Note: The government of Meles Zenawi is telling us Ethiopia’s economy is in double digit growth. It is true that his corrupt cabinet members are multi-millionaires at the expense of the poor. 18 years in power, the dictator has put the entire nation more and more dependent on foreign food aid. The country has never seen such starvation and misery even during the military dictatorship, not to mention a total blackout of electricity and water.
July 21 2009, Addis Ababa – More than six million Ethiopians could soon need food aid due to poor rains in some parts of the country over the last three years, the UN humanitarian affairs office said on Monday.
Currently 4,9 million Ethiopians receive food aid, but the figure could rise to 6,2 million, the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a statement.
A current relief food shortfall of 176 000 metric tonnes is also expected to rise to 390 000 tonnes, it added.
“Because of the existing shortfall, only three of the six planned rounds of food allocations have been distributed to date,” it said.
