Debretsion Gebremichael: Corruption, pornography and sex tourism By Abebe Gellaw

Debretsion Gebremichael, TPLF’s new chairman and deputy administrator of the Tigray region, has been exposed for misusing work related travel opportunities and public funds to pay for prostitutes and escorts in cities across the globe, according to an investigative report by Abebe Gellaw.

A cache of digital evidence including emails also shows that the new TPLF leader also spends hours watching pornographic videos, some of which promote bestiality of an abominable nature.

    Hi guys,

Now Abebe G. has graduated from diploma police to a moral police. Next time what would he add to his bio of ever shrinking “fame” as a blackmailer?

Where Abebe lives, people who see this type of blackmail call it “cheap shot”. If he thinks “cheap shot” helps the opposition discourse, he is wrong.

Who cares what the guy does in his private life? Sleep with girls and women if it is consensual and if he has the time and … to do them, why not? Give me one reason that makes getting laid wrong provided it is consensual and in private? Should we play it voyeur for what the guy does in his bedroom? Where is the limit to privacy measured against morality and yearn for a puritan society? Simply because he is a politician, is the argument his judgement might be clouded by his sexuality? In that case, we need legal proof which is different moral standard.

For me, the so called “investigative report” which is in effect “copy and paste” undermines the credibility of the opposition as an alternative to TPLF/EPRDF and distracts people from focusing on serious political, economic and security issues the country faces. The report has a modicum of truth, but it is still trivial compared to our problems.

I sincerely think a person like Abebe who wields a huge media outlet with a wide public outreach – ESAT – should be held to a higher standard which means to rise beyond trivialities and gossip. To dwell on moral turpitude of an individual is always a slippery slope which might trigger libel lawsuit.

It appears that Abebe has joined the moral panic rocking the country he calls home right now. Even there, the call for a puritan society has gone unheeded. Would somebody tell us if Abebe private life is puritan or morally dirty? As the saying goes “charity begins at home”.

After decades of opposition, it is sad to see the discourse in the opposition camp is still dominated by trivialities.

    Oh, man! Oh, man!

At this moment, I don’t want to be Abebe Gelaw.

Rumer has it that Debretsion G.M. is swearing to kick Abebe’s ass. They say he is consulting lawyers in the U.S. to commence action for defamation per se because Abebe is said to have accused him of a unfounded crime, something adversely reflecting on his fitness to conduct public responsibility and imputed to him serious sexual misconduct.

They say his line of legal action is likely to succeed than not.

Abebe relies on hacked accounts and leaked digital materials for the report. Since the hacker has left what experts call digital footprint which leads to one’s digital activities on the internet or on digital devices, they say he is traced and identified by name and address. The hacker is said to have used Debretsion’s account to serf escort services and pornographic webs and posted e-mail message.

In the first place, the fact that the materials for the report came from a hacker has undermined Abebe’s credibility. More important than the hacking is the name and address of the hacker who corrupted Debretsion’s account preparing for Abebe’s report is identified. It is not revealed though if it indicates to Abebeb himself or somebody else. I think Abebe’s and the hacker’s asses are on the line and to be hit real hard in court.

As the report suggests, not only Debretsion’s account has been hacked, accounts of others who allegedly wrote about his impropriety have also been hacked. Here too, apart from and in addition to the hacking which raised serious credibility issue, people clse to Debretsion are saying name and address of the hacker is available. It is implied that this hacker is different from the one mentioned above but presumed to have worked together.

Abebe also relies on what he called “digital evidence leaked online”. Leaking on line can be done by anyone anonymously or without anonymity and claim it is a “leaked” material. He says the leak has been “verified and authenticated by digital experts” which are believed tobe the hackers themselves. It is a public knowledge that experts in the field can testify that hackers can effortlessly put defamatory material in a face book.

It appears that Debretsion has all the evidence he needs to kick asses.

Abebe’s only defense is if he establishes his report is true. How can he prove his report is “true” if the digital footprint provide names and addresses of those who planted the untrue information which Abebe used for his report?

Evidence in IT is scientific and incontrovertible (as much as a DNA evidence is) which makes it believable. Personally, I would like to see Abebe successfully prove whatever he wrote is true. Which means kick Debretsion’s ass, but I am afraid he might lose terribly and with disgrace.

To show his report is true, Abebe might need by eye witnesses from “exclusive brothels for rich playboys” he said Debretsion visited while on official trips abroad. Likewise, he might need witnesses to show Debretsion “abused his power to force young and vulnerable girls, married women and employees to have sex with him.” If I were him, I will get statement from these women – if they are for real – and dump it in the cyber space so preemptively debunk Debretsion’s legal action. Again, I doubt Abebe has anything to relaease to show what he wrote is true.

