Colonel Debela Dinsa dies at 79

Colonel Debela Dinsa, a former regime official, popularly remembered for reading the letter  that informed the Emperor that the Emperor was deposed, has died in Addis Abeba. He was buried at the Trinity Cathedral Church two weeks ago. President Girma Woldegiorgis had reportedly sent funeral flowers and were placed  in the burial ceremony.  Col. Debela was freed from a 20 years imprisonment after the sentences on him and 22 other former regime officials were withdrawn according to the Country’s law by President Girma Woldegiorgis in June, 2011.
Some 73 top officials of the Derg regime were sentenced to death and life imprisonment as they were found directly responsible for the deaths and the torture of scores of people and involvement in the “Red Terror”.
Col. Debela was the Chairman of the Addis Ababa General Council Revolutionary Campaign Coordinating Committee and Administrator of the former Shoa Province. It was reported that in 1990, without the knowledge of Colonel Debela, his resignation was announced on the National Radio. It was later known that the then President Mengistu Hailemariam had enforced Debela’s resignation. Col. Debela remembered for his involvement to stop “Red Terror”.  He was Member of Office of the Police Force and Vice President at that time.
Debela is survived by his children.

“… after the sentences on him and 22 other former regime officials were withdrawn according to the Country’s law by President Girma Woldegiorgis in June, 2011”

“… his resignation was announced on the National Radio”

“… He was Member of Office of the Police Force”

All inaccurate information – charges never been withdrawn; he was anounced retired not resignation and he had been from police force – clumsy writer

Your article says he was inv0lved to stop the Red Terror. Was not he part and parcel of it. How many did he abuse and killed? There are individuals in the diaspora who sufferred because of his action. May be the person who posted this article should listen to the individual who witnessed the individuals crime during the Mengistu era.

The sentence that reads as “Col. Debela remembered for his involvement to stop “Red Terror” is not only clumsy but it is also a tautology. It is also in contradiction with the penultimate sentence, which reads as “He was Member of Office of the Police Force and Vice President at that time”. // Why was he, then sentenced to life in prison if he was that innocent and not bloodstained?

The scourge of the the late 1970’s is not going to leave us alone. TPLF apologists bismirck any name associated with Mengistu’s government no matter what the did or did not do. In the same, EPRP aplogists do not see any positive thing that came of the fall of the feudal system. In a turn of events, revisionists have begun churning the dead body of student activists (our heroes of the student movements) in an effort to defend their dead cause. These are the realities today. We had known for quite some time that reminants of EPRP and TPLF have been coordinating their activities in a way that the general public could not anticipate.

Twenty years imprisonment for all the pain caused by the Derg regime is lite. Debela Dinsa was responsible for the killing of so many innocent people because like all the other Derg members he was an ignorant soldier. The pain caused by the Derg’s atrocities to so many ethiopians will go down in history as a barbaric regime. Debela Dinsa does not deserve any recognition except that he to was barbaric and ignorant. Why even inform the public of his demise. Who cares!

I agree with Aster and I have known him personally. His son was my class mate… Simple man and HE IS THE MAN WHO STOPPED RED TERROR … It is clear He was threat for the government as he was liked and he is OROMO. It is sad when you have brain and good leader you get arrested or killed! That is why I tell all Ethiopians to unit and have a good leader and protect your leaders! Die for good leaders!
