Fresh violence has erupted in Ethiopia’s north Gondar zone in the Amhara Regional State that has claimed the lives of dozens and wounded many others.

Chief Administrator of the regional state Gedu Andargachew said, adding however that the security problem has been brought under control.

The Chief Administrator said the state deeply regretted the loss of life and damage to property caused by the instability which occurred in some kebeles (districts) in Metema and Chilga woredas of the zone.

“Following the joint efforts of the security forces and the community, the situation is now under control,” Gedu said.

The Chief Administrator commended the role of the public in the efforts to bring the situation under control.

He said the government will take necessary measures on the “anti-peace forces” who he said attempted to disrupt the peace, urging the residents to also help to safeguard the peace in the region as usual.