The record libel verdict in the United States is $222.7 million. A fraction of that will cripple Abebe Gelaw for life. Where Abebe lives, there are criminal defamation laws too with very limited defense if they are invoked.

Such legal action might cost money – a lot of money – but the rumor suggests Debretsion is on the march. If he does not have enough money, EFFORT is expected to chip in.

There is a president in this matter. Elias Kifle of Ethiopian Review, after years of mudslinging right and left, was humbled and finally desisted from defamatory practices because Al Amoudi took him to court and squeezed him hard enough from which he has not recovered to this day.

Abebe will not desist from mudslinging unless someone shakes him like Elias.

A parallel here is Freud’s “penis envy” theory. Until recently Abebe seemed to suffer from a “Ph.D.” envy which won him the famous name “diploma police”. He was after some Ph.D. holders – legitmate of fake – on a partisan basis. Some holders of the degree he mercilessly attacked were said to be close to TPLF/EPRDF. There were, however, people who appeared on ESAT and addressed as “doctor” without setting foot in class for the degree. For some reason, Abebe grew out of his role as diploma police.

Now Abebe is a moral police. I don’t know how he can grow out of this role too. Maybe get blow job? No, it won’t work. Debretsion should shake him hard in court as Al Amoudi did to Elias.

    Abebe,

Drop trivialities while people are seriously working to save the country and its people.

I’m impressed by the above two comments. I have added the comment below from somewhere else because I thought it will help the discussion on this issue. I regret not to have obtained the consent of the writer of the comment for lack of his-her email address. It appears a reply to another comment.

You asked me to “… tell you . . . a bit about the possibility of rapists within the ruling elite.”

How can I tell you what I don’t know? I’m not Abebe or someone who personifies him. If you know about “rapists within the ruling elite” – like Abebe alleges he does – I’m ready to listen.

I questioned Abebe’s “report” simply because he picked a highly sensational but private issue and made big allegations. I called it sensational because sex is a subject that provokes public interest and excitement. The downside is it comes mostly at the expense of accuracy since it is private. By private I mean something that involves one or two persons.

To know anything private requires revelation by a party or parties involved in it or got the privilege to know it. Sex is a good example of something private that takes place in closed doors. Abebe is not saying his source for the report is a party or parties involved (even in the case of the alleged rape). His source is a “privilege” from the internet which somebody questioned its value as a credible source.

Again, I stand by my view that, sex, if it is consensual and between adults, it should be nobody business. If there is a claim that sex has clouded judgement of a public nature, it should be clearly stated and backed by some kind of proof.

If there is rape as Abebe alleges, it should be investigated and the criminal locked up. Unfortunately, Abebe made allegation of rape without giving a hint for investigation. Even now, he can post details or give interview regarding his alleged rape which can trigger investigation. It appears, however, he threw the allegation in the public space hoping people will be alarmed by it, talk about it for a week or two and forget it. Normally, that’s what will happen.

I guess Abebe looks at his “report” as a contribution to political activism, but this is not politics; it is a crime. Abebe’s yelling on Meles Z. at the G8 meeting in 2012 was purely political. What he said was “dictator, Meles Z. is a dictator, dictator” and “freedom, freedom, freedom”. I have not heard or read about killing someone by yelling at him no matter how loud or annoying the voice might be, but that does not detract the political nature of the yelling.

I have read comments that suggest Abebe killed Meles Z. by yelling at him. Cause of Meles’ death is still secret from the pubic; I’ve to see the death certificate to believe Abebe’s yelling really killed him. If the certificate confirms it, murder charge might be hanging over Abebe’s head.

In the present report, most of Abebe’s allegations were on crime. There were passing references to mismanagement, embezzlement, internet filtering and corruption while the entire “report” dwelt on sex which the guy allegedly solicited and obtained when he was out of the country. If he seeks name and respect as an “investigative journalist” he should write reports on the issues he mentioned in passing. I know he postponed them for “another” report which will never come.

Back to the main issue, if there is a rape victim, Abebe should cooperate by giving details to get the criminal punished and the victim redressed. He cannot simply make big allegation assuming that nobody will ask him as to its truthfulness and call it quits. He should appear on ESAT or any other media outlet and give more details on his allegations. Let alone twelve pages report on sex, half a page mambo jumbo will get you full hour airtime on ESAT. If he does just that, some interested individuals might take it from there and see justice done.

In private, Abebe might say “I have destroyed TPLF’s big shot (as I did to M. Zenawi) – mission accomplished and back to base”. Unless he comes out to back his allegations with more details and proof to substantiate it, his work can fairly be considered shoddy that helped or belittled no one.

If the “report” is Abebe’s notion of political activism, nobody will take his writings seriously in the future.
