LONDON, 23 June 2009 (AFP) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has had “enough” after 18 years in power and would be willing to leave office to make way for a new generation, he said in an interview.
“My personal position is that I have had enough,” he told the Financial Times.
The newspaper reported that he had not given a deadline for his departure, but said discussions on when and how he would leave had started within the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).
“I am arguing my case and the others are also arguing their case,” he said.
“I hope we will come up with some common understanding on the way forward that would not require me to resign from my party that I have fought for all my life.”
Meles, a former Marxist rebel leader, has been in power since the 1991 overthrow of dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam. He was returned to power in 2005 in a controversial parliamentary election victory by his coalition.
He told the FT that his party now needed leadership that had not been part of the armed struggle for power.
“We are not talking about Meles only. We are talking about the old generation. The party needs to have new leadership that does not have the experience of the armed struggle,” he said.

Why should we care weather he steps down or not? What difference does it make if the PM is Meles, Tewodros, Girma Biru or Addisu Legesse? Zemedochie, why do we forget all these guys are Woyanes? አገር ወዳድ(Ager wedad) በሚል ቅጽል የሚጽፉት ግለሰብ! በፋሽስት ወያኔ ጦር መሳሪያ በየአውራጎዳናው በየገጠሩና በየከተማው የተገደሉት አባቶች እናቶች እህቶችና አሁንም በየቦታው በየእስር ቤቱ የሚሰቃዩትና በሚስጥር እየተገደሉ ያሉት ወገኖች አያሳዝኖትም ወይ?
ሌላው ጥያቄ:- ወያኔ በምርጫ መሸነፉን ያምናል ብለው ይጠብቃሉ? የግንቦት7 የአንድነት የነጻነትና የዲሞክራሲ ንቅናቄ አላማ:- የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ ስብአዊ(የሰውነት) መብቱን የሃገሩ ሉአላዊነትና በአጠቃላይ በዜግነት መብቱ ማግኘት የሚገባውን የሁሉም ዜጎች በእኩልነትና በነጻነት ኢትዮጵያ ሃገሬ ብሎ የሚኖርባት ሃገር እንድትሆን የፋሽስት ዘረኛ ወያኔ ቡድን በምርጫ ስልጣንን ለህዝብ አላስረክብም በጠመንጃ እገዛለሁ ብሎ በየጊዜው አሸባሪ አዋጅ(ህግ) እያወጣ ህዝባችንን እየገደለ እያሰረና እያስፈራራ ባለበት ወቅት: በማንኛውም የትግል ስልት ወያኔን ካስወገደ በኋላ የኢትዮጵያ መንግስት ሆኖ ሃገራችንን የሚመራው መንግስት በህዝብ ተመርጦ እንዲሰራ መንገዱን ለአንድነት ለነጻነትና ለዲሞክራሲ የሚያመቻች የመላው ኢትዮጵያውያን ብሔረሰብ ልጆች ንቅናቄ እንጂ እርስዎ እንደሚያስቡት እንደወያኔ በዘረኝነት ቡድን(ትግሬ) በጠመንጃ አሸንፌያለሁና እኔ መምራት አለብኝ ብሎ የሚያስብና የዘረኞች ስብስብ አይደለም:: የግንቦት7 የአንድነት የነጻነትና የዲሞክራሲ ንቅናቄን አላማ የግንቦት7 ዌብሳይት ላይ በአማርኛም ሆነ በእንግሊዝኛ በግልጽ ቋንቋ ተጽፎ ይገኛል:: የወያኔ ሆዳም ተለጣፊ አባሎች የሚያስወሩትን የሚያዘናጋ አረፍተነገር ከመስማት በራስ ጭንቅላት ማገናዘብን የመሰለ ነገር የለምና Hager wedad ነኝ የሚሉት ግለሰብ ደጋግመው ያስቡ: የግንቦት7 ንቅናቄ አባላት በማንኛውም ቦታና በመላው ኢትዮጵያ ነው ያሉትና የሚታገሉትና: ህዝባችን በንቅናቄው ድልን ለኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ ሲያስረክብ ምነው እኔም ለሃገሬ አንድ ነገር ባደረግሁ ኖሮ ብለው ከሚቆጩና ስህተት ወሬ ከሚጽፉ አሁንም ያስቡበት እላለሁ::
