The Associated Press – Tuesday, May 20, 2008 -ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia: A witness and a government official say a minibus exploded in the Ethiopian capital Tuesday evening, injuring several people.
The witness, who said he was walking near the area, said he saw four people who had been killed. But a spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Ministry said he could not confirm that.
“I know there was some explosion … and there were several people injured,” said foreign affairs ministry spokesman Wahabe Belay.
He said he had heard reports of fatalities and was investigating.
The explosion took place in downtown Addis Ababa, said the witness, Girum Abatate. Abatate said he was walking down the road that slopes from the National Palace and runs between the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Hilton Hotel when he heard the explosion.
Abatate said he saw four people dead at the scene.
Both Abatate and Belay said the explosion happened around 7:30 p.m. local time (1630GMT).
