Ethiopia media calls gay people “satanic”, “disease”

Mohammed Awad

ADDIS ABABA: A top Ethiopian newspaper lashed out at the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community this past week, referring to gay people as “satanic” and as a spreading “disease” in a report that has left the community angered and frustrated yet again.

Yegna Press published an article warning Ethiopians of the “problem” of homosexuality, a “disease imported” from the west, which is spreading in Ethiopia.

“The article uses deliberately provocative and sensationalist language equating pedophilia, rape and male sex work with homosexuality, blaming gays for rape and molestation of teens and spreading of HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia,” wrote Gay Star News in their report on the article.

The paper also announced that a documentary film about how “cured” gays confess to their acts and later ‘healed’ by prayer, will be released in a high profile conference attended by government officials, religious and civil society leaders, in the Addis Ababa, the country’s capital.

The article says: “Although male prostitutes have been working underground for years, seeking wealthy gay men wanting a quick liaison they have now become more open, moving into nightclubs, bars and streets of Addis Ababa seeking clients rather than hiding in the dark.

“Addis Ababa is strangely stormed by young and teenage homosexual male prostitutes,” said the article published last week.

It also went on to declare that a documentary film that allegedly aims to “expose the satanic 666 actions of homosexuals in Ethiopia” is scheduled to be screened and officially released on Monday, in a planned gathering of religious leaders, civil society and government official in Addis Ababa.

It comes as Ethiopia’s nascent LGBT community continues to fear for their safety and future in the country.

Lucy and Tina are lesbians. They are a couple who have been together for five years. But in May, while dancing at a local club in Addis Ababa, they told they were attacked by other women, beaten and forced out of the nightclub. The reason: they are lesbian.

“The women just kept yelling at us and screaming and pushing when we started to hold hands,” Lucy told, her eye still dark from the marks of the assault. “They shoved and punched at us until we were forced to leave.”

Tina also has bruises on her arms. The couple said they were enjoying a night out of dancing at a club they often go to for relaxation. They said they’d never had any problems.

“It is shocking because we don’t show a lot of physical intimacy, but we do try to enjoy our time,” chimed in Tina. “And then all hell broke loose. It is becoming more and more common in Ethiopia to be attacked because people are gay or lesbian. The campaign against the community is growing.”

They both alluded to the recent calls from an Evangelical organization that is pushing for the death penalty against Ethiopia’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

An anti-gay organization that held a recent workshop on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues in Ethiopia is reporting that the death penalty against gay people in Ethiopia may be on the horizon.

The workshop reportedly looked with the social ‘evils’ and ‘disastrous’ effects of homosexuality in Ethiopia, and was led by United for Life Ethiopia, a Western Evangelical Christian organization with local representation.

Government officials, religious leaders, leading heath professionals, charities and members of the public attended the event at the Bethel Teaching Hospital in Addis Ababa, last week.

In the workshop police alleged ‘homosexual family members and neighbors’ have sexually abused 117 boys last year.

I am not 100 percent sure whether same sex sexual affinity is a disease or an acquired habit. For most Ethiopians it is the latter, but pushed by “satan”.The Bible prohibits this practice.I think the Quran does the same.Taking note of the deeply spiritual nature of our people and their devotion to the commands of God their strong rejection of homosexuality is expected. The practice is not only abnormal but also against the commands of the scriptures.
If homosexuality is a congenital disease for which the victims are not responsible let us consider them so and provide them treatment like any other disease.Death penalty is absolutely unwarranted

    Dear Editor,

I cannot conceal my disgust on this article. This satanic disease coming to infect our people in Addis? These against nature, against culture, against religion same sex odds should leave Ethiopia quietly and enjoy their freedom where it is legal! Otherwise 99.999% of Ethiopians will come out in search of these odds like a cat does on mouse. Better to leave now!

Let me add more yes they are satanic, diseased and cursed puppies who must not be privileged as humans so no human right to them. If they want to be healed they can. If not they have to be taken to a quarantine area until they die.

This shows the failure of the government to defend the blessed country and the Ethiopian people from such rude and immoral activity of the western countries style of inhuman and discarded moral value to manipulate the Ethiopia’s long standing cultural and moral values as well as God fearing spirits. Ethiopia was known for its rock-hewn churches and Mosques for century but not for such kind of degraded and shameful activity. The government itself is a communist. I hope God may have his own plan to change such kind of situation. So, let’s pray.

As a religious country we should follow our bible. I do not see anywhere in the bible that legitimize gay relationship. The western societies are ruling the world with their money and power, but that does not mean we have to copy them in what ever they do. We have a right to defend our culture and rich heritage. Now, we are called the cave men and uncivilized due to our view on gay rights but we were advanced in civilization. If most of the proof of our civilization were not destroyed it was impossible to deny it. Whether we are against the current government or not our stand on defending our culture, religion, and heritage should be the same. Long live Ethiopia and her conservative culture!!!

LGBT is NOT satanic, nor is it a disease. It is not a choice either. You honestly think someone would CHOOSE to be hated by their country, family and friends? Its such an ignorant notion. Being LGBT is a human right. And no where in the bible does it say that a man and a man or a woman and a woman cant love each other. Read your bible and maybe you’d realize how ignorant and predgjudice you’re all being.

First of all, homosexuality is not the same as pedophilia and/or prostitution. There are many heteros who are sexually attracted to children or engage in sexual activities for payment. Second, people need to stop trying to mandate what individuals do in the privacy of their bedrooms. What is it to you what someone does with their significant other? If you don’t approve of a homosexual lifestyle, don’t engage in one. End of story! Nobody is forcing you to be gay or lesbian. Lastly, stop trying to proselytize and impose your religious views on others. Not everyone follows the Bible or agrees with your homophobic bias. As far as I know, Ethiopia is not a theocratic country like Saudi Arabia that relies on a sacred text, but rather a democratic nation with a constitution – although the nature of democracy in Ethiopia is very questionable. And yes, I am an Ethiopian who believes in forgiveness, tolerance, and compassion. I also believe in practicing the golden rule – “Treat others the way you want to be treated”.
