EMF (2 July 2009) Gun men have arrested today the editor-in-chief of the weekly Awramba Times, Fitsum Mamo (on the picture) and its senior reporter Elias Gebru in connection with extensive news coverage on Tuesday’s edition about Ginbot 7 suspect, sources said.
Five days ago, Judge Assefa Abraha, the central judge who handles the case of Ginbot 7 suspects, has seriously warned the editor Elias Gebru. “Your coverage is aimed at diverting the situation and misguide the court.” The judge told Elias.
“The arrest is a direct interpretation of this warning.” the managing editor said.
Awramba time doesn’t know the whereabouts and conditions of its Journalists, our source said.
According to Committee to Protect Journalists, the Newyork based media watchdog, Ethiopian authorities routinely use police detentions, threats, legal, and administrative restraints to stop the handful of independently owned media outlets from covering sensitive topics. The struggle is moving ahead and gaining ground and that is why the dogs of ethnofascism, the fake named Dilwenberu and Co. are barking.

The long term interests of the people of Tigray lie in living with harmony and equality within democratic, free and united Ethiopia. Once again, Ginbot7 is telling the Tigrayan elites to pose a moment and begin thinking with their brain, not with their bellies as their ethnic leader wants them to. I think it is better to know the right cause than just bark like dog hearing just sounds. As a lawyer and student of political science, the Eth. gov. who signed many treaties regarding so many issues doesn’t take to jail any one with out any fundamental violation of law. We know many of our journalists, including some of our websites are publicizing so many things which are baseless, and without source. Thus I agree with those who say, let’s wait and see the truth. Journalism is loyalty to the truth, never takes side, no partiality. To the contrary ours are divided as “tekewami & mengist degafi” which shouldn’t be like this.

I guess we just have wait and see why the editor is arrested. Crime can be made with papers. He is not immune in the face of law. If there is enough evidence, let the government come up with it. The law of the land must be respected and its not a no-man’s land. We should not let the fate of this people be in the hands of illiterate and irresponsible ‘jouranalists’. If Ginbot 7 is the alleged terrorist group, any sympathizer is equally responsible including journalists.

It is not the time to cry for us, but the time to build Eth., not by creating small partitions, nor insulting the government. Let us contribute to our families and fellow citizens who are dying of hunger our worst enemy. Forget about the damn said G-7 who pledge war which we are bitter of, or the divided opposition. Some of our friends in USA, and Scandinavian countries have been too much cheated by contributing money for he treachery G-7, while their fellow citizens at home need schools, roads, books, potable water. Let us prioritize our needs. I was at one of G-7 meeting, I felt vomiting by the speach of the founder.
