EMF(15 May 2009) Meles Zenawi ‘s regime is becoming more and more surveillance state as it is tapping and intercepting the phone calls of thousands of citizens without any warrant every day, telecom employee said.
Ms. Hanna Merga, former telecommunications corporation employee told the OLF news service that, not only police and security services, the TPLF authorities also gave direct order to the telecommunications corporation’s employees to record the telephone conversation of anybody they want.
Interception of private mails, emails and phone on suspected addresses of opposition members is not a new phenomenon in Ethiopia, where telephone and internet services are under ruling-party monopoly. The regime has also blocked access to all pro-democracy websites by security agents with the help of Chinese experts.
The job seems now done openly by telephone operators, as the the TPLF is short of security agents to tap thousands of conversations a day.
Ms. Hanna Merga, who now escaped to a neighboring country, had worked at several capacities as operator and later as a manager of operators in the Govt’ controlled Ethiopian Telecom corporation.
She said the operators were ordered to tape conversations of suspected opposition members including suspects of the OLF and CUD party. Government employees; esp., teachers, agricultural sector and lawyers are also most targeted.
Almost two decades in power and unwilling to leave power, such act of Meles Zenawi is certainly to crack down on everybody who may be considered to be a dissent.
Human rights groups say this act is a direct violation of Artcle 12 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human rights, Article 17 of the 1966 International Covenant on Civil and Political rights and Article 8 of the 1950 Convention for the protection of Human Rights and fundamental Freedoms.

The Chines,south korea,Argetina,Brazile,India,South Africa what do all these countries have in common ? all these countries do not cowtow or follow WESTERN/American style politics, but in the mean time they are the fastest growing economies of the world, their GDP annual growing faster than America`s economy and Europe economy. Second thing it was not only woyane who should be blamed for the killing of civilans during the election.
Do u remember what Hailu Shawal said? He said by lossing around 10,000 people we will control the govenment. But when asked on BBC hardtalk why did not he struggle while he was with Derg he said he had had children whom he care for them at that time. So that is ur leader whom u r proud of and that is ur leader whom he wants to lose the life of 10,000 people but he never wants to lose even a single person of his family.
I donot agree in any case the lose of the people during the election; It was a bad action taken by the governement. They could have controlled in another way.

The opposition can not afford to wage its war against Woyane with an old-school mindset anymore. Woyane is equipped with Chinese assisted technical know-how to bug offices, cell phones, and computers of the opposition. This technical expertise is tilted in favor of Woyane leaving the opposition disadvantaged. Every sound and discussion in the opposition camp are recorded by Woyane intelligence unit and passed over to pro-government newspapers who love to publish it ASAP. There are paid under cover Woyane operatives masquerading as opposition members and leaders feeding woyane in formations that potentially jeopardize the lives of true sons and daughters of Ethiopia. Every move of the opposition members including those residing outside of Ethiopia are under the radar of woyane and its accomplices.
What can be done to counter this problem? What the opposition must do is invest a little bit of money for the purchase of detection devices. Bug detection or debugging devices are easy to obtain nowadays. I recommend the counter surveillance probe/monitor. It is ” a broad receiver designed to detect and locate all major types of electronic surveillance devices including room, phone, body bugs, video transmitters, and tape records.
With all these counter measures available, there is no reason why we remain “sitting ducks” to woyane gestapo unit. Let’s take the struggle up a notch. Remember! Woyane’s rag tag army marched to the cities with little or no education at all dressed up with hand me downs and flip-flops. It is not like they have a magic wand. By going high-tech we can minimize the damage caused by woyane and its Chinese masters. It is again the woyane desperate move to control Ethiopian ppls. This wire tapping has been taking place in ethiopia since Hilesselasie and Derg however it has some due process and needs high level approval or in side way the court approval too. When woyane entered addis ababa if you remembered called all the derg security members after about a week to report other wise they will be deemed outlaws. All members from head of a department and above arrested and sent to “Sendafa police collage” and later to Holota military training comp i believe for about 2 years and above those who are willing or intimidated came back and join this brute woyane regim. While those who were not arrested because of the nature of their work especially the technical group who were trained in different part of the world like Russia, Israel, west Germany, Czechoslovakia who were looking over the eves dropping network (”operative technique “) forced to train the woyane communication personnel who were at that time grade 7 the highest education registered among them. Then woyane have tested the sweetness of intelligence profession but immediately they have started to abuse it in unacceptable level even by the standard of the intelligence society. They started to use it on each other and even spying on their own wife and girlfriends. Most intelligence professionals challenged them but they face brute reaction and either they fled or detained. Please don’t compare TPLF’s regime with Bush’s Admin.They are not even close. The TPLF people do what ever it takes to keep their position but the US or other developed country did every possible things to protect their people & their country.
