U.S. Wrong to Endorse Ethiopia’s Elections – Freedom House (+ Sherman’s comment video)

Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Wendy Sherman

Washington – April 16, 2015 (Freedom House )

In response to today’s comments by Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Wendy Sherman, in which she referred to Ethiopia as a democracy and the country’s upcoming elections free, fair, and credible, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“Under Secretary Sherman’s comments today were woefully ignorant and counter-productive,” said Daniel Calingaert, executive vice president of Freedom House. “Ethiopia remains one of the most undemocratic countries in Africa. By calling these elections credible, Sherman has tacitly endorsed the Ethiopian government’s complete disregard for the democratic rights of its citizens. This will only bolster the government’s confidence to continue its crackdown on dissenting voices.”

Since coming into power in the early 1990s, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) has dominated politics through a combination of political cooptation and harassment. The country experienced a degree of democratization through the early 2000’s, culminating in the most competitive elections in the county’s history in 2005. Since these elections, the EPRDF has restricted political pluralism and used draconian legislation to crack down on the political opposition, civil society organizations, and independent media. In the 2010, EPRDF and its allies won 546 out of 547 parliamentary seats.

Ethiopia is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2015, Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2014, and Not Free in Freedom on the Net 2014.

Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization that supports democratic change, monitors the status of freedom around the world, and advocates for democracy and human rights.

The US has supported the TPLF since day one. What is new? As to the opposition it has not shown any alternative, but weakness and fragmented parties.
I think that the ball is in our court, it is time to stop playing around with small groups with hardly any constituency and left overs of defunct political cliques and create a genuine national patriotic movement. Playing politics is over and finished, it is time to put up or shut up!!

Amazing observation! The US state department clearly show Ethiopia as a country where people cannot change their government by the ballot box. No insane US official would say that Ethiopia is a democracy Yes, she must have a good night.

I am sure John Kerry would scold her when she returns to the US

Oh Ethiopians we came to this! What an insult she is warning us if we dare speak against the facist tribalist government we will be in trouble. What a threat and what a shame.

The bottom line is it is the people of Ethiopia who decide their destiny I can assure her that sooner or later Ethiopians will get rid this criminal and oppresive regime.

    Long live Ethiopia!!!

Here you go!This is how the US starts messing up with the lifes of people in other countries. And then through time, endless conflicts, meaningless negotiations, and even tactical overthrowals of leaders will all flow from its( the US) side in the victim nation. The worst is when the US starts to say ‘now it is up to you’. It is unfortunate that the US does not seem to understand what is already happening in many stateless countries is directly or indirectly because of its actions- the problem of understanding what is going in the air and not on the ground.
