethiopia, we all condemned Haile Selassie and his regime. Finally Emperor Haile Selassie was overthrown and disrepectfully burried.
The Neway Brothers were inspired by The First Woyane Revolt in Tigray, which happened in 1936. The First Woyane Revolt was suppressed by Haile Selassie with the help of Royal British Air Force, which bombarded the rebells and the population at the central market in Mekelle.
The Tigray people should again stand up to take control of their fate. Meles Zenawi and his henchmen should be brought to justice. The people of Tigray are not fools to be cheated by Meles Zenawi and co. the day will come when Meles Zenawi and co. will have to answer for the crimes they have committed. Meles Zenawi and co. land-locked Tigray and Ethiopia. Massaw belongs to Tigray, not to Afar or to Hammssen or to Libya or to Egypt. Assab belongs to the people of Afar and Wollo etc.the people of Tigray should tak e the historical responsibility of liberating Tigray from Banda Meles Zenawi and co.

It is too late to turn back the oppositions’ movement. For sure your writing would help after Weyanne is overthrown. In my opinion, Weyanne can be the part of the solution if it vacates its currents position and genuinely participates with the rest of Ethiopians by admiting all crimes commited against Ethiopia that brought us all to the condition where we are today. All the miseries and hate politics have been propagated for the last 18 years by weyanne. It seems there is no way out except face the reality to be judged by the people of Ethiopia. Ginbot7 has already started action and we see weyanne is apparently shaken. This time is not to read the perportedly accademical research paper. Don’t waste your time guys. Join the movement and shake.

Dr. Aregawi’s book is a version of his dissertation and should be a critical addition to other important works that deal with the vexing questions of insurgency and war in Ethiopia such as Gebru Tareke’s latest “The Ethiopian Revolution: War in the Horn of Africa”. The fact that Dr. Aregawi is the only one of two TPLF leaders (the other being Legesse “Meles” Zenawi) to write about the internal politics of the TPLF is itself worthy of attention. Aside from revealing, albeit from a partisan, some aspects of the TPLF and its impact on the shape of Ethiopian politics and resistance to the military Derge regime the enduring value of the book may rest in the depth of its criticisms and alternatives to the problems of forming a democratic, plural and prosperous Ethiopian nation-state.
I respectfully disagree with vitriolic condemnations of Dr. Aregawi’s book on the basis of disgust with the TPLF/EPRDF rule in Ethiopia. Political discourse and political action for meaningful progressive democratic change can only come about when we as Ethiopians engage in discussions that are guided by openness to ideas, willingness to self-criticism and critical reflection on competing narratives of our past. To close off reading, thinking, and dialogue for the purposes of informed political engagement on the basis of personal denigration, unfair politicization of intellectual work and on an exaggerated sense of necessity for immediate action for regime change at all costs, in my humble opinion, narrows the chances for an enduring solution to Ethiopia’s problems. There are no magic bullets and no absolute truths for solving Ethiopia’s problems – that is a lesson that our most recent history teaches us. Dr. Aregawi’s book, as controversial as it may be, may help in sparking a much needed healthy dialogue.

Could somebody write about the “eritrean” secessionist movements and the question of “Eritrea” as seen from the perspective of Black History. African History should not be seen as the history of European Colonialism. The fact that “Eritrea” was brutally occupied and subjugated by Italy does not make the eritrean question colonial. We are all Ethiopians and should live under one democratic government. “Eritreans” should not believe the fake history the sell-out eritrean elites are propogating.
TPLF and EPLF have done a lot of destructive politics. We have to reverse it. Meles and Issays should be brought to justice. DR. Aregawi Berhe has failed in condemning the secesssion of Eritre. We hope we hear from about the illegal and reactionary indepedence of “Eritrea” from Ethiopia. The secession of “Eritrea” benefits only the Arab League and some neocolonial regimes in Europe and USA.
Ethiopia patriots should expose the sinster plans of neocolonialist powers to dismember Ethiopia. I am not expansionist or Neftigna. I am interest only to build a strong Ethiopia based on her past glory. Egypt has already understood the potenial of Ethiopia becoming a dominating power if Ethiopia is unied and democratic. The europeans also fear Ethiopia. We really have to do soul searching and come with a better solution. All the armed struggle of Eritrea and tigray was wrong. The armed struggle should have been to liberate Ethiopia and build a united strong democratic based on the Axumite tradition.
It is in our interest to create a united Ethiopia. Eritrean should revrse the secession. We have to bring Meles and Isssays to justice. Sooner or later Ethiopia will reclaim the Red Sea. Ethiopia has the power and the means to do it. We have really to discuss beforehand to limit any collateral damage. Thank you! Bye!

Thank you Dr. Aregawi Berhe. Reading critical book is just another way of analyzing issues objectively. If most opposition politicians and writers had read the really history of TPLF, they would have been doing much great things. But most of them are ignorant like TPLF, so Ethiopia is paying a huge price like losing access to the sea, land to The Sudan and well educated Ethiopians. Don’t forget that there are many X-TPLF out there hiding with shame for what has come TPLF.
