Former Ethiopian Prime Minster Tesfaye Dinka died on 7 December 2016 at his home in Fairfax, VA. He was 77.

With an MSc degree in engineering from Syracuse University in the US, and an undergraduate degree from the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, Tesfaye was one of the highly educated officials of the military government.

Tesfaye Dinka served as foreign minister between 1989 and 1991 before assuming the premiership for nearly 3 months until the Derg was toppled in 1991.

In the dying years of the Derg regime, Tesfaye was a leader of the Ethiopian delegation to the US-brokered London Conference which paved the way for the transfer of power to Tigrian rebels in Ethiopia and Eritrean rebels in Asmara.

Tesfaye made a brief impression at the UN Security Council by drawing a parallel between Italy’s invasion of Ethiopia in the ’30s with the invasion of Kuwait by its largest and heavily militarized neighbor, Iraq.

Via Tesfaye, the Ethiopian government unequivocally condemned the invasion of Kuwait and voted along those who condemned Iraq.

Tesfaye is survived by his wife and three children.
