Surrounded by her two children, Hamelmal Kassa fondly recalled her husband of 14 years.

(WMC-TV) – A Memphis cab driver who came to the United States in search of a better life ended up dead one week ago as of Friday.

His grieving family hopes an increased reward helps catch the killer. Zewdneh Assemu was laid to rest Thursday by a family still trying to absorb news of his tragic death.

Surrounded by her two children, Hamelmal Kassa fondly recalled her husband of 14 years.

“I can’t believe this. It’s hard for me,” she said. “He was such a nice person. Everybody knew this.”

Assemu, a civil engineer in his native Ethiopia, supported his family by driving a Metro Cab in Memphis.

It was while on the job last Friday when investigators believe Assemu was killed. His body was later found beaten and stabbed next to his taxi off Highway196 North in Fayette County.

“I don’t know why they took his life. This so innocent person,” said Kassa.

Assemu’s brother from Texas is one of many family members from around the world who came to Memphis for a memorial service, during which many wore specialty T-shirts.

“If the motivation was robbery, why not take the money and let him live for his kids, his family, and his loved ones?” said brother Sileshi Assemu.

Metro Cab and Yellow Cab have each contributed money to a Crime Stoppers reward, which now totals $3,000 dollars for information leading to an arrest.

The TBI is in charge of this investigation and reports no new developments.

Anyone with information on the murder can call either Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH or 1-800-TBI-FIND.
